Phaneuf traded to Leafs - no details yet.
Calgary got smoked in that deal. Burke +1
The Calgary Flames have traded defenceman Dion Phaneuf, forward Fredrik Sjostrom, and prospect defenceman Keith Aulie to the Toronto Maple Leafs in exchange for forwards Matt Stajan, Niklas Hagman, Jamal Mayers and defenceman Ian White.
Phaneuf has been over rated for 2 years. White has been seriously under rated, though I wouldn't say he's as good as Phaneuf is supposed to be. So Phaneuf gets to be the next over rated savior to dissappoint in Toronto.
I will say this is probably the deal that gets Sutter fired as GM though, as even if Phaneuf isn't any good in Toronto as I expect, Flames fans remember another Toronto Calgary trade that didn't go so well for the Flames.
That's awesome. Fuck you, Quitters. Brent can't even make the playoffs when Darryl can't hand him a team that is too good to miss them.
The Toronto Maple Leafs have acquired veteran goaltender Jean-Sebastien from the Anaheim Ducks in exchange for netminder Vesa Toskala and veteran forward Jason Blake.
Well I'll give blowhard this much, at least he's doing something.
I'm so happy right now, I can't stop celebrating.
Phaneuf and Aulie? Giguere? Never having to see Toskala and Blake in a Leafs uniform ever again?
JOY
Love Burke. Was in full support of everything he's done, including the FA signings and the Kessel deal, except the only time I've been down on him was recently for not dumping Toskalol. It was unacceptable and costing the team dearly, but thankfully it's finally over and all for the better now.
This is amazing.
Gigeure is nothing wtihout Pronger and Neidermeyer in front of him, so don't go assuming you're going to win the cup with him. He lost his job to Jonas Hillier for fuck sake.
I do however know the joy of dumping a player you can't stand, even if it means picking up another whom you will eventually not be able to stand either.
That the Leafs were able to dump 4, all in one day, is really quite remarkable.
I hear you on Giguere. Not expecting him to stand on his head and play in his top form, just want a decent guy to pair with the Monster, to be consistent and muster a .900 or better save percentage. That would be a big step up from the last couple of years for the Leafs.
(Funny side note: if Hiller goes down in Anaheim, their go-to guys are Toskala and Justin Pogge. That worked out really well for the Leafs!)
Burke said he's not done at the presser and I believe that. Other guys who I think will be leaving soon:
Alexei Ponikarovsky - I think will definitely be traded by/at the deadline as he will be a valuable Top 6 winger to a playoff team. Similar to Antropov to the Rangers last year. Best guess is Pittsburgh, they've been scouting him a bit this season and are in need of wingers. Second guess would be Nashville, I think they've been interested in him much longer (rumor last deadline that they dealt for him). Probably for a 2nd round pick or a prospect.
Garnet Exelby - Hard-hitting defenseman (limited to just that) with an expiring contract, I think someone takes XLB. I'll be happy with a 7th round pick, maybe the Leafs get a 5th.
Jeff Finger - harder to move than Jason Blake. Best chance is to dump him in the minors. I kind of feel sorry for him because it's not his fault someone decided to overpay for him (definitely not one of Cliff Fletcher's best moves), but $3.5M per year? Forget that noise.
And then comes the offseason:
Tomas Kaberle - if the Leafs miss the playoffs (fair to say that's going to happen!) then his NTC is lifted this offseason. Burke is definitely going to trade him imo, probably aiming to pick up a top-flight forward (player or prospect) as part of the return.
Jokinen and Prust to the Rangers for Higgins and Kotalik.

Mixed feelings about this if true.
Is that even possible cap-wise?
edit: I guess the Rangers were overpaying so badly for those two that it might actually work.
