Yup, even then. Maybe not for a piano or anything, but try to make a guitar, sax, or a violin sound natural through MIDI. There is only certain information available for each note in MIDI formats and a lot of subtleties to instruments that fall outside of that. (obviously most modern MIDI samples ARE recorded from live instruments, btw).

Anyway, I wasn't speculating here, either. I know for a fact that this is how they did it and why they did it, because the developers themselves admitted it. And I also know people picked up on it and bitched about it before they ever addressed it (and before the Wii version was out). So not only can I tell, but so can anyone else who's actually listening.

Making it sound natural is as simple as triggering a recording of someone playing one of those instruments.

Sounds like you've never heard BFD2 software when a professional drummer is sitting behind the trigger kit.

If you've got the money to spend, the drive space available, and the processor to run it all, you can recreate any instrument to a degree that could probably fool many professionals and could definitely fool everybody else.

Hell, someone literally sells a midi patch where they hired a world-class orchestra, put them in a world-class auditorium, and told them to just sit there quietly with their instruments at rest. If you want to buy that, your MIDI orchestra won't be missing the sound of a professional orchestra making unavoidable extraneous noises in an auditorium.

Well you'd have to have recordings of someone playing a bunch of different subtle variations on those instruments, because MIDI is only able to control the volume, pitch, velocity, aftertouch, duration, chorus, and reverb of a note, and there are many more subtleties to many instruments. For drums, keyboard instruments, etc it tends to be fine, but it can't really convey the subtle changes in bowing speed and pressure on a violin unless you sit there and record a dozen different violin sample banks, and at that point it's not really "simple," and it's not saving you time. I'm not saying you can't do it, I'm saying Telltale Games didn't.

The music in Tales of Monkey Island was written to be able to be stored in a small space and played back in real-time on a Wii. On the PC it was recorded with higher quality samples, but not radically re-written, because the whole point of even doing it that way was to save time and money. Perhaps they weren't pushing the MIDI format to its limits to make you happy. It doesn't matter.

We can argue about MIDI's versatility and who knows more about MIDI (I'm sure it's you) all day but it won't make me wrong about Tales of Monkey Island's music, because it's just a documented fucking fact. I explained it clearly, you said I didn't know what I was talking about, and I did.

Whether or not you can do better is not the point. You can write an angry nerd letter to Michael Land if you want and tell him his samples suck. The fact is, I could tell their process by listening, and I was right. There is no arguing this. Accept it and move on.

No, RoleTroll is speaking common sense. We've all heard shit that sounds synthetic and we know it when we hear it. Regardless of whether Josh thinks he can make it sound better, it doesn't in this case, and it's all the Wii's fault.

It's the same as if I said "cgi doesn't look real." I don't care if in some cases it CAN pass for real, we know it's not usually a passable substitute. I just activated Josh's nerd rage somehow when I said the word MIDI.
