I'm curious to know if you grew up reading comics, I was never interested in them or cartoons past the age of 15. My buddies think I am a fucking idiot for not liking Spooge Bob. I'd rather watch some fucking discovery/history channel shiznit.

I absolutely love animation. That doesn't mean I'm really all that entertained by the average kids' show, but a lot of stuff from the 30s, 40s, and 50s still holds up as brilliant, and there's been good stuff in every decade since, if not as much. Old school Disney, Warner Bros, and Fleischer still holds up today.
Comics can be great, but I've never been interested in the superhero stuff that dominates them. But I absolutely love Sam & Max, Berserk, and Robert Crumb. It's kind of a shame comics get pigeonholed so much.

I like Invincible, it's a superhero comic, but it's not Batman, or Spiderman or anybody established. Should you dare to make the trip into your local comic shop the owner might be able to suggest some shit for you based on your likes and dislikes, as long as he's not a shilling piece of trash.
I'll 2nd the Green Lantern shit, and Y. Y is really fucking good.
Spongebob sucks. Having said that, there's a lot of great cartoons out there. I'm currently re-watching Samurai Jack right now for the first time in years and it's great fun, and I can't wait for the new Venture Bros. season to start up soon. The Spectacular Spider-Man series that's had two seasons so far is the best non-comic book Spider-Man ever. Avatar: The Last Airbender was fantastic, and I'm hoping the studio that did that has something comparable in the works. Genndy Tarakovsky has a new series coming out this year (last I heard) called Sym-Bionic Titan that should be a ton of fun. There's great stuff out there far more worth the time than whatever sit-com is trying to shit itself all over your tv screen and yet still commanding infinitely more respect.
As for comics, I wouldn't know where to begin. You can get the full story of Bone in one handy giant volume. Watchmen was good but V for Vendetta is better. Transmetropolitan will eat your face, and that's a good thing. Consider all that a starting point.
-edit- And Chux is right about Invincible. Popcorn superhero stuff, sure, but really well done, entertaining, and bloody as hell when it needs to be.

Y was ok but didn't keep my interest. Same with Fables. V for Vendetta IS better than Watchmen, imo, if you're not interested in getting all Citizen Kane-y about the medium.

I've tried but I just can't get into comics at all. I can see the next panels in my peripheral vision, and the dialog seems to mostly suck. Cartoons can be awesome though.
Justice League was Fanfuckingtastic, and Unlimited was good particularly the first one, second one kind of got worse but I still loved it.
I liked Kim Possible, and earlier Fairly odd parents was genuinely funny, even my dad who HATES cartoons could stand it and laughed at a few of the jokes. But from what i can tell the newer shit is not... that good. And the movies were kind of fun in a weird trippy sort of way.
As far as Cartoons?

I can't even list all the cartoons I watched/loved as a kid. I really liked Pepperann, Doug, DB(Z), Animaniacs, Little Bear, Hey Arnold, ANGRY BEAVERS, Rocko's modern life, and the shitastic Sailor Moon dub was my all time favorite. Also Samurai Pizza cats.
Cartoons are just relaxing, especially in the morning with a bowl of cereal in your lap. (Cereal+ Spongebob= <3)

Family Guy was really rough and lame the first couple seasons. I hated it, but more recently have grown to really like the later stuff. The very last season is a little too preachy liberal and self-referential but still has more comedy than I Fucking Dated Your Mother or whatever you kids are watching.
Same with American Dad, started with stale humor and poorly drawn everything, and later kept everything congruent so the jokes could land. I'd say he's stretching it thin on that new show, probably best to work a different angle for a while.

American Dad was wayyyy too similar and kind of soon? I dunno. I hate that, too.

No. It's over. The whole comic is over, it's not like some Batman shit where it goes on forever. There are 10 books which are collections of all the comics that came out. It's the entire series in 10 volumes. Each volume is called a "trade" and it contains I think like 3-5 of the original comics or whatever?Quote:

Transmetropolitan is a complete story. You start at the first graphic novel, pick up each one in turn, and when you've bought the last you've read all there is. One writer and one artist from beginning to end. It's mean-spirited bad ass science fiction told from street level, and one of the best books you'll ever read.

I watch a bunch of cartoons when I have cable. Admittly, there isn't a lot of new cartoons on the old cartoon channels. Sponge Bob might be the only thing Nick has right now that gets new eps. When they finished Avatar, and canceled My Life as A Teenage Robot, that channel became almost dead to me. I liked the first few seasons of Fairly Odd Parents, but they keep adding in stupid crap like babies or whatever.
Disney, crap, I don't even know. I don't think they show cartoons anymore.
Cartoon network has some good stuff. Some of the adult swim stuff is good, Like venture brothers and squidbillies. But a lot of it depends on your taste or if you are retarded, mentally challenged or on LSD
Venture brothers goes without saying.
I don't know about their more kid friendly stuff they show during the day. Some of that can be pretty hit and miss.
I don't really know anything about comics. I stopped reading them after grocery stores stopped carrying them + price increase. I used to collect Transformers comics and Sonic the hedgehog. But Sonic went to shit like, after issue 50. We'll all always have Mecha Madness though.
I tend to like to dig up old stuff. Old mangas. Old US comic strips like Donald or Little nemo. I don't really dig on the whole recycle Super Hero B and A a million times thing, that the US does.

I've heard lots of good things about Nexus but never read it myself. It's a little daunting considering it's around 100 issues.
There was a miniseries called Shock Rockets that I really fucking loved about a decade ago, but the imprint it was on was short-lived and I don't think it was ever collected. Pretty gay. It's only 6 issues though, so it might not be too hard to track down.

There was this one guy at Barnes and Nobles who promised me i'd like Runaways. I didn't.
Comics generally suck so much. If you like them, fine, but don't pretend they'd be interesting who doesn't have comics-compromise programmed into his or her brain already. Watchmen is interesting, but it's a comic. I'd never mistake it for something i could show to show to any non-comics person and expect him or her to get beyond the first few pages.
Neil Gaiman-written comics are the closest mainstream comics get to good writing, but a lot of his stuff is wordswordswords. His book-books are really good!
This is the best cartoon. Brian Doyle Murray is the best voice actor.
Runaways is pretty bad.
I could see liking it if one was 12 years old and somehow had an encyclopedic knowledge of the Marvel back catalog? But these things, they do not make sense together.

I think the first wave of Nicktoons really helped to revitalize TV animation and pull it out of that wasteland it became in the '80s when all we had was garbage like Thundercats and GI Joe. Ren and Stimpy really changed the way a lot of animation was written and concieved, and Rugrats (and later Klasky Csupo stuff like Duckman) was pretty influential too. Sure, Rugrats wore out its welcome being on the air for 10 years (that might be what's happening to Spongebob too) but yeah, the Nicktoons started off good.Quote:

Been slowly getting back into comics by way of trade paperbacks. I love the fact that I can get something with volume, that covers some sensible arc of story. Right now I've been big on Ultimate Spiderman (before they "reset" it), and Scott Pilgrim, along with single-run stories on Batman (Dark Knight, Hush) and Superman (A Superman for All Seasons).
