I've seen that quote a couple of places and really want to punch the writer in the head. People who speak like that deserve it. I bet this guy leverages his synergies all day long.Quote:
Bayonetta is an extremely important new IP for SEGA and adds a new level of depth to our growing portfolio," said Sega West president and COO Mike Hayes in a statement. As a result of market analysis, we have taken a Publishing decision that January 2010 is the optimum release time in the Western Markets to maximize this exciting new title's potential.
James
He's an executive. They all speak like that.
I think that's a good decision. Maybe companies are realizing that releasing everything in fall isn't always a good idea. Still, I can't help but wonder if January 2010 is a little too close to God of War 3's March 2010 release date.
I'm excited about this game. Right now I have no time to play it, so the push back kinda gives me time to save up and finish some other stuff.
I could care less about God of War 3, I don't own a PS3. So it dropping around the same time won't have an effect on me and probably alot of other 360 only owners. It might affect its ps3 sales, but YAY for multi console releases.
I just realized that Dante's Inferno is also set for a Q1 2010 release. Maybe delaying Bayonetta isn't such a good plan - that's three very similar games in a short timeframe.
Dante's inferno and God of War are similar, but other than being third person action games they have nothing to do with this one.
Dante's Inferno has EA's marketing muscle behind it, and God of War is a well established IP. The games are similar enough that Sega is continuing their traditional retardation by even attempting to go toe-to-toe with those games. Right or wrong, having a female lead doesn't bode well against that competition either.
Female leads are bad for sales?
Resident Evil has a few games with Female leads.
Metroid is pretty major too I guess, but she wears a suit.
It's not all Tomb Raider.
Metroid does a damn good job hiding it. And Resident Evil is highly, highly male dominated.
Yoshi only thinks in terms of market success.
It's disgusting.
Yeah, female lead will hurt sales. I don't know what Sega is expecting in sales, but the game is so good I'm sure word of mouth will help it do decently. Not expecting it to crack a million without a big sales push.
It's January, it's got a few months ahead of GoW3, and in Japan, neither of those games are relevant anyway. Honestly, I think they thought this through pretty well. January is a month where people have new systems, they beat their Christmas games, and not a lot is out.
I fully expect this to outsell DI, at least internationally.
The Japan release is still set for October. I think you're wrong about this outselling Dante's Inferno, by the way. Even taking Japan into account, I think Dante's Inferno will cream Bayonetta. So will God of War 3, if it follows the pattern of the previous installments.
Yes, I suppose it's true that EA hasn't exactly had the greatest success with its new IPs recently. Dead Space sold far less than it really deserved, though 1.4 million is nothing to sneeze at. I still think Dante's Inferno will outsell Bayonetta. Sega games sell horribly, and Platinum games doubly so. Plus I don't think Japan matters all that much this generation. The sales charts in Japan seem to be absolutely dominated by DS games and JRPGs. I can't remember the last time I saw a hardcore action game in them.
The best they can hope for is it turns into another Valkyria Chronicles where the sheer word of mouth bumps sales a lot. And then they release a shitty sequel on the PSp.
I just noticed DI is coming out in January too. I thought it was going to be much, much later than that. That could be a bit of a problem. But I don't honestly see DI being that big unless the reviews are amazing. It's a very derivative game that isn't going to stand out on personality the way Bayonetta is. Both games were at E3 and I just didn't feel a lot of buzz going on for DI, whereas Bayonetta was getting lots of best of show awards and a lot of positive attention. It just feels to me like there's more excitement there.
Frankly, I think Bayonetta's going to be the better game, too.
Dead Space is the definition of derivative, and it sold at least 3x what Bayonetta will.
Dead Space was actually pretty forward thinking as far as the survival horror genre goes, and even the sci-fi setting is way underutilized within that genre. Dante's Inferno looks like a good game, but it really feels like a GoW clone. Of course Bayonetta is very Devil May Cry, but at least that can frame itself as a sort of spiritual successor. It's better than the last DMC and there's not going to be a new DMC anytime soon.
Dead Space was the real Resident Evil 5.
Also bring all three (Bayonetta, DI, GoW3) in rapid succession. I don't care. They're all going to be pretty awesome.
I don't doubt that, but luckily no one will be doing that in January.
