I just overwrote an article I just finished writing like a fucking retard. I haven't shut off the PC yet, is there any way to restore it? I don't think the chances are good, but I figured that I'd ask here before giving up.
The article I overwrote was saved on Wordpad and I'm running XP. Fuck, I hope something can be done. :(
What about this? I don't know if it's free... but the site does feature a shoeless girl with a computer monitor mounted on her back, if that counts for anything.
That just finds deleted data, not overwritten. I'd say there would be some hope if you had been using something like Word or OO, but I doubt WP keeps any temporary files or prior states, you might try to see if hitting "undo" a bunch helps.
Thanks for the suggestion Josh, but I don't know if that'll help. I didn't delete the file, I overwrote it. I just need to restore its previous state, which may or may not be trickier.
Doing a system restore wouldn't help, would it?
Tracer, "undo" woundn't help. I overwrote the file while it was closed.

I've learned from past mistakes, and I save anything that I'm working on multiple times throughout the course of working on it with a different name each time.
You may want to adopt this philosophy.
I think system restore just restores system critical files in the last known stable state. Your text is not likely to be included in what was saved in that back up. I'd keep hope up, if only small, but I don't have any other answers for you. Maybe cka is still up and about.
rummage through %APPDATA%\..\Local Settings\Temp, and see if maybe your editor has a copy stored in there

Luckily I remembered the best paragraph of the article word-for-word and re-typed it. I'm going to bed and will just re-build around that in the morning. *sigh*
This sucks. Not much you can do, unfortunately.
In retrospect, it's all for the best. I honestly wasn't that crazy about the article I wrote, aside from the one paragraph I mentioned above. I think it turned out much better this time around.
