20th Century Fox is developing a X-Men Origins: Wolverine spin-off featuring Deadpool, the wise-cracking mercenary played in the film by Ryan Reynolds, says The Hollywood Reporter.

Reynolds is attached to reprise the character for what for now is simply being called Deadpool. Lauren Shuler Donner and Marvel Studios would act as producers.

The project is currently out to writers.

The trade adds that the studio considered a Deadpool spin-off early in "Wolverine's" development process, which is why it cast Reynolds.

UPDATE: A source close to Fox tells us that the Deadpool and second "Wolverine" movies are coming from the two Easter Eggs at the end of X-Men Origins: Wolverine:

"We are developing a spinoff with Deadpool, as well. It is one of the two different "Easter egg" scenes after the credits of WOLVERINE and hints at two different movies that are coming FROM THEM. One is the Japan backstory which was announced earlier, the other is about Deadpool. The film, which would be produced by Lauren Shuler Donner and Marvel, has Ryan Reynolds attached and would be a complete exploration of this unique character - his origins, his emergence as the Merc with with the Mouth, etc. We are looking for writers as well."

*shrugs* They managed to keep Hugo Weaving in a mask for all of V for Vendetta, but then again, Hugo Weaving isn't ridiculously good looking.

I don't really see why anyone is worried about what happened in the Wolverine movie. I mean, if you watch the first X-Men movie Sabertooth and Wolverine don't even know each other and now in this latest movie they are brothers. Something tells me they don't care about continuity.

With The Proposal opening in theaters next Friday, Ryan Reynolds has been doing more interviews and MTV talked to him more about starring in the "Wolverine" spin-off Deadpool.

That interview with Ryan makes me feel a little better about where the film's going. Hopefully it'll be kick-ass.

One would expect that Donner and 20th Century Fox would eventually get around to introducing Cable--the aged son of Jean Grey and Scott Summers in an alternate timeline--in a future "X-Men" installment, but it's even more promising to learn that Liefeld is involved in the development, something that could help to make it happen even sooner.

Was Liefeld responsible for first two DP mini series (The Circle Chase and whatever the 2nd one is called)? If so, good. If he alread bailed before then, fuck him. Those represent what good Deadpool is to me. Funny, a nice combo of good and and bad personality traits, and lots and lots of cold-blooded killing. When he got his own ongoing book DP became supremely faggotized. He wanted to be a super hero, stopped killing, got waaay too goofy, etc. Marvel always ruins their popular bad guys when they turn 'em good and give 'em their own book (another example: Venom).

He was already onto Image when Circle Chase started. That's my favorite too! Joe Mad and Fabian Niecza (sp?).

The X-Men franchise and its spin-offs have been so inconsistent from film to film (and Spiderman too) that it's really hard to know. I didn't like Wolverine but it was better than X-3 and got a lot of the feel right. If they had a better ending the entire movie would have been OK. If they're thinking about doing some innovative stuff with Deadpool (movie-wise) to accommodate the different feel of the Deadpool comics I'm have a lot more hope. The Dark Knight really did the comic movie industry a favor by showing dark can sell.

He's probably REALLY EXCITED about a movie being made of the character (and why wouldn't he be?), but he doesn't make a dime on the movie unless somebody decides to throw him a bone.

I personally can't stand Liefeld's "art", but I do sense that he really is a comic fan and would be excited for nothing more than one of his characters making it to the big screen.

I was trying to stir the pot more than anything else – after all, Lang certainly has the look and temperament for Cable, and after Avatar, Steven Spielberg’s upcoming time-travel TV show Terra Nova, Lang’s relationship with Fox (which owns the X-Men franchise) looks to be pretty strong. Who better to play Cable then?


To my surprise, Lang not only knew who Cable was – he’s already formed opinion about playing him. Comic book fans hold on to your hats:

“One of boys mentioned to me – he says, ‘Hey pops, they’re talking about you for Cable,’ and I said ‘Who would that be?’ and so he Googled him for me and I saw him and I thought ‘Oh wow, he’s cool.’

When asked directly if he’d be interested in the role:

“Yes, I’m there. [Laughter] Sure, why not. I’d be happy to. You read it all, everything that comes across. And if it makes sense, if it’s a cool character, if it’s a theme you want to explore…sure.”

Now this is in no way to be taken as any kind of sign or confirmation. Lang has not been approached to play Cable, nor are there any confirmed plans to have the mutant mercenary grace the screen at this point. Still, it’s nice to know that the man fans are nominating is at least interested in the character, no?

There's a leaked first draft script for this on the internet, I grabbed it the other night. It actually seems pretty good, I'll grab it for you guys when I can get back to my actual computer. It seems like an adaptation of Deadpool and Death Annual in that it focuses on Ajax as the villain. It also has Colossus.

Take Rodriguez off the list of Directors. Due to Spy Kids 4 and scheduling conflicts with Ryan ... they had to find a new director.

The one leading the pack is ... Adam Berg. Who?

However, Berg has directed a short film called Carousel (which you can view below) that won the Cannes Lions International Advertising prize, the most prestigious award in the advertising industry.
The director is said to be greatly admired by Reynolds and others involved with Deadpool, so needless to say he has a solid shot at landing the prjoect. Want to see why he wouldn’t be a bad choice? So Berg may not have directed a feature-length film before, but remember the same situation occurred with District 9 director Neill Blomkamp. Before D9 hit theaters people were skeptical about Blomkamp, but then District 9 proved just how talented he really was.
Deadpool is shaping up to be a pretty major project and at this point it does seem a bit strange they would go from an established director like Rodriguez to an unknown, relatively inexperienced, one like Berg. However I’m willing to give him the benefit of the doubt on the strength of his short film alone.