Spiritual sequels never do as well as the original game (unless they're named Metal Slug), but they usually do better than other new IPs.
Wait... what's the spiritual successor relationship with Metal Slug?
Metal Slug was the successor to Gun Force II after the team left Irem. They look and play almost identically, except GF2 has more of a futuristic theme and less cartoony characters. Right down to the hostage rescuing, riding in vehicles, etc.
I'll be damned. I don't recall ever having heard that before.
ugh, how the christ do you force a 60fps upload on youtube like that? I've only done it accidentally.
Anyway,Don't forget Bioshock!Quote:
(unless they're named Metal Slug)
Ah, good point, good point.
I think Halo should count too. Even though the Marathon games were pretty sweet in their own right.
Wasteland -> Fallout
I'm not counting shit by completely different people. I mean attempts by a game's creator to recreate their past success.
But yeah, I guess you have to have achieved a certain level of success to begin with for that to be difficult.Eh, Halo was originally an RTS. It was never really meant as a Marathon successor, it just sort of came out that way. Kinda.
Beyond Good and Evil actually did sell fairly well. The problem was, it sold well after it had dropped to $20...
Which was like 2 weeks after it came out. God Ubi is stupid. No one who fucks up these releases will ever admit it. Warner still insists Iron Giant was "too smart" for audiences.
Has anyone ever met someone who really like DMC but thought God of War was better? I sure havent, all the big DMC fans I know think god of war is trash. I dont know how much overlap there really is here.
That would be me.
DMC isn't that amazing in the first place.
I never liked DMC very much, but I think Bayonetta builds on it in the right ways and it's a solid improvement from what I've seen.
Is not as good in any way, and I loooooooooooove berserk.
I'm not arguing about what's better, but it's in the same genre and it's good enough to qualify as having done it "right."
It was ambitious, but I don't know it really isn't playable anymore so I dont know how right it got it.
I didn't mean to imply the DMC series is bad, it's not bad at all, but it can be surpassed easily. I haven't actually tried GoW but they seem like solid games.
Berserk was a solid 3d beat em up.
I'd like to think DMC was something more than that, given how many copycats it spawned afterwards.
It did a lot of things right when not many games were doing it right, it's the base formula, it's usefulness cannot be questions, but you can substitute and improve as long as you don't fuck the formula over too much.
Coming from someone who has beaten all three god of wars they are perfectly servicable mindless hack and slashes with high production values. It's painfully obvious that sony wanted it to be a mainsteam title so the game is stupid easy. The combo system just doesnt stand up to DMC or ninja gaiden. GoW also takes itself waaaay to seriously for the plot being as stupid as it is.
That's pretty spot on. DMC and NG always offered just a bit more depth and were esoteric enough to engage you for multiple playthroughs.
Finishing GoW, I was like "that was nice", but didn't feel much sense of accomplishment.
Regarding Bayonetta, I'm still not digging her design too much. Can't quite put my finger on it, and I've been going over the concept art quite a bit (there's an art contest with Sega at Wizard(?)...maybe it's that she's pretty far divorced from anything I'd relate to as human...might as well be an android, kick-shooting with her crazy long legs and making vacuous, vaguely sexual quips.
The NG/DMC/GoW debate doesn't even matter. Godhand is lightyears beyond these games.
This game looks pretty fun but the character design looks painfully fruity. I mean Dante was fruity enough as it is, but bitchslapping people with your hair just plain crosses the line. Still, it looks rad enough for me to ignore the cheesy character designs.
It's more cheesecake skanky than fruity. She's basically a magic stripper of some sort. Her clothes come off during special moves. It's stupid, but it's stupid in a very DMC adolescent boy kind of way.
I agree, but I didn't really like Dante either. The entire game I as just wishing he'd shut the hell up. It just doesn't appeal to me. I can see why people would like it though. I'd even prefer Ryu in Ninja Gaiden even though he was stoic the entire game and pretty much had no personality. At least he wasn't annoying.
After rewatching the video in the OP, damn this game looks rad as hell.
This, although I'd extend that notion even further, saying she's essentially a male design given a female appearance and animations. Might be why she come off a bit drag-queen'ish...sort-of like Ivy in Soul Calibur 4 -so over-sexualized that she seems more like a guy trying really hard to be woman gendered than an actual female.
