But not a TKO, ever. There will always be upstarts carving out a chunk of the pie, otherwise we wouldn't have had the Genesis, PSX, or 360.
And I'm old enough to remember wanting a Colecovision far more than a 2600. :)

Well someday we might get to the point where consumers deem absolute bleeding edge hardware less important, and an underpowered console can actually sell more based on an affordable above-cost pricetag.
Oh wait...Very possible, but who gives a fuck? My point is not that no one will ever try again, but that the industry at large will get behind a system that works better for the people that drive it.
So you're saying, Frog, that Nintendo'll just scoop everybody up and THAT'S how this will work? I see.
Maybe!
What If, the Wii is it, continues to sell well through doomsday, and your nursing home only ever plays Wii Sports Fun Pak 2052?
That's almost what Nintendo is doing with the Wii, and yes its selling, but how much bitching do we hear from "hardcore" cause it doesn't have enough Ps!!!! You are never going to be able to please everyone with one machine.
No it won't. The industry at large will get behind where ever they think the money is. It will not making a decision based on what is better for the people driving it. It'll make the decision to go where the money is.Quote:

It is totally fine to want a one console future, but anyone who thinks its going to happen anytime soon, is incredibly naive.
It's like labor unions, man. Yeah, big companies can bully workers under the right circumstances, but when you get people together, why would they willingly agree to hand over $15 a disc and spend more on development, have to have their content sifted through and approved, etc if they didn't have to?
Anyway, I said 7 years ago, when I first signed up for TNL, back before the PS3, Wii, and 360 were even announced, that the perceptible difference between graphics would get smaller and smaller, and that the importance of cutting edge hardware would bring costs down, and selling a system at a profit would get more viable and that these circumstances will eventually erode the practical roadblocks to a third party console.
All of that has been 100% correct so far. Keep saying it'll never happen. Buy Sony stock while you're at. Let me know how it works out.
You don't even know what the fuck you're talking about at this point. You've lost the thread.
Next step's to start spelling Microsoft with a dollar sign.

Sure, Nintendo went too low end, but in another generation or two, the difference between a $300 spec and an $800 spec will be fairly minimal as far as the end-user is concerned. It's getting smaller already, and that trend will continue. The other side to it is that as generations get longer (as many seem to be acknowledging they will) there's more time for a system to drop in price, and more gradual adoption becomes viable.
Exactly. They're all pouring money into the first parties pockets for lack of an alternative. If they have a way to avoid that, they'll take it.Quote:

It's impossible to say when. I think the opportunity will be here by the time the next gen rolls around, but it could be another gen or so before someone takes it. Sometimes people don't want to rock the boat until they have to.Quote:

That whole 'the perceptible difference between graphics would get smaller and smaller' part is wrong though.
I can clearly tell the difference between Wii games and real games.
I'd pay $800 for a console knowing that it will play every game that comes out for the next 4-6 years. It beats paying thousands for 3 separate sets of redundant consoles and accessories.
