I already knew i was going to get this game but god damn that shit is hotness.
I would tell you if this game sucked.
This game does not suck.
But frog liked other Clover / Platinum shit. Is this at least 100x better than that?
Let's break it down game by game and try to fish out these mystical terrible games from Clover/Platinum.
Viewtiful Joe
Viewtiful Joe 2
Okami
God Hand
Madworld
Viewtiful Joe SSB knockoff/portables.
Aside from those pesky personal tastes, the only games among them that are truly bad are the VJ spinoffs. The first two games were competent at least, and if you liked the genre provided a pretty great experience. God Hand was technically inferior but has a ton of combat depth and has great atmosphere/humor. I'm pretty sure people mostly loved Okami? What happened? Time ravaged your opinion of this one as well? And as for Madworld, it's a unique game that uses stylization to mask its technical shortcomings, and manages to create another worthwhile action game that is worth more than the 30 dollars it asks of you.
Here's my preview. I only got to play the first stage and watch the last stage of the first chapter (the devs know how to show off, of course, but it was really incredible watching). There's still a lot we don't know about the game, but I think it's safe to say that in terms of general combat this pretty much shits all over similar action games.
I thought that a few things were tacky, like the little claws that reach out from the edges of the screen when you're low on health, but it's really inconsequential.
I didn't get to try out the rocket launchers or anything like that, but after I took down the first boss I got to use his very large axe, which was fun to discover.
lol
VJ lasts far too long and is far too repetitive. Okami, same thing. So what if the 'art style' is 'good'. And by good I mean 'doesn't try to look realistic'.
Okami was great but too long. Madworld got repetitive. And God Hand was just weird.
But there's plenty of elements that range from good to awesome in every one of those games that it's idiotic to completely write them off as a developer.
I agree with most of what TrialSword said. Most of the people bashing Clover/Platinum in their entirety are TNL's usual "hate almost everything" crowd anyway. Plus, their games vary wildly in terms of controls, length, and difficulty. A lot of people love God Hand and hate MadWorld or vice versa. I imagine the same will happen with Bayonetta which looks quite a bit different for a game in the same genre.
