RPG Battle 2000
The recent releases of Torchlight and Dragon Age: Origins made me think about the last time we had such comparatively close game releases from these two groups of developers.
2000 was pretty much the apex of the millenarian PC RPG renaissance. Though there were definitely notable releases beyond it (Arcanum, Wizardry 8, and Icewind Dale II all came out in 2001), this year had no fewer than ten other significant RPG releases, ranging from Icewind Dale to Avernum to Wizards & Warriors.
However, out of all of those RPGs, Baldur's Gate II and Diablo II are definitely the two standouts that continue to be regarded as the pinnacles of their respective styles of RPGs. So, which do you prefer?

Baldur's Gate II continued the series forward in grand fashion, retaining the excellent tactical pausable quasi-real-time combat and continuing to provide a lot of plot-related roleplaying. Plus, Minsc made a return!

Diablo II improved upon its predecessor (one of the games that, I'd argue, kicked off the whole RPG renaissance in the first place) in nearly every way. More interesting classes with more variety in character builds, far more variety in the environments to explore, and the same combination of visceral action and loot whoring that kept people coming back for more.
Remember, please only vote if you've actually played both, not that I expect anyone here to have somehow missed both of these titles.

FPS Battle: Doom 2 vs. Fallout 3

Not really fair battle - One is indepth rpg, where is another is action click based loot hunt with a decent story.
I will go with D2, never actually got to play Baldurs.

Back then I would have said Diablo II easily. My taste in RPGs has changed a lot in the past decade, though, and I enjoy the in-depth WRPGs much more than I used to. I suspect when I try BG2 again, it will be the one I like more.

what is this faggit shit?

It's videogames, brah. Where do you think you're posting?
-
never played BG2 but played icewind dale heavily. D2 for me but I'll refrain from voting til I play bg2.
-
I like them both but D2 is closer to my heart due to how much time I spent on it.

These games look brown and boring.

Damn, I don't know if I can cast a vote here. I love both of these games... I'd probably put them both in my top five. They're not really in the same genre, though. Apples, oranges, and equally tasty.
