The 3d Movie Fad

I'm starting to notice that a larger and larger quantity of movies are being released in 3d. In the span of a few years its gone from an uncommon novelty, to being pretty damn common! My friends and I were discussing it, and the only conclusion that I could come to, was that it was the theaters' way of combating blu-ray, home theaters, piracy etc. As technology has progressed this last decade, it has become easier and cheaper to compete with the theater experience from your own couch. In order to draw people back into the theater, movies are given the 3d make-over to enrich the experience in a way that we can't watch in our own homes (as far as I know). Much the way people in the past went to theaters for superb picture and sound, will people in the future be drawn to the 3d and whatever new technology may arrive?

What do you guys think? Any ideas as to why 3d is becoming so prevalent?

Wait until you see all the 3D monitors/tv sets that are coming next year.

It's coming to games too, PS3 will have a firmware update to do it (of course you're going to need that new TV!)

I can't see it being more than a fad, there isn't a killer app for the tech yet.

It's odd that a 100 year old novelty would make such a sudden resurgance with no real new technology available since the 40s.

I think the main thing that happened is a kind of obvious one: marketing to kids. Before 3D was usually used for horror movies, and they missed the greatest novelty market out there.

Blame the HDTV market.

And from all accounts, Frog. If you watch Avatar in 3D ... Its not a novelty.

I saw Avatar in 3D. I can't say it was mindblowing, but I need to see it in 2D to be sure.

Anyway, 3D sucks. It's a lame gimmick that tacks on at least 6 bucks to the ticket price and barely adds anything to the experience and sometimes even takes away from it (in terms of picture quality).

Theaters were floundering a bit before 3D, even if movies were breaking all kinds of records, they weren't doing as much business as needed to sustain grown in the market. Also, it's a good way to combat pirates (coughs,) it ensures blurry quality cams, and no R5 release will ever be 3D. It's not a bad move from a marketting standpoint, and it's the way everything is going.

Stereoscopic trickery of any kind doesn't work on me, so I couldn't care less, but I've heard a lot of good things from friends.
I don't know much about the 3D movies, other than the fact that they use polarization to separate the two images.
A friend of mine uses 3D shutter glasses for PC games, and he swears by it.
Of course, he had to use CRT monitors up until a few weeks ago since there are only a few LCD monitors that can actually accept 120Hz signal at native resolution.
Also, it's possible to get good quality cams of 3D movies with the right filter, but I don't understand why anyone bothers with cams to begin with.
