I still remember the first time I was on stage and I pulled out my best "HOW YALL DOIN" just like I'd seen on MTV countless time. You know the times where people say whatever the fuck they want and 10,000 idiots start flipping out. When everyone (all 6 of em) didn't go apeshit like they were supposed to I had no fucking clue what to do. The next time I told a story about how every time I did that everyone just stared at me.

I figure you are just supposed to say whatever you feel like saying, but I have never been on stage.

The best stage banter I've ever seen live was the dude from the Long Winters. He handled playing to 30 people really well.

I've always liked Motorheads stage banter, where they could say plenty (because they're Motorhead) but they simply go out, Lemmy says, "We are Motorhead, we play rock and roll," and they play their set. Set is done, Motorhead leaves without saying anything except maybe, "Thank you, goodnight." Most bands don't need to say anything, except Rollins Band, I might actually prefer the banter.

If you're a small local act starting out or relative unknown, your best bet is something like Motorhead or less (being nothing at all, just play the music).

Every year my college had a battle of the bands. Most of the time it was a pretty terrible mix of jam/ska bands with a few actual decent acts smattered in. One year a local townie punk band played and the lead singer did a fucking perfect imitation of David Lee Roth for the first 5 minutes of the show. Everybody stood around very confused and in the middle of some random outburst the band opened into their set and played 25 minutes of some of the most unique punk rock that I've ever seen. It was pretty amazing and the won the battle.

I saw another show by these guys about a week later and they played a straight forward show. However, the singer of ones of the bands they beat (high school kids screaming, sounded like hatebreed) was in the crowd. He started calling the lead singer of the punk band a faggot and a bunch of other shit. The lead singer (who was very um...unique) just played it up being as faggy as he possibly could. Finally the kid got up close to the stage and the lead singer leaned down and gave the dude a big kiss. It was perfect. Of course the kid got even more pissed and was about to hit the singer, when the bass player (who looked amazing like Seth Rogen) took his guitar and just shoved it straight into the kids face. Me and some guy dragged the kid out of the room and the band went on playing.

It comes from that college hippie culture. Give a bunch of former band kids some weed and plop them in some sociology classes and you'll have a ska band within a week.
