Let me go get my Charlie Brown shirt, it's time to kick this fucking football.
they can build a new sonic game "from the ground up" but can't spend a few months porting vf5r to the consoles
gg sega
Now the only question is will it kind of suck or really suck?
...maybe THIS time...
it'd be nice if they went the way of gradius rebirth or mega man 9.
It'd be nice to actually see someone successfully update their old sprites to HD 2D art. Unfortunately few people seem to understand why the design decisions made out of necessity are good regardless of resolution.
That and they need to hire some talented motherfuckers to pull it off. They should get that Capcom guy that did the Powerstone designs.
I love how the opening sentence is actually missing the number of years ago.
I understand Udon is doing the design work for this?
I'm tempted to shit on this... so why not? How about we wait for some progress/screens/videos before we completely shit on this. We're only in stage one of the sega cycle guys~!
I think it's important to shit on it now just in case it turns out well.
You're fucking up the cycle. There will be consequences! Doom I say, doom!
Mega Man 9 is pretty bangin', it's true. It's as good as Mega Man 2, which means something if you don't hate the franchise in the first place (in which case, YOUR TINY MEANINGLESS OPINION).
What does Wario have to do with major series or the Wii have to do with HD? And it sold pretty well if I remember right.
I'm saying it was a better looking game than whatever you have in mind as being "HD".
Well how about this: It spent two fucking years in development, which is like twice as much as Ikaruga. Making a low-res 2D game doesn't require the same number of people, but it does take effort and talent to do well.
In the case of that, the Rebirth games, and MM9, the retro style is also part of the point. It's like filming a movie in black and white. It's not necessarily because you can't afford color film. If you made them in HD, they wouldn't be as effective.
DOOOOOMMM!
Sonic has been dead to me for many many years now.
If they wanna retro, then let's retro! [/bottle break]
How awesome would it be if Midway and id let them license a Sonic DOOM and Sonik Kombat!
Don't ask me what he's holding.

edit: Fuck, beaten 29784698347 minutes ago. I should refresh once in a while.
Does not fly. If Mega Man 9 looked like a dolled up Mega Man 8 (but in HD omg), I wouldn't have given a shit. Looking like the old games got my attention. (and Mega Man 8 was terrible).
I am soiten I am not alone here.
Biscuits and gravy, Yoshi. There's better foods, certainly. On Paper.
You all know what happens whenever a new Sonic game is announced.

This thread? Doing doughnuts in the parking lot.
Where is the evidence that it will? Existing 2d games sell like ass compared to the big names, few of which are anywhere near 2d, HD with insane artwork or not.
Clearly the major devs don't think they will sell that well. We'd like to think that a true over the top intense sequel to say SotN would sell like wild fire but the reality is that it probably wouldn't. Perhaps if they release these simple Gradius Rebirth type games and see enough interest they will come along and make the types of games you're (we're) wanting them to.
Unfortunately joe six pack who thinks GTA, Madden, and Halo to be the end all of gaming or Grandma who wants WiiFit for her chubby grandkid rule the industry. When the next Ikaruga outsells the Sims or Rockband get back to me on this.
We should consider ourselves lucky to get another Sonic in 2d, sure it's a shitty attitude but thems the breaks and you know it. Search deep inside yourself, you know it to be true.
RE: Melf: image
So, why don't they pull the 'old cop' routine? Game starts with sonic holed up in a weekly hotel, drunk and unshaven, all his friends have abounded him, and Eggman has taken over large blocks of the city.
Then, something goes awry and the dead animals Eggman's killed start to come back to life and even he gets worried. So, Tails breaks away from the friends and visits Sonic to convince him to save the day!
Now Sonic and Tails are back at it alone with Eggman AND zombies to rid the land of!!
What's wrong with Dimps? The speed segments in Sonic Unleashed on the PS2/Wii build were a lot of fun, and the first Sonic Rush was great (Never played the second one).
Also, I'm interested, but afarid to be excited about this.
