It wouldn't surprise me to see a handheld from MS, but it's probably not going to look anything like that.Quote:
This is just a mock-up we found on the Internet.

More than likely the Zune HD will be their game player and will play XBLA games.
http://www.engadget.com/2009/04/10/is-this-the-zune-hd/
Being able to play XBLA games on a portable device or 360 sounds good to me.
I really doubt itll play current XBLA games as they are.
If it exists, i dont doubt it will play its own set of XBLA, and in the perfect world, the ability to buy one to play on both.
If MS puts out a Zune that plays all XBLA games I will finally abandon my Creative Zen.
But I seriously doubt they can put enough power in a Zune to play that stuff and still be economical. If it only plays it's own special section of 'tard games from XBLA, no sale.
Would that actually be a button in the middle of the Dpad or just some decoration? Even in mock up form it's goofy.
Its not an official mock up. That's why its ugly and unfunctional.
Slightly better link from Engadget.
If this is a Live convergence device, it'll be really cool. MP3 player tied into your Live account so you can see your friends list, play XBLA games, queue stuff to download to your 360, watch shows and movies you bought, would probably make me ditch my Creative Zen too.
Why would Yoshi care about a portable from MS when all portables are basically inferior ways of enjoying better products?
He probably doesn't, but one thing that MS would do to break into the space is pony up for some badass games.
MS actually spoke of a convergence device like this, specifically being able to play XBLA games on the go, during one of the smaller meetings after their conference at E3 '06. Seemed like a pipe dream at the time with all the ways of interacting with your 360, like browsing marketplace content, queuing up downloads, instant messaging friends currently on their box, etc. Wouldn't be surprised if they're finally moving towards it.
Live Anywhere lives again?
I still won't get it so I don't care.
Portables aren't by definition useless, but the three (giving the iPhone too much credit here) we have now are all miserable designs. My biggest issue with portables is that they are designed for "portable" games. How have we had dual analog sticks on consoles for over a decade and still can't get them on a portable, for instance? A portable that allows the transfer of console games, a la the PSP, but with correct console controls would be attractive for those times when I have no other option but to play a portable, e.g. on an airplane.
What's wrong with "portable" games on a "portable"?
Man! To hell with saving whenever you want and being able to pick up a game at pretty much any point! Also a lack of drawn out retarded storylines! Fucking Clown Shoes.
I thought this was clear by now, but apparently not. When I say "portable" games, I mean specific genres and compromises that are tailor made for portable systems, e.g. games that are designed to be digestible in 5 minute spurts. As a general rule, I can't stand the end product when it is designed to be played in that manner. I want console-style games that happen to be on portable hardware. That is the differentiation I am trying to make when I say "portable" games. In other words, every game that runs on a PSP or DS is not a "portable" game. The two PSP GTAs are good examples of the contrary, although they are neutered by the lack of a second analog stick, which gets back to my reason for being interested in a potential MS system.
That is a strange thing to want.
It's a major problem on systems which are designed to be digestible in five minute spurts. Also, I would like for my car to be outfitted for space travel.
I don't think it's too much to ask that the systems either have good d-pads or dual analogs. The PSP and DS both fail in both categories.
Yoshi wants a Sega Nomad.
I personally think portable gaming is a different format with different needs in the same way arcade gaming and computer gaming are.
Yoshi doesn't want a Nomad since it doesn't have dual analog.
Is that one dude still making custom portables? Go forth.
You can't take that shit on an airplane in any reasonable manner though. I don't want a second laptop.
Which looks just slightly less clunky than the image originally posted in this thread...
YOU GUYS ARE NEVER HAPPY
It's not that hard. Here is what I want:
- ~4" diagonal, 16:9 screen
- Saturn or Neo Geo d-pad
- dual 360 analog sticks
- Six face buttons and at least two shoulder triggers
- ~16GB of internal storage and expandable via flash cards of some sort
- Wireless-G or better connectivity
- Capable of playing reasonable console DLC, i.e. not expecting it to play PS3 Burnout.
- A Sega logo. :p
Low Blow. Low fucking Blow.
You'll never get a quality d-pad. You'll get another abortive analog stick.
If he gets twin analogs, he's just gonna want a mouse and keyboard setup.
And a coolata
Mocha. With soy.
One neat thing about games designed to be digestible in 5-minute spurts is that you are allowed to play them longer than 5 minutes if it pleases you to do so. Wipeout Pure, Picross, and Pokemon Pinball rarely object to being played twelve or even nineteen minutes in excess of 5 minutes I find. It doesn't bother them or nothin'.
Besides, if you can't have fun with a game within five minutes, then that game is probably not very good.
Obviously there are genres that happen to fit well in that space, and you mentioned three of them. However, portable gaming should not be imbalanced toward those genres any more than consoles are.
Wouldn't it suck if it went the other way, and developers started making console games digestible in five minute spurts? Oh, wait...
Exactly. The plague spreads, which is why it needs to be eradicated.

