Hmmm. I hate how it looks, but I like the original, soooooo yeah. Hope it plays well.
(maybe I just need to start making art assets for indy games if I hate modern polygon/illustrator stuff so much, fuck it...)
You could probably just play the 8 bajillion old games you haven't already played, too!Quote:

What, on the Master System? Perhaps the Turbo Graphics Seventeen? No, those suck too. Potential > old shit. Hmmm thinkin' thinkin'. Back in a few months.
Oh snap. Axel became the new rocket knight after Sparkster left.
Plus, from the interview: "Whenever we have an animation that seems too cocky for Sparkster, we just give it to Axel."
Sweet.
C'mon graphics...don't suck too bad.
I would have paid $10 for just a re-release of the Genesis game on Xbox Live Arcade. This update doesn't look as good and will probably be $15, so pass.
The art looks fine to me. You motherfuckers just want to bitch about anything.
lol at the most important part of the announcement:

Publisher: Konami
Developer: Climax
lol wtf
I'm not singling out anyone here but I'm always amazed when people want new 2d games so badly yet haven't explored beyond the NES/Genesis/SNES/or whatever they grew up with.
I agree with Yeller that the new Rocket Knight isn't exactly good looking. I'm excited to see how it plays, though.
Game was fun to play before, if it's updated with similar play and "not to your standard" graphics I'll still enjoy it. Too much hate for the good remakes these days.
They're video games. They change over time. It happens. Get fucking used to it.
It kind of looks like a Little Big Planet mod.
The issue isn't some shift in technology or the fact that it's 2.5D, it's the poor art direction. I find bad art direction a lot harder to forgive than, say, iffy 3D due to old hardware limitations.
However, if there's ever an industry-wide move to make every video game look like Turtles in Time Re-Shelled, I will indeed get used to it! I will get used to buying fewer video games. :chick:
Um, no.Quote:
Rocket Knight
This makes me happy. I always liked the character and found it a shame he got buried at the end of the mascot-glut.
Also, I like the story they came up with- he retired for 15 years while his old enemies integrated into his former kingdom. He should sport an Old Man Snake 'stache.
James
You make a vaild point, and while I personally don't mind the new art direction, I understand the unhappiness with going from 2D to WhateverD. It's a classic game getting redone in our ZOMG3D world, so you will either love it (cuz you never played it) or hate it (cuz it doesn't look like it used to). Still, if the gameplay holds up, that iron clad mammal can look as stupid as can be and I'll enjoy it. The main word there being IF.
What art direction? Looks like they just slapped shit together in that game.
Who are you to talk about art you cock smoker?!?!?!
Reminds me more of the sidescrolling levels in Crash Bandicoot than it does RKA or Sparkster.
With great regret, I must inform you that I am your father, Pineapple.
No father would ever regret having me! I POST ON THE INTERNET!
I just checked out the screenshots... that shit is hideously ugly, it'd take at least a twelve pack for me even to consider taking it home and fucking it.
This is what I was thinking as well - hell, I'd even pay a separate $5 to buy Rocket Knight Adventures as a Sega Vintage XBLA title.
On the note of this game, though - hearing the constant bitching about the graphics is getting so incredibly old. It was old back when people were bitching about the backgrounds of New Super Mario Bros DS, tiresome when people were comparing a single cropped screen shot of the new Earthworm Jim, and annoying now that they're pointing at this and yelling, "UNCLEAN!" Give it a rest.
Yeah, pretty much. I think the backlash on TNL lately has been hilarious. Never seen people so proud to demonstrate that they have no taste or interest in aesthetics.
NSMB is still an eyesore. Seek out an optometrist today!
Not that I care because game play reigns supreme but this does in fact look like shit. You would think that XBLA/PSN/WiiWare would be seeing a lot of these remakes done with nicer 2D graphics. I have nothing to base this off of but I guess it is more cost effective to make these games in shitty 2.5D instead of beautiful 2D.
Here's a crazy idea: they could try making them in good 2.5D!
Yeah, I can see original stuff coming out like shit, but they have two good-looking games they can use as reference here. Instead it appears they threw those in the dustbin and picked up Kya: Dark Lineage for guidance instead.
I don't know, Klonoa 2 is still really pretty!
oh yeah, it's ugly to be sure but at least we're not talking about a Rocket Knight remake - it's a real sequel! So as much as I want the graphics to be better, I think new game + under represented genre = a purchase as long as the gameplay is up to snuff.
But yeah, ugly as all hell.
the kim possible ps2 game was pretty slick too
oh, Klonoa on Wii is good! Also Bionic Commando: Rearmed (seriously, for what it wanted to accomplish it did a great job visually).
This game honestly LOOKS like dogshit. Complete garbage. The old game kills this graphically in every way. WTF is wrong with Konami (TMNT re-shelled anyone?). Why is everyone so afraid of 2d? I'll probably answer my own question: Recently, I played Metal Slug 3 with a cousin of mine, who is in high school, and he thought it had "horrible graphics". And this is coming from a kid who plays Counter Strike ONE all day. What a dipshit and I guess that speaks for alot of today's gamers.
:icepick: I am not impressed with the art here. It's the character models that really bug me - I'd rather see this use 2D sprites like Strider 2 does.
It looks okay to me. I am not buying it though.
I'll be buying it, at least for review purposes, but that art does not impress me AT ALL.
Bleh.
Yeah, I had the same reaction.
It looks bad, but it looks like it may at least play well. If they have some good level design this might be fun. If not, I'll pretend it never happened and just play the original Genesis game.
I thought the same thing. It looks like it plays pretty well but it looks even worse in motion. If it's fun to play I'll buy it.
Ugh! It looks like shit. Hope it doesn't play like it...
It does look like shit in motion.
Kind of off topic but why has TNL ignored Trine? It's a 2.5d platformer that looks good and plays well.
Not on 360? I like it too.
We talked about Trine a bit. It's a good game, but not one I'll still be talking about in a year.
Did Trine finally come out on PSN? It's been so long I've forgotten to look. I'd check now but the shiny distraction of Demon's Souls would get in the way. Maybe there'll be time to play it this spring.
James
I'm still waiting for the goddamn US PSN release of Trine. It's taking way too fucking long.
I've grown out of these types of games a long time ago. But man, does that look like ass.
I don't like really like these kinds of games anymore? I once liked them, and I no longer care to play them. Hence, I've grown out of them.
[obama voice]Let me be perfectly clear. I am in no way, shape, or form, talking down to anyone who likes 2D mascot platformers. They are a staple of the video game industry. Always have been, always will.[/obama]
I should rip you for thinking that one can outgrow a 2d platformer, but that Obama was awesome.
Well delivered bad ideas... are we sure JeffmcC isn't Obama?
Tomba was awesome.
looks better

