I grabbed the demo off of my JP X360 account. This game really is like DMC, only sluttier, more ridiculous, and with even more shit going on. The game seems solid enough; I'll give it a go, it's more of a question of when (day 1 or wait a while and scoop at a cheaper price point).
I actually had trouble keeping track of the action when I first stated playing it, but it just seems like more of a learning curve (and the natural effect of a ton of shit happening at once). That and the demo struck me as being easy for a game in the mold of DMC and Ninja Gaiden, but maybe that's just the demo.
Tried both PS3 and 360 demos. I really want to like the game, but playing it makes my head hurt. I'm trying to follow along, and there is so much going on in the game, that I start to feel dizzy after a short while.
This has never happened to me before and I really don't like the feeling.
Funny, I didn't think there was enough going on in the demo. I found it far too easy to control and herd the enemies to keep them from hitting me pretty much at all.
I was counting on this game to be at least as tough as DMC1. If I have to beat the game on Normal to unlock what I'm expecting... aughQuote:
Apparently, the difficulty modes higher than Normal are supposed to offer some bone-crushing, teeth-gritting challenge to the game.
Or something. Kamiya just said it would be "Crazy hard". I'm willing to believe him on that.
Play-Asia has the Asian version of this for $49.90 plus the normal ~$4 shipping, so those of us with J360s or who want it on PS3 can have it way earlier and cheaper.
Guys really, this is one of those games where you should really really avoid the PS3 version.
I'm still trying to decide if I'm going to grab this on Thursday or not. I'm thinking I might.
Is it really that bad? I didn't notice much of a difference in the side-by-side comparison at GameTrailers aside from a slightly more pronounced contrast of color.
In any case, this is going to be a rare day 1, $60 purchase for me.
What's the problem with the ps3 one?
Yeah, I haven't purchased a game day 1 for full retail price in a while. Guess the common sense must be thinning out.
It's a pretty noticeable difference if you play the 360 one (well, the demo) long enough. I could even swear that battles feel blurry too, which means its not just limited to the cutscenes.
Guess I'll wait.
Myeah. Apparently, even the in-game text is in English according to here. Still gonna wait, though.
The whole game is completely in english if your system is set to it, both the PS3 and 360 versions. So the long delay for the US release really makes no sense whatsoever.
That said, this game really is quite awesome so far. It's out of control goofy, with a complete nonsense story. It's like Devil May Cry taken to a whole new level. I definitely recommend it.
The Japanese version is region locked. Asian version has not been confirmed, but usually those two match.
Yeah, I knew that forwards and backwards, but when I heard region free, I jumped, ready to just buy the 360 version.
It's not the worst difference in the world if you play it on PS3, but [to me] there's a noticeable gap in the framerate during fights and some blurryness in cutscenes.
Maybe those were just the demos acting up and the retail versions for both are very similar. Either way, I want it, I want it, I want it.
This game is so gaudy it makes Devil May Cry look restrained. I love it. I'm not far in, but I'm already pretty sure this game is better than DMC4.
I HIGHLY recommend everyone with a J360 get it asap.
As for the PS3 differences, nope, it's not just the demos, the game runs worse on the PS3... you really should avoid it at all costs. The biggest problem is the framerate during fights gap. You really need this game to move as smoothly as possible.
Why don't you have a J360 yet Rocca? You should have it for the shooters in the first place.
Honestly, I know what you mean about Bayo vs. DMC. It made me realize I'm not a fan of DMC, but specifically of whatever Kamiya moves to.
Argh, I know, but everytime I find an auction online they go for absurd prices. If only I knew someone in Japan who could help me find one for cheaps.
...
:)
Why would you buy one from Ebay? Grab one from NCS or Play-Asia. I could get you one for fairly cheap, but the shipping would undoubtedly cost up the ass so I don't know if it would be worth it.
Weapons, Accessories, Items, Techniques and Treasures (don't know what the treasures are yet, they're all listed as coming soon) are all available for purchase.
What this penguin looking motherfucker said. This is an orgy on the eyes. So far, so good, DMC3 SE level with the potential to go beyond restrained so far only by my meager progress in the game. A must buy for any fan of action games. We've really seen some magnificent action games come out recently.
There's no need to buy the PS3 version. This was developed for the 360, so get it for its native system. J-360 if you can because fuck waiting until January.
Was on the fence with this even after playing the demo but picked it up last night with the preorder CD on the way home.
