Dish network and tuners.

I was finally able to drop cable and get hooked up with Dish Network yesterday.

The setup is an HD DVR on tv 1 in the main media room with the streaming connection to tv 2 in the bedroom. I have set up on tv 1 all the shows I want to have recorded. The box is set to dual mode. I thought everything was fine until last night I had a recording set for Spike tv. I had the box on tv 1 tuned into Spike with the tv off. I was watching another channel on tv 2 when it prompted me if I wanted to record the show on Spike. I said yes and it changed the channel to Spike. When I tried to change back to the channel I was watching it said if I changed channels the recording would be cancelled. WTF?

Also when going through all my scheduled recordings each one has a clock icon with a #2 on it which I'm assuming means to record on tuner 2? I see no options to change that.

Does that second box not have its own tuner? That's kind of weird.

The second tv does not have a tuner. It somehow receives it's signal from the main box.

You must have been recording another channel at the same time then. Was that not the case? If both my tuners are recording and I try to change the channel it asks me which I want to stop. I'm on DirecTV though, so totally different hardware.

This is the way it was.

The tv with the box was tuned to Spike and recording the UFC prelims that were showing on Spike. No other recording going on. The tv without the box was being used to watch the local news and 2 minutes before the Spike show aired a prompt came up on the non box tv. It asked if I wanted to record the show on Spike. I chose yes and it proceeded to tune that tv onto Spike. Trying to change the channel away brought up a prompt saying the recording would be cancelled if I changed the channel. Sounds like I'm missing a tuner.

If there is no recording can you watch 2 different shows? Maybe their software sucks and doesn't automatically manage the tuners. You'll probably have to check AVS to find out what the problem is.

I think I got it dialed in. There's a setting buried and worded really dumb but the tv without the box was set as the default recording set. Dumb.

How do you record something without a box? That's confusing as hell.

Think of it this way. The box has two tuners. Both can be used for the tv it's hooked up to like usual, or split. One tuner for the tv it's hooked up to and one for the hardware-less tv. The box has an antenna that allows the 2nd remote/tv to function just like it has hardware hooked up to it.
