Data East Collection Coming to Wii

First off, the ratings board revealed a collection of Data East arcade games for Wii, called Data East Arcade Classics, containing Bad Dudes vs. Dragon Ninja (!), Burger Time, Caveman Ninja, Street Slam, Secret Agent, Magical Drop III, and more, published by Majesco. It would appear that Data East (or G-mode, the company that holds the rights to Data East's games) doesn't feel like charging 8 bucks for each game on the Virtual Console Arcade.

Other surprises include Crash 'N The Boyz: Street Challenge (which was known as Crash 'N The Boys: Street Challenge on the NES), the Kunio (River City Ransom) sports game, and Tomena Sanner, the intriguingly quirky-looking one-button WiiWare running game from Konami!

This collection could be completely awesome if they do it right. I hope it isn't a letdown like the SNK and Tecmo ones were.

I'm also hoping for Vapor Trail & Wolf Fang (Rohga). Skull Fang is OK. Fighters' History needs to be in there also. "TAKE A GOOD LOOK AT THAT!" :LOL: Then there's Mizoguchi's win quote: "Return to the gutter, you honorless insect!". The announcer sounds like the same one from Virtua Fighter 3.

Midnight Resistance would be great using a Wii Classic Controller. The right analog stick could be used to simulate the knob on the controller, with the trigger buttons to fire & jump.

Damn the license limits on games like RoboCop 1 & 2, Captain America, etc.

Heavy Barrel rocks. Ripping up everything in sight (even bosses) with the HB gun is awesome. One other game this collection needs is Death Brade. This did get a SNES version in Japan, but it's somewhat cut down- three characters are dropped.

Magical Drop III = worth the price of the entire collection. Still would be nice to have all 3 for the sake of completion, but still. One of the finest puzzle games out there.

Heh, the Wii can't win. It gets bashed (rightfully) for having waggle gimmick games but then it also gets bashed when good stuff comes to it. I would like to see this comp multi-format as well but having it on one system is better than nothing.

If the Wii were priced at the correct price point for the 10 year old tech with a gimmick controller it is I would consider getting one, but it isn't so fuck it and any games released exclusively on it.

It's not that anyone who has ever complained about the Wii being technically or gimmicknichally a pile of garbage has ever been wrong, but maybe we can give it a rest in this thread? Porting 15 year-old games to 10 year-old hardware might not be a such travesty, yes?

Meh, it only has about half the games it should, but for $20 I'll buy it, providing it has some extras.

The good news is that the team behind this compilation, G1M2, are working on SNK Classics 0 (pre-Neo Geo games) for the PS2 and PSP.

I bitch and post from a Mac... but Macs are actually good pieces of hardware. The Wii just sucks. Its output options sucks -- how about being a smart Nintendo and catering to maybe the folks who grew up with the console, not the 12 year olds now -- no 15khz rgb -- the only new system that can't do it easily. Only one. Most people don't even know what this is, but a lot of us use it exclusively...GC had it fine. But when you release all these virtual games that run natively in 240p and they end up looking like washed out crap, that's is what pisses me off. Why step backwards? No VGA either without transcoder... also lame.

You know what's also lame? Shitty 480p only... Also shitty is that they get exclusives that should never ever be on that system, such as TvC...

The entire thing is just full of suck, that's the problem. It's just a step backwards hardware wise and they are the whores of the gaming industry -- Nintendo let's anyone put whatever they want to in their slots and they like it. They lick their lips and ask for more. No thank you.

lol... so anyone who purchased it actually play it? Hows the emulation?

I've played Bump 'n Jump, Heavy Barrel, and Bad Dudes so far. The emulation seemed great to me, but I don't have the eye for seeing discrepancies that other people seem to. I've heard of a few minor things, but nothing major has been reported.

I think it's a great set for the price, and I really hope we get another one.

I just got this. So far, the emulation is mostly solid. Lock 'n Chase has terrible sound issues with sounds playing over sounds, though. Most of the other issues I noticed like the missing sound effect in Bump 'n Jump are minor. I also noticed that the collection doesn't support 240p and is upscaled (but not filtered). There are some other oddities like difficulty options having to be unlocked.

Issues that I have seen complained about in professional reviews are the menus and the screen display. I didn't see anything wrong with the menus. They aren't too fancy and they work. I'm surprised that the "automatic stretching" thing was even mentioned, since many VC games and the SNK collection don't adjust for widescreen either (it's either a minor or major issue depending on the TV, but the image would have been less accurate if it was squished for 4:3 support in anamorphic widescreen).

I also noticed something that isn't an emulation issue. The bug in Burgertime where the music for the pepper item sometimes plays twice is intact.