I can't figure out how to do the challenge of the alfheims, any of you guys figure out how to do shit with the extremely limited number of punches/kicks?
This game has just been getting better and better and more and more awesome all the way up till Chapter 6... then FUCK. FUCKING ESCORT MISSION.
Goddammit game designers, haven't you figured out yet that they're fucking horrendous?
Well the escort mission wasn't too annoying on lower difficulties. Could be bad later though. There's also been a couple of sequences that have dragged a bit, but all in all this game has been fucking awesome so far. I believe I'm closing in on the end now, but there's still going to be an asston of things to do, there's secrets up the wazoo and obviously the higher difficulties to get through.
But yeah, this game definitely stomps the living shit out of DMC4.
This is what I was expecting from the next gen DMC, not DMC 4 (though the angel theme is somewhat comparable between the two).
Just finished my first playthrough. The bosses in this game were all seriously brilliant, fun as fuck to fight. I don't know if it's my game of the year, but it's right up there with Batman and Uncharted 2 as the best games I've played this year.
Now it's time to work on getting the metric asston of secrets.
I think there's even a hidden boss and a new ending that can be earned by getting all the achievements/finding all the secret stone items. I don't think anyone has done it yet to know for sure though, because that's going to take quite a while to accomplish and requires beating the game on Normal, Hard and whatever the uber hard difficulty is.
Yeah, I'm not that far through the game but I think this may be my GotY as well. It's hard because there have been so many excellent action titles released recently but this is one I can see myself playing for years a la DMC 3 SE.
Yeah that's really the thing, I could easily see myself playing it for years as well.
Working on the Alfheim Portals now, before moving on to hard difficulty. Some of them are fucking hard as hell.

Neat preview with a lot of wild footage.
God, I want this game so badly. I haven't been this obsessed in counting the days before release since DMC3 or Ikaruga hitting XBLA.
I got the US demo yesterday and I must say I like the gameplay more than DMC. More combos, more craziness, it's a must have. I'm going in to preorder today.
NA demo coming to PSN and Live on 12/3

DAAAAAMN
The other entrants look good too.
I think I saw the PS3 demo up last night as well.
Yeah, it's up. Strangely 500 and something megs larger than the Japanese PS3 demo. Haven't played it yet, but its likely the same.
Supposedly, Sony had been working with Sega to improve the American port so that it was in line with the 360 version. I guess it's possible that this affected the size of the demo.
This game is a riot, controls feel really good.
I haven't played any of the demos but I saw a Eurogamer comparison that blamed much of the poor performance on BluRay access speeds. They said that the demo played noticably better than the full game for this reason and they were surprised that the full game didn't have an install option.
If you're interested, here's the ridiculously detailed comparison: http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/di...onetta-faceoffQuote:
So, bearing in mind the enormity of the task in bringing the PS3 version up to par with the Xbox 360 game, what - realistically - can we expect post-release? Well, according to this thread over on the PlatinumGames forum, SEGA has been asked to produce a patch to alleviate the "overwhelming load times" in Bayonetta. Given that the game shows all the signs of having big memory-management issues, it's a bit of a head-scratcher as to how SEGA will achieve this, although since loading times were not an issue on the demo the obvious answer would be to implement an optional HDD installation.
With the game delayed until 2010 for Western markets, there have been rumblings that the PS3 game may see various improvements, but it's difficult to see where the developers can go from here. A lot of the accepted tricks in lowering the bandwidth overhead have already been used. For example, SEGA's developers have implemented lower-resolution alpha buffers: transparency effects are less defined, saving tons of bandwidth, but the reduction in quality is barely noticeable during gameplay. (It's a popular trick, even used by the most mighty of first-party PS3 developers.)
The crux of the matter is that the PlatinumGames team has created a game engine that targets all the things that the Xbox 360 architecture does well, to the point where it's almost as if the core development was on similar lines to a first-party exclusive. Indeed, Bayonetta is technically more ambitious than many of Microsoft's own titles this year.
As it is, the layering of transparencies, the sheer amount of them all over the screen, plus the added overhead of post-processing - it's the sort of thing that you shouldn't really be making central to the game experience in a multi-platform release, because the PS3 hardware just doesn't compete in this regard. Short of completely rewriting the game in the way that Tecmo did for the PS3 rendition of Ninja Gaiden 2, Bayonetta is always going to have problems. Even if the overdraw (transparency upon transparency) levels were reduced, the sheer amount of effects on-screen at any given point is never going to favour the RSX.
