So Bungie is joking with this generator defense mode they just released right? This is supposed to be their answer to Battlefield's rush mode? Its total shit in every way. Plus its only 3 on 3? Yeah, good one.
After seeing the full beta now, Invasion is really the only mode new enough to check out and even it still holds back too much. They could have really pushed things much further and crazier in that mode. Everything else is just deja vu.
I blame everything on Bungie/Microsoft being too cheap to go for dedicated servers and sticking with the same 16 max (usually less) player count. I wanted epic. Not 8 v 8.
Firefight mode in Halo Reach has matchmaking and customisation.
Fantastic.Quote:
Bungie developers at a Microsoft E3 2010 event tonight that unveiled Firefight said that fan feedback on ODST played a crucial part in redesigning the mode, and were happy to report that one of the major requests from players--full matchmaking support--would be available for Firefight in Reach. It will also make use of the new matchmaking features planned for the upcoming Halo prequel, including active rosters and queue joining, and would be available either as four players via Xbox Live or locally via two-player split screen.
The other major change to the way Firefight works in Reach has to do with customisation--namely, that Bungie has added a tonne of options that players can tweak and change to their heart's content. The list of options that could be optimised is substantial, ranging from determining wave properties (what types of enemies attack, which skulls are active, and the tough foes they'll face in "boss" rounds), match duration (all the way up to infinite), weapon drops, core player stats (such as health, speed, jump, and so on), and even the ability to create custom skulls. Up to three skulls can be made for a match, with the skulls able to affect player or enemy traits.
The new Firefight will also feature some new game types--two that we played at the Microsoft event were generator defense and rocketfight. Generator defense may be familiar to those who took part in the recent Reach multiplayer beta (where it was revealed as Network Test1), and sees teams having to protect a series of generators from the Covenant. Rocketfight is exactly what it sounds--unlimited rockets against your enemies, and was a great mode to play (if more than a little chaotic).
Finally, our game play session tonight revealed a few new weapons and one new armor ability. The target locator allows you to select an enemy or location to "paint", which then sends a barrage of fire down upon it from orbiting ships, while the concussion rifle is a Covenant weapon that fires explosive bursts of plasma (which can easily chew through shields). The fuel rod gun was also quite beefy, shooting out projectiles with explosive results. As for armor, we saw the new drop shield, a prototype bubble shield found in the medic load out. Once deployed, the drop shield creates a barrier around the Spartan soldier which can take a limited amount of damage, as well as heal any fellow Spartans within its radius.
Interesting tidbit about the flying stage in Reach.
Also, you can choose the gender of your character, Noble Six, before you start playing. Bungie had recorded Noble Six's lines using a male and female voice actor. Nice touch.Quote:
The space battle was fun, and not that different from some of the other aerial sequences in Halo. Jarrard said this will be the only spacecraft battle in the campaign and hopes it will benefit from one of the game's lead designers having worked on Crimson Skies.
Newegg has this for $45 shipped for preorder (won't charge until it ships) for today.
No discount on Limited or Legendary though. :(
Because we used those more than once with Halo 3.
The limited does come with alot of cool stuff though. That book seems essiential for fans of the Halo story.
BTW Marvel is releasing a set of mini series comics detailing Master Chief's origins from boot camp on up, so basically the Fall of Reach novel. Yep, youll finally see what he looks like. Due out in the Fall.