Considering the last game that would fit my criteria of being a major franchise and actually utilizing real hardware was Symphony of the Night, I'd say that's your proof. It's inexplicable that it has been that long though.
The publishers have no clue what will sell beyond a dozen or so sure things. They prove that 1,000 times every year.
The speed bits of Unleashed were not great, they were a parody of what good Sonic was supposed to be. They were the 3D equivelent of Sonic Advance 2, a shallow "hold up to win" thing that felt more like F-Zero than a platformer.
Sonic Rush Adventure was pretty great though.
Same here. The last one I played was Sonic Adventure on the DC, (which oddly enough was released 10 years ago today) I haven't payed attention to a single sonic game since. =/
I'm interested in seeing Sonic in 2D again....but instead of setting myself up for disappointment, I'll forget about it and maybe it'll be a pleasant surprise.
i could probably live without this game
As far as the whole low-res sprites versus high-res sprites things goes... I just don't know if I can give a shit. If the sprites are new, I'm good. Game can look gorgeous either way.
It seems way, way easier to fuck up an HD game and make it feel like a cheap flash project, though.
Sonic Adventure was awesome. Gave me hope for 3D Sonic. Then every successive game failed. Bad.
Give a new 2D Sonic to that American dev that did Contra 4. I'd get that day one.
WayForward would probably care enough to get it right.
they could hire some ocremix guys to do the music
it would be the ultimate sonic fangame
The way to fix sonic is easy. Just hire Yasuhara back. Simple.
Ok then, start naming games that were hyped to hell and back and didn't sell for shit and then name games that no one ever heard of then started selling like mad. Katamari might fit the latter. Nothing else comes to mind. Perhaps some of the music games as well. That's about it.
They have a pretty good clue what will and won't sell, they spend ass loads on the sure things and half ass nearly everything else because of ROI concerns. You sound like you want technical advancement in games for the sake of technical advancement when in reality clever gameplay trumps all. Just accept that the industry is the way it is for a reason.
You sound like a car enthusiast that thinks every car needs 400bhp and AWD and can't figure out why the Camry sells like mad.
King of Fighters!
Granted, it's a bad sequel in most terms, but they did some insane shit with the animation and going through redrawing it all for HD. Folks say BlazBlu is more bang for your buck resolution-wise, but animates terribly. All said though no one but old school gamers or animation prudes give a shit between their differences. If at the end of the day a game gives the experience people are looking for, it'll do well.
So the real issue isn't if a 2D HD game will sell well (although I don't think BlazBlu or KoF are lighting up retail charts) - it's substance from two angles. One, what are developers willing/interested in doing? Two, what is the audience willing/interested in trying? My guess is a 2D HD revival of the old Sonic spirit will only appeal to those still holding a candle for the mascot. He's had numerous failed games market-wise, critically, and among the fans. Devs have switched in and out, and none of their design decisions seem consistent.
On the bright side, if there's any way to service the franchise, this has the most promise. At least visually - I've yet to hear a fan who felt the 3D ones were better than the 2D originals. Although it'll be a matter of substance (level design, gameplay, pace, et al) that determines if it's any good.
I really hope they go with Gonzo for the animation. Those guys handled Wario Land: Shake It! really well.
I thought IG did Shake?
Just curious, anyone have any idea how the Sonic games sell on XBLA?
I think I get what you mean. That the cost of drawing/animating something in HD is pretty high in comparison to hijacking old sprites and working them into a new game? Thus in doing so, you can reasonably turn a good profit from a $10 game filled with rehashed work? And that a game with stunning new 2D would need to cost more to recoup its cost PLUS factor in that only a niche base will buy it anyway?
THEY ALL LOOK THE SAME TO YOU??
I wouldn't say it animates terribly. Arcana Heart? That animates terribly. This? Not so much. I just wouldn't say that BlazBlue's animation is bad just because it isn't as good as KOF XII's.
I have to imagine that it's selling at a decent pace as well. The LE run seemed to disappear from shelves pretty fast and I had to help a few friends find copies.