Interesting. This whole thing finally makes sense. I wish developers would pick a platform and tap it instead of having to settle for middleware garbage that waters everything down, but I guess those days are essentially over.
Am I misreading something? Isn't that... exactly what Platinum did with Bayonetta? Focusing on the strengths of the 360 to make an impressive game?Quote:

I mean, anybody not blind could have told you months ago that the PS3 version was an afterthought, what with Platinum not even bothering with it and all.
Yes, but now they are pissing away time and money trying to drag the port along. I should have been more clear in that the tapped platform should be the only platform.
Of course Dyne really nailed it when you combine it with what I just said. Develop for PC. Fuck everything else. The end.
I can live with that.
oh wah wah entertainment is only fitting for those with high enough disposable incomes to buy one PC rig after another wah wah graphics and tech don't mean shit to having fun if they aren't on the bleeding edge wah wah if it's a year old the tech is outdated and anything older is downright garbage wah wah...
It wasn't that you weren't clear. It's that you spoke without thinking and are now trying to soften the blow. Everyone knows the 360 version is the version to get. Everyone knows that Platinum games focused only on that platform. And everyone knows that it makes more sense to lever the scalable resources already in place to make this multi-plat in order to sell to a larger combined user base.
Great minds think alike. Yoshi and Dyne.Quote:

One can only dream, yeah?
It's dull to think that there's only your way or the highway. Duller still to think that "not my way" is the polar opposite for all you stand for. I mean, it's one thing to go "LAWL NINTENDO" and another to go on and on (and on!) about devs NEEDING to create for only the bleeding edge, fuck the rest. Sorry to break it to you, but the PS2 was underpowered and won the day, even the darling "hardcore" choose 360 over PS3, all boon-dongles aside. So it's not like someone who advocates entertainment for entertainment's sake i.e. on as many distribution channels as possible (or at least the most popular among your target audience) means put it on the least tech-savy thing possible ONLY and not a thing else.
If that were the case, Bayonetta would be a DS exclusive and you'd be having a heart attack right now.
I don't get this at all. Platinum made Bayonetta for the 360. Sega made a half-assed port for PS3. So what? Buy the 360 version and be happy. From a gamer perspective it's an easy choice, and from a stockholder perspective I'm sure Sega will make a few bucks off the PS3 version. There's no downside to bitch about.
James
It is more fun to bitch about something we would never buy.
Just get the 360 version, which is clearly the best and native version. Multiplats are only a distraction when there is no definitive version available. The 360 version is clearly the definitive and only intended version. As a multi-console owner, you have no argument to make aside from just wanting to argue. All this time spent arguing about this game when you could instead be playing it and appreciating its majesty. Let me see what other games you're playing. Ok, they all suck compared to this one unless they comprise NSMBW, Mushihemesama, Uncharted 2, and Demon's Souls.
The fact that you already don't own this game is a concern to the council. In the depths of Hades you shall remain.
What a fantastic game. Rarely has a demo made me want to run out and buy the game IMMEDIATELY, but this one does. I first played the PS3 demo and it played pretty well but has some slowdowns here and there. Then I play the 360 demo and it is a smoother experience (and I did a lot better). Day 1 purchase for sure.
Watch out for them slowdowns.
Awesome demo
I'm not even a huge fan of these games (despite buying many of them)...maybe that's why I think it's awesome
No by the demo it seems like the best beatem up to come out in forever.
This is a must buy for any DMC fan because this is the step forward that DMC 4 should have taken. I can't really say one bad thing about this game.
Just played the demo and it seems pretty fucking awesome so far. Really looking forward to this one. I personally have been digging Platinum's output.
While the demo is cool, stylish, and all that jazz, I'm not seeing how this is the what DMC4 should have been. Unless you count 10' tall, buxom hair-tights lady as "a step forward." Granted it is fun, but I could see the game getting hella repetitive if it tries to go on for too long, or doesn't mix things up from time to time. The demo is fun exactly because it's a demo - Bayonetta feels like an amazing 5-minute game.
Brutal Legend had an AMAZING demo. Terrible game, but amazing demo. So I'm trying to keep that in mind with Bayonetta. To its credit, I picked DMC4 up again for $10 because now I'm in the beat-em-up mood, so...
DMC4 was a pile of shit though.
I was pretty disappointed on my first run, but when I came back months later and tried Bloody Palace, I enjoyed it a lot more. It has tons of problems and could never even touch DMC3 in terms of sheer fun and off the walls (see: motorcycle) action, but revving up that sword was pretty aces.
That's my feeling.
DMC3 > DMC > DMC4 > DMC2
It ain't great, but it ain't bottom of the barrel. I'm liking it more at $10 than $60, that's for sure.
Where do Ninja Gaiden and God of War fall in comparison? I am way behind on this subgenre. I've played DMC1-2, NG, and GoW but nothing since in any of those series. And I like the Bayonetta demo.
I dunno - NG is harder than DMC by far, but sometimes in that cheap, unfair death sort of way. GoW is easier in terms of one-on-one battles, but throws way more waves at you throughout than DMC.
GOW2 > DMC3SE > GOW1 > NGS > NGB > DMC3 > DMC > NGS2 > NG2 > NG > DMC4 > HS > DMC2
God Hand > things > videogames.
I still think the original DMC is the best of this subgenre. DMC3 got a little too goofy for me, but I think it's better than any GoW or NG game.
God of War II has better gameplay than the original, but the first had a better story. They're great games, and I love Greek mythology, but I prefer DMC for the gothic horror elements and guns.
The NG games are good, but I never took to the combat.
Helter Skelter. It's better than DMC2.
HS = Heavenly Sword.
I've actually been replaying the original Devil May Cry and, while it is still a great game, there are a bunch of issues that were more or less resolved in later games of the subgenre. The camera in DMC1 is definitely based on Resident Evil, with all the problems that come with it. The angles are a great deal more "cinematic" than later games in the genre, which means that you do a lot of shooting at offscreen enemies. There are also little niggles with the way dodging works, as there's a slight enough delay to really throw you off if you're used to the more responsive and higher priority dodge moves of later games like DMC3 or NG.
 And yet ARBM's explanation was so plausible.
Yoshi, get GoW collection on bluray. Worth a playthru.
I will eventually. I have way too much shit I need to finish to buy anything at release price right now though.
My incentive of finishing games is that I can get rid of the completed games for new stuff.
thread relative:
http://the-nextlevel.com/board/attac...1&d=1260227192
I would put them above NG but I would put just about anything over the new NG games. Really dislike what they did with that series, and the bullshit deaths.
Presentation does matter, folks. And I think the God of War titles actually do a better job than most games in the genre of mixing up the encounters and environments so you never have exactly the same fight twice. As for difficulty, yes, they are easier than the rest of the games on my list but that doesn't mean that they're total pushovers. Plus there's always God/Titan difficulty, which is nice and difficult - it isn't quite Dante Must Die, but it is up there thanks to the way God of War prefers to mostly dispense health orbs via chests and not during combat. That means every hit you take matters.
I was the unfortunate recipient of the PS3 collection and it has been played just once out of HD curiosity. If you have any list of respectable items for trade, I would glady take a look as I'm ready to part with this immediately.
I respect your opinion but the production values drive this game with nothing really else worthwhile about it. The gameplay is eggregiously shallow and not the least bit rewarding. There is no incentive to keep playing to actually get better at this game because there is no such thing as "getting better". Even if there was, there is little to no opportunity to even demonstrate or apply that skill in combat form. It is like playing an interactive movie, and what this being the case, I'd rather get this form of entertainment from a film or a book.
This is in stark contrast to the other games in your list, games like DMC3 SE, the NGs, where the attainment and application of evolved skill is necessary and rewarding when applied.
I disagree. God of War adheres more closely to the pattern memorization model of older games than the other games in the genre, which tend to have more dynamic opponents, but learning the patterns of enemies and which combos to use is a sign of skill advancement. You can't just get by with square square triangle, thanks to the way God of War likes changing up the enemies and/or environments to discourage using a single combo constantly. For instance, it doesn't work on multiple medusae because you'll end up petrified thanks to the delay on the end of the third attack. Same goes if you're dealing with larger enemies that don't get stunned by it. In this way, God of War is actually a lot more like a classic beat-em-up than games like Devil May Cry.
I don't think we disagree. God of War is more of a classic beat-em-up than games like DMC 3 SE, Bayonetta, and the NG games. But I want a deep 3D action game with a sophisticated combat engine when I buy a game in this genre; I don't want a classic beat-em-up based on pattern memorization. This distinction, which you seem to acknowledge, is one reason I think the GOW games should not be included in the same comparison with the aforementioned action titles. For similar reasons, I would exclude HS from being grouped with DMC 3 SE, Bayonetta, and the NG games as well. The latter games aspire to be more than the classic beat-em-up.