I think 'magic stripper' is a pretty good evaluation, but also why she might not appeal to some...who really looks up to strippers?
This is all aside from the game mechanics and moveset, which looks pretty rad so far. Fight physics look a little floaty, but I think they'll have it down by release.
That would be looking up at strippers, but yes, wordplay, well done : p
Gimme those ribs!
I can see that arguement being made but the point of that debate is that GoW should not even be included. There is no incentive nor as many avenues to attain and increase skill in that game which clearly separates it from the other three. It's the layman's action game. The staying power does not reside in the gameplay, rather in a latent desire to revisit the production values sometime down the line. It's the Hollywood blockbuster summer movie of action games.
Bayonetta looks cheesy but it will come down to the gameplay.
thanks for reminding me that the second Berserk game never came to the US. I still want to play that. Still looking forward to this game too.
Swear to god, this is the first thing I thought of-
http://www.the-nextlevel.com/board/a...1&d=1248573579
Berzerk was more popular, but Frenzy was loads more fun.
James
I probably would have enjoyed it a bit more since I was at that part in the manga where the 2nd game was based on.
I wish we could get another god hand too, but I'm guessing capcom will sit on that one. It would be really nice if someone took the groundwork from god hand and made a semi serious fist of the north star game like that.
I never really cared too much for Devil May Cry. The first one was fun, but the 2nd was just all around terrible. So I gave up on the series after that. I thought God of War was fun, but never really got all into it either. So I never played the sequels. I'm kind of in the mood for a good over the top beat em up. I thought prototype would maybe fill the gap, but it got a bit boring in spots, but I still had a lil fun with it. I'm hoping bayonetta will give me some over the top mindless fun like I had with god hand.
I still think the second berserk game is really fucking awesome just because it's so over the top, and well it's fucking BERSERK so im biased. I never beat it though so I guess that does say something. I also never got to play god hand do you think EB or bestbuy would still have it?
Announced today: Very easy automatic mode.
Players mash one button, the game automatically handles anything complex :wtf:
Must be getting a Wii port down the line....
Jesus Christ. Clover/Platinum fucking sucks.
Anything handled by Sega must be shat upon by Sega somehow.
It can be turned off though right?
For those of you with your panties in a bunch, please note that Automatic mode is only available on the two easiest difficulty levels. Anyone playing through a game like this on Easy or Very Easy should be beaten with a sack of potatoes.
Granted, Sega will Sega this game up, somehow. They have a magical ability to ruin games without even touching them.
Neither of which were made by Platinum.
And you could say that's the same thing, but then Artoon is heyday Sega. The math doesn't always work out when you do that.
They're a new company formed from the dissolution of Clover by key members of its staff. This is not the same thing. Game Republic is not Capcom/Flagship either.
I'm still leery as hell, unless the non-key members of Clover were the ones fucking everything up.
In a perfect world we'd like to think those are the ones that got thrown out :(
Yes, but so does replacing Capcom's logo with Sega's...
Bayonetta: 10/10/10/10 from Famitsu.
edit: Awww.
double edit: Yeeeaaah!
Fake score made up on 2ch. Happens all the time with Fami announcements.
More importantly, Nintendogs.
If you have a chan account on XBL, the demo recently went from a gold exclusive to available to silver accounts. I've had the demo a few days, and essentially, if you liked Devil May Cry at all, enjoy over the top combo chaining and flashy moves, you will love this game. I've probably played it about 15 times already, and every time I've found a new attack, skill, or combo. There is just SO MUCH SHIT you can do, and they only give you 2 weapons to work with even.
I want a new 3D Shinobi, Sega.
I want you to take back the last 3D Shinobi, Sega.
Oh, you.
Turns out the score was true after all. 40/40 for the 360 version, 38/40 for PS3.
If Famitsu scores meant anything to me, I'd be impressed. This should be pretty sharp, though.
Yeah, considering the massive technical faults of the PS3 version, there's no way in hell it should be even close to the 360 version.
I am pretty intrigued by this game though, the demo is sweet, may pick it up next week.
I considered making a Japanese XBL account just so I could try both demos. Of course then I decided that I didn't really give a shit. I'll play the PS3 demo and if I decide I like it I'll just get the 360 version.
Don't play the PSN demo, it's much better on 360.