But Hero, I was making an Asian People Joke.
The cost of anything new is a LOT more than re-hash/cycling it. Besides, half the time it doesn't matter as long as the game looks decent and plays well. MvC2 uses sprites that date back to XMen COTA and SFA but the game still rocks balls, titties, ass, and lips.
If a game dev thinks less than a million will buy their game they can't afford to spend that much on the game w/o charging accordingly which further drives down sales of a niche game. Besides, it's in the industries best interest to maintain an outlet for small time risky games or we'll get nothing but Halo, Madden, and the Sims over and over again.
Drives me nuts when people act like a game has to be technically advanced to be good and that because it's on X system it's automatically shit and would have been better on Y. Most times a game doesn't need to look fancy pants. Gradius 5 would have been just as good if done entirely with sprites.
Yes!
KoF12 could have done slightly better if the word of mouth out of the gate wasn't Retardedly Bad.
Watch, this game will end up being tight-bangin.
Jak 3 was kind of lame (I'm not sure how much of the design was his doing, though). He's at Namco now, right? It's odd how the media was mostly praising him for Sonic in the early '90s then Naka somehow ended up getting way more credit shortly afterwards. Naka even called him useless after Sonic 1 in an interview.
Yeah, he's at Namco's American studio, yeah.
He deserves credit for the game's level design, which was always what made it great or bad. I think he understands what makes level design work in a way Sonic Team no longer does.
Sonic feels like a cover band version of itself now. It's this weird exaggeration of what Sonic really is.

sonic rivals 3 believe
2D Sonic in HD? If it follows the spirit of Sonic Rush, I'm all for it.
Yeah, it is ugly. I was hoping 2D would mean the art and not just the gameplay
Wow. Bryce 3D outputs high-res?
I think someone confused Sonic with Dr. Seuss.
Tim Burton making this shit?
Lol x 800,000. Now populate it with those black silhouetted Microsoft clipart guys slathered in the Photoshop bevel effect to finish the look.
damn, it's just pikachu?!
and gimme sonic 2 two the after years. that way he'll only have the one GOOD friend and maybe we'll get to play knuckles as dlc. buh!
I hope this game is based on he comic book, runs on the House of the Dead Overkill engine and just has you shoot the supporting cast.
and archie is a hidden character.
He fights alongside his good friends, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
Bigs the Cat as a playable character....or no buy for me.
Sonic shouldn't even be in this game. It should be like crappy direct to DVD movies like "National Lampoon's Van Wilder: The Rise of Taj." Even though it says Van Wilder in the title, there is no Van Wilder in the movie. Just do the same shit in the Sonic games.
Rise of Taj was actually in theaters. It might be one of the worst comedies of all time, too.
All they need to do to make me happy with a new Sonic is make Sonic CD 2. That's it, that's all I want. 1080p would be nice to see, and level layouts that take full advantage of the extra info widescreen gives, but anything beyond that is too clever for its own good.
James
James wins. Animality.
WOW...that really surprises me...saw this on TV yesterday and I figured it was straight to DVD. Even the guy who played Taj/Kumar seemed to be breaking in and out of his accent the whole entire movie...sometimes changing accents in the middle of a sentence. Horrible shit.
But yeah, they'll find some way to fuck up this new Sonic. I just don't care anymore.
Well, we all know if I was the director, and concept designer of a new sonic game. It would sell indefenently, you know what I mean. Like a Sonic hentai where all the characters are fubared and the humans are living happy. Sonic of course being a freedom fighter is a labeled a terrorist and there is daily hedgehog beatings and killings. Whoops I dun it again:bang:
I would buy two.
Pretending for a moment that this wasn't a grammatical nightmare and a good story idea (this involves pretending really hard!) why are you talking about setting and plot when saying what a great game you've got in mind? Take this to www.fanfic.net so the right people can make fun of you.
James
That's where James finds his stories about Coleco-tan and Amiga-tan getting all kawaii-desu with each other.
huh?
