Shtick?
Your mom is contrived and often used.
She loves it btw.
I shtick her regularly.
I don't like the way these Wii games use some sort of default Wii message screen to relay information. Look at something like Assassin's Creed 2 and it has a super-stylish and sharp UI; back in Mario land we're using giant, ugly, system default windows.
The reward for getting everything in NSMBW? A giant, fat text box telling you, quite literally "You have now completed everything in NSMBW."
That's a giant, fat text box more than NSMB DS gave you. This game isn't exactly oozing with charisma, but it's a huge step up from the DS prequel's Banal Gray Rectangle take on UIs.

Gross.
boo, spoiler!
What ever happened to finishing everything for the sake of doing it (not that I'm championing the idea)? I remember being a kid and trying to finish every level in SMB3 (even the lame ones), or 100% Super Metroid in one sitting. Granted I don't have the time or feeling of dedication to do that with games anymore, but for those who do 100% a game and then get all upset over no super-bonus...what gives?
I dunno. I never asked for it until they started giving it to us. We've come to expect fall season/Mario masks and Sparkly Triple Jump. A beige Congratulations text box with all the grace and aestheticism of an IGN pop-up ad for Axe Body Spray simply will not do!
Also, looking at that NSMB DS screenshot again, what's worse than all the gray is that deplorable '80s-looking not-quite-pastel-not-quite-neon streak behind SCORE and the lives count. It can only be described as Trapperkeeper Teal.
I was pretty happy to just get 100%. I went into the game knowing that, no matter how awesome I was going to be at it, I'd never have an achievement, trophey, avatar item or Home clothing to show for it...
Just rented NSMB for Wii. One player is pretty good, but multiplayer is terrible. It could've been fixed too by using a button to activate intercharacter action (jumping on top of other characters, pushing each other, etc.) Accidentally jumping when another player does and being pushed into spikes or a hole is beyond annoying.
So I'm playing SMB, SMB3, and SMW in tandem with NSMBWii as I go for 100%. It really is up with its older brothers in terms of fun and challenge balancing out.
SMB - Probably the toughest in terms of overall level structure. There's enough holy shit moments interspersed through taxing gameplay that there's few stages that fit as filler material.
SMB3 - The levels are waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay shorter than I remember! Meaning even in a tough level, it's usually just a few tough jumps or circumstances that once understood, can be plowed through. Still World 8 has probably the hardest levels in any Mario game.
SMW - Easiest in the sense that this is where the series started putting secret exits, keys, etc etc as an emphasis over a straight platformer challenge. A big game and can be a workout in some levels, but I think NSMBWii is little more visceral in its challenge than World.
I still don't know where I'd put MarioWii in terms of difficulty. Some stages are a total cakewalk, while others are right up there with 1 and 3. Granted I have like 80-something lives but I've also died way more than I can keep track of. As for multiplayer, I think it changes the focus of the game. On solo I'm in old-school platform perfectionist mode. In multi-play if I lighten up on that attitude it's a blast.
I've been playing old 2D Marios lately as well. SMB1's difficulty is way unbalanced compared to its successors. If you have a fire flower you're basically God, but once you take one hit it can mark the difference between a cakewalk and a struggle. Sometimes I think that that Hammer Bro placed right before the final Bowser is a bigger dick move than anything in Lost Levels. At least the final castle in the 2nd game had two secret mushroom/flower blocks.
SMB3's stages seemed short to me on a recent play as well, but then I realized that none of them have checkpoints so it kind of balances out. It's still a crazy long game if you actually try to beat every stage in one sitting, and even though most of the stages are short they usually either have some significant secrets or are at least light on filler.
That article is horrible.
This has already sold 10 million copies, BTW.
I finally got around to playing this multiplayer the other day. It was a laugh riot. Good times.
I really, really hope nobody payed that dude to write.
JESUS FUCK JUST SPIT IT OUT ALREADY!!!!Quote:

The game is good, but it's not $300 good. Just go Play Mario 3 if you really need it, because it's almost the same game.
But Galaxy sold well for itself - not the gangbusters SMB Wii is doing, but still very respectable. It's not like it pulled Dead Space Extraction sales.
That said, I don't get this "80% derivative" crap. All the levels felt really new compared to older Mario games. Mario DS can't hold a light to this, even if they share the same music and art style. Saying it's 80% derivative sets the standard thus - Modern Warfare 2 is 99% derivative! I mean, you shoot shit along a predetermined flight path with guns! And the bad guys are the generi-terrorist-Russian-commies! Derivative.
Granted both are a lot of fun! I don't care how derivative they are - my enjoyment derives not from originality - I just get sick of these nonsensical value judgments tossed around. As if because you cannot enjoy something enjoyable, you must justify your curmudgeonly attitude by yelping "derivative!" and calling it a day.
Why? They're working on the less popular Galaxy. If NSMB becomes the torch bearer for the franchise over the 3D Marios, wouldn't that free EAD up?Quote:

The game was fantastic. My only real gripe was not being able to use the classic controller and having to waggle for the hat copter. Besides that everything about it was great. I'll take 10 NSMB Wii games before I take another Super Mario Galaxy.
I think Galaxy is pretty brilliant, myself. Too easy of course but that might actually be fixed by Galaxy 2! God bless the Super Guide.
I thought EAD Tokyo did make NSMB Wii because various sites list them as the developer. I haven’t beat the game yet and seen the end credits so maybe they’re wrong and it was made by Tezuka’s team that did the DS game. Either way, I loved Jungle Beat and Galaxy, and would love to see EAD Tokyo make a new franchise.
According to wiki, EAD 4 (same team that did the DS one) did NSMBW.
It's slightly offensive that anyone could mistake a game as stylistically bankrupt as NSMBW as coming out of EAD Tokyo.
I didn't, I really hated the small planet design. It is the only Mario game that I never bothered finishing. Don't get me wrong, I think it's better than Sunshine but at least Sunshine had full sized worlds/areas. Running around a globe bored me so much I stopped playing it.
I thought the linear planetoid design made it by far the closest a 3D Mario has come to a point-to-point sidescroller. The exploration bullshit in the other two 3D games doesn't interest me at all.
Mario Galaxy is hands-down the best 3D Mario game ever, by a good amount. I loved every second of it and went back to 100% it again with Luigi.
No, I do know what you mean - but it's still over-exaggerating something for the sake of. I just took that metric and applied it to another game to show so.
The way I look at it, derivative or not, I'll take a game I like over a game I don't. that means I can have my cake AND eat it too - I can like Modern Warfare 2, NSMBWii, Dragon Age AND sleep soundly at night without thinking I committed some gamer's sin by allowing 'derivative' games into my home.
See? If you can over exaggerate so can I. It's fun!
'Splosion Man has broken online play. NSMB Wii has no online play. Tough call.
Oh it depends. I didn't have any problems playing 'Splosion Man with people living somewhat near me over the net, but I hear if you went long distances it was broken then.
Yes, Mario's small planets were shitty. Overrated game.
I bought and played 'Splosion Man and was quickly bored. The art style just didn't do it for me, and the gameplay didn't interest me all that much.
I liked NSMBW very much but was disappointed at just how much of the DS game they rehashed. I'd give Galaxy props over it just on originality alone, and that's saying something for this franchise.
I dig this game. The 3rd Gold Coin on world 7-Ghost was a bitch, though. +1.