Hero is not wrong, I don't think. Of course, then again he gets in gunfights over gasoline EVERY DAY on the way home, and who the fuck wants to unwind with more of the same, really?
Fallout 3 was ok.
Agree -- that's why I like playing SF4 and nothing else lately.
I thought the NGPC stick was well done and confortable. My problem with portables is that they cramp the f^&* out of my hand. All of them. The DS is the worst. Here's an idea -- design a portable for the audience that is actually buying most of your products i.e. adults. Or actually hire an ergonomics company and design it for everyone. It can be done.
Sony's decision to create a dpad lacking a middle was the stupidest design choice ever. Well maybe not, the N64 controller is pitiful.
...really? It's not like there is no middle AT ALL to the Sony pads, it's a whole piece of plastic, you just can't see part of it. The d-pad is not four seperate buttons.
If the complaint is 'no diagonals', I agree. I wish there were.
The only problem I have with it is that it seems they have no intention to integrate the existing Zune platform with the 360 either via the Zune itself or streaming from a PC....and it will probably be stupid expensive and have a small amount of storage.
Otherwise it's a slick ass media player.
What's so fail about it? They specifically say the XBL details will be forthcoming.
Dear everyone,
Stop calling everything "HD." You tried that shit with "X" and "Extreme" in the 90s, and look where that got you.
Smooches,
Travis
PS: This is in the wrong thread, Yoshi. This has nothing to do with the rumored xYz thing.
I don't want a media player. I wanted a 21st century portable game player, and they blew that completely by not putting any controls on the damn thing. If I wanted an iPhone, I'd buy one.
Since the article mentions the ability to output, it may really be HD, at least 720p.
The screen on it will not be HD. And also the name being slapped of fucking everything is just overdone right now. They use it for all kinds of shit. For example, this thing claims its name because it supports "HD Radio," which by the way is not High Def and does not, in fact, stand for anything.
They've just destroyed its meaning. Find a new thing.
"The screen will not be HD"
Proof?
It's {this big}.
What Yeller said.
Hd radio. You're serious. Radio in hd. I don't even want to know how they expect that to work. Hd isn't a market branding phrase, it's a specific term with specific meaning.
JamesHD
The SONY Vaio P screen uses 200+ dpi on an 8.9" screen at a res of 1680x768. The Zune HD screen would have to be 7" diagonal for this (@ 208dpi).
To get that res on a 3.8" size they would need 380 dpi. Very tough, though not out of the realm of possibility.
These are LCD specs so I'm not sure how this would translate to OLED.
As long as it shows "green" when something should be green, and you can see the buttons, who gives a shit?
Are you going to watch David Lynch movies on it or something?

I really just can't understand how any company at this point wants to compete against Nintendo in the portable market.
I like my Zune so I think this is cool ;p
Uh, PSP has way more marketshare than either of those ever had.
Frankly, I don't think anyone can beat Nintendo in the portable market except Nintendo (think N64/PS1 all over again). Simply because Nintendo continues to cater to such a wide demographic at a great price point. Let's face it, the portable market may never be what "we" want it to be because we're the minority.
That is pretty accurate. I mean, look at the ads. I can't count how many middle-aged female celebs have done DS commercials.
The PSP has really done the best. They have a huge marketshare compared to any other 2nd place handheld, even software-wise (which is admittedly abysmal in the West). If Sony can get a system that is difficult to hack (which may never happen--people seem to want to hack them more than any other size device), then they really could do some damage.
i don't think anyone wants a psp that can't be hacked. those umd's don't sell.
Maybe I shouldn't be including it, but I see more people playing games on their iPhones/iPod Touches than anything else lately. I'd think either a) Apple is Nintendo's biggest challenger for the portable gaming market right now or b) If Sony does go all digital download on the PSP then, with the right set up, software price and lineup they could really cause massive damage to Nintendo/Apple's cut of the market.
On topic, I'm assuming Zune HD is the rumored xYz and, unless the price is right and it has some XBLA-type games that look awesome, I would pass. I hope there is a seperate Microsoft xYz device coming priced at about $150.00 and, while I'm wishing, comes with a free pony.
Lynx and Gamegear were only portable if you had a special purse for them. Rebuttal still works.
And the PSP had no workable control mechanism for years with a horrid d-pad and a single, bad analog. The Lynx was the best portable hardware for a long time, with the exception of the battery issue.
And the point is that it wouldn't be rocket science to get this shit right and finally give Nintendo a real competitor.
Lynx was amazing and so ahead of its time.
Exactly. It was the portable version of the DC. It was too early.
Electrocop blew my mind the first time I played it. Then STUN Runner came along and you realized that this system was more powerful than the home consoles (at the time).
The only game I play on portables is Picross DS. I may not buy another portable game until I finish all the puzzles that come with it. I used to really love the things, but now...I dunno. Unless I am away from games for a while, I don't really want to deal with them
lol portables
The only DS game i really give any time is Meteos, and only if I'm in the mood.
I wish we only had portable gaming devices.
Which is why you bought a PS3 of course.
Since this thread seems to be about wish fulfillment, I'd rather we only had portables so all the focus went there.
Since that's not the world we live in...
OG gameboy is only slightly larger than a DS lite.
It is super thick tho that's what she said
slightly can be a relative term.
