There are always tools everywhere. It's just that most people don't recognize when they're being tools and when a flood of different people show interest in something they become shocked that those people aren't like them. It's kind of like the "90% of everything sucks" comment that gets thrown around, people who do that tend to include what they like in the quality 10%.
I don't remember where I saw it unfortunately, but the average attach rate for most of the major consoles going back to the NES was something like 7-12 games per system. It's an issue for 3rd parties more than anything but the heavy buyer is an anomaly and the games that rely on them are the ones that lost their mainstream appeal and rely on an established fanbase like ports of arcade shooters. Interest in any genre can decline regardless of quality and when that happens the people who will be in trouble are the ones who excel only in that genre or rely on the lingering fanbase of a single franchise. You can run off a list of quality developers that disappeared or declined severely with time as easily as anyone else here. Nintendo probably can't keep the momentum they have now but because they have so many successful games in so many different genres, they're probably in the best position they can reasonably be in.Quote:
