To add to this: my parents are really pushing for me to own a home. I honestly don't want to and I do not mind renting because the money I save from a mortgage I can put towards investments. D.C. homes are much cheaper and larger than NYC homes.

I don't want to commute to work. I lived in Jersey City and had tons of money left over. Now that I live in Brooklyn I pay more for everything but I'm not craddling poverty lines. I just don't spendy as freely as I used to.
You really pay to just say you live in New York City. I don't mind it, and others don't either, but we get paid more to compensate for the higher cost of living.
