Just like everything else that ever got big on the internet, Twitter brings a service useful only for a few, to all people and all people feel obligated, and indeed empowered in using it. Everyone does not need their own blog, everyone doesn't need their own TV station, biography, radio station, or (in twitters case) news feed. Now you and your high school friends can pretend to be like the NYSE and give everyone following you up-to-the minute details on your day.
It shouldn't be surprising that this is popular. Facebook, all the social-networking bullshit before it, YouTube and more. Just accept that little to nothing on any of those things is important, and is worth nothing until you can find a way for it to positively benefit you.