Definitely looks better. I want to play it now!
Some of those graphical effects look kinda amateurish, though. Look at that grass!
All of those graphics look amateurish, even if Sparkster's portrait no longer looks retarded. It's still revolting. While it looks like they could be getting a handle on the gameplay, nothing in that video grabbed me. Until they show me why I should want to play it over the originals I'm not going to care.
I kind of want to play that now. I just don't want to look at it.
It is looking better now, I'll probably grab it. The gameplay reminds me of Megaman X4 playing as Zero since it looks like Sparkster can dash at will instead of holding down the attack button to charge (either that or the player was just really good.)
That looks much better. I will buy this now!
I also liked the orchestrated theme from stage 1 of the first game.
Where are you guys getting the "it looks better" from? It still looks hideous.
oh it still looks ugly in design, but it looks fun in motion
It still could look better than this. I actually like the 16-bit versions' style more.
This is available for preorder on Steam. It's $11.99 now or $14.99 when it unlocks on Wednesday.
I really like this so far. And it made me discover a use for 2.5D... finally! When they do 2.5D on the PC, it then works with 3D Vision, which makes an ultra-parallax effect come to life. As long as there is a PC version, I would now support 2.5D for the first time ever.
Anything else you can add? Levels? Bosses? Does it play exactly like the old games? etc.. I have 1240 ms points left so more impressions especially if you finish the game would be helpful.
Buy it on Steam. Fuck XBLA. We need to support Steam releases of games like this.
It's been forever since I have played the older games, and I have only played one level so far. I'll post more when I get further in.
Steam can lick my ass.
That's great. I can play my Steam games from 2003ish still. When MS pulls the plug on the 360, those games are likely toast. In most cases, you're paying more for less with the consoles. I saved 20% on this game and got a more flexible version, for example.
Regardless of platform, it's nice to hear you're enjoying it, Yoshi. Going to give the 360 version a go in a few.
Just played through, I'm assuming, the majority of this game in one sitting. Although it's been more than 15 years since I played the original on Genesis, this feels like the game I remember and is a lot of fun. The length seems to be about the same as the average Genesis game as well, but I do like that it has Par times for each of the stages and most of the achievements are tailored to give the game more replay rather than throwing you a biscuit for playing normally.
I do believe they are similar, but I suspect there has to be more to them, since they even require special 120Hz monitors or DLP HDTVs.
If I were to take a guess, I'd say that it only needs 120 Hz to keep the frame rate up. If it is the same shutter deal as the Master System, you need two complete screen draws to make one frame of animation. So 60 fps would only be possible on a 120 Hz monitor.
I guess that means the Master System 3D was locked to 30 FPS...
And typing "frames per second" has thrown my brain into a tangle of a tangent concerning the word "per". Help me out so I can think normally again.
"Per" means "divided by", right? Frames per second = (frames/seconds)
Miles per hour = (miles/hour)
etc.
"cent" means 1/100 of something, right? There are 100 cents in a dollar. There are 100 centimeters in a meter. etc.
So the word "percent" is all fucked up. It should either be "perhundred" or just plain "cent".
How is there any logic in phrasing it as "percent"?
As the word is written, 80 percent should be 80/(1/100) = 8000
But it is not. 80 percent is 0.80 = 80/100 = 80 per hundred.
Mind assplode.
cent can be 1/100 like in the un-American system, but it can also be 100, like century.
Every dictionary teh internets can show me says that cent derived from a Latin word that means "hundred", but none of the current meanings indicate anything other than 1/100.
So somebody fucked up a Latin adaptation hundreds of years ago. Did the centipede/century faction screw up or did the cent (coin, musical interval) faction screw up? I don't know.
But until I do, "percent" will not sit well with me. Especially since all modern definitions of "cent" are a form of 1/100.
Also, talk about Rocket Knight.
Bring this to like the tech board or something.
I tried the demo. It's okay but it makes me want to hook up my Genesis to play the original more than making we want to buy it. It just doesn't have the same appeal and has more of a fan-made vibe than I would expect from an official new game in the series. It's obviously much uglier than the old handdrawn games but the level design seems amateur-ish as well.
That's the same feeling I get from the Sonic 4 videos I've seen.
I find it unbelievable that 2D games with 3D graphics have not improved visually in sixteen years. In fact, a game like Donkey Kong Country looks, IMO, much better! When one sees how gorgeous a modern hand-drawn, 2D game can be, it boggles my mind that they use cheap-looking polygons for new editions of old series.
I still want to play it, though.
How long have you and Steam been dating?
Longer than your mother and I. Don't be mad, son ;)
