Welfare Is Not a Pedestal

Okay, so we're broke as fuck. I haven't been able to get full-time work for very nearly a year, and I'm making minimum wage at my often only shift at Gamestop each week. I barely make enough to pay for groceries. Rachel is making $30,000/yr. Our rent is nearly $1,000/mo. The kids are insured, and we have a car. We have no one in my family nearby to help us out, and her family is just unreliable (read: alcoholic.) This is all just to give you an idea of where we are financially. We're barely getting by, but we are trying to live and work honestly.

Adri has a friend lives in the neighborhood across the street (it's one of the ghettos in town) and we often do playdates with her. Her mother works sparingly, often not at all, as a teachers aid. She gets section 8 (not the game, the thing that pays for your rent) she gets food stamps, and basically any other bit of assistance she can get. She also gets child support, and has family nearby to help her out. So you think she'd be going to school or getting some training or something, right?

Where's all this leading?

A week back, Rachel goes to pick up the kids, and this woman tries to convince her to leave me, stop working, and move into that neighborhood and apply for welfare. She gives her a full tour of the apt. and show's her all the stuff she can afford. Rachel quotes her as "ALL this for only $82/mo." in reference to her rent.

So come Christmas, we again manage to pull it off on a slim budget, Adri gets a ton of those damn Pet Shop things, and I comment to her that she has far too many now, and she said, "I don't have as many as (friend)" and Rachel says "Well (friend)'s mom is on welfare, so she can afford more."

Seriously, lazy people are being rewarded for doing nothing, and because we both work, we get shit, where the fuck is the justice in that? When I lost my job, I lost the one bit of assistance we did get with after school daycare, and because we can't that, I can't work past 2 PM, or before 5:30 PM, so I can't get work anyhow.

All I'm saying is let the lazy shits go homeless, and use welfare as a hand up, not a pedestal. Where is the reward for those that are trying, and are giving back, when they can just get pampered and cared for well into retirement by doing nothing?

Sorry to hear it, but in this case the ends justify the means. If nobody is going to give you a break make your own.

That's not how it works. If it were I wouldn't be able to waltz in to work at 10 o'clock, have my bosses tell me I'm doing a great job, and leave at 4:30 like I do. I don't care that their shitty apartment is paid for any that they're morons. And aren't there limits on how long this woman can be on welfare anyway? You know, I think that welfare programs are a major unspoken issue in America. Conservatives constantly moan about government being too large, and when you ask many of them what sort of programs could be cut the first thing that comes up is typically WELFARE! Even though, I mean it isn't even called welfare anymore.

It really is sickening. During the Copenhagen conference, Hillary Clinton pledged up to $100 billion a year to third world countries. While I'm sure that made her feel all warm and fuzzy, I couldn't help but imagine how many homes that $100 billion a year could rescue from foreclosure. $100 billion also pays for a lot of surgeries, and even more prescription drugs for the elderly.

Best of all, $100 billion buys you a kick-ass space program.

I'm simply relating through personal experience an example of our government wasting money that could be better spent on something like health care, free state college, or schools in general. I don't envy this bitch, I am simply disgusted by it. This is her plateau in life, being a social leech, and our govt. is rewarding that. This is where your tax money is going, as I do still pay taxes, I have the right to be a little angry about this. It's not just that the govt. allows it too, but her attitude about it.

Also, I choose not to interfere in my children's relationship with other kids just because of my relationship with their parents, to do otherwise would be entirely selfish. It isn't the kids fault her mother is shiftless.

We got our own welfare on the street. It's called shoppin' that ass.

I can only assume that my last job, which looks great on paper, are being assholes about my reference, which makes sense given how negative the atmosphere in that place is. But all of this is completely counter to my point, that we as a country have decided that once you start working, the job of govt. to is over, whereas those who simply refuse to do for themselves are allowed to continually bleed the system for every penny they can get without any form of retribution.

I remember hearing about the Welfare to Work initiative adopted in Massachusetts, and the numbers were all impressive and such, and it was lauded nationally for it, but then you see the actual result, being the people and not just raw numbers, which was poor unskilled workers being made to take two minimum wage jobs, working all day only coming home to sleep, leaving their children to raise themselves, which in turn leads to increased teen pregnancy, gang activity, and any number of vices that could be solved by simply having parent present at home. The system is broken, and we've grown too used to it that we choose to pick at petty details over how the argument is presented (read: this thread,) rather than hold the govt, which has allowed this to happen, because it's easier.

I just don't get why I'm the only one here bothered by this, but then, maybe that's why shit its as bad as it is, we do get the government we deserve. I couldn't give a fuck about your sympathy, I want your damn vitriol.

How the fuck does that make sense? Cali has it, and it sure as shit isn't keeping people down. I just want a free option for those that truly want it. Make community colleges free, nobody really wants to go to those anyhow. I also don't get the American obsession with accruing debt, it's fucking obscene.

Howabout lower taxes because people like this won't be stealing your money, doesn't that sound pretty good for you? I have no problem assisting those who truly need it, especially if they simply can't work, or can't make ends meet even when they are, but I want the welfare system to be a hand up more than a hand out, and certainly not a permanent one at that.

Also, it's a pretty shit way of thinking, to say that some problem is so great that you can't do a thing about it, because this one really isn't that tough to solve. That's the attitude that prevents stuff from getting done. Solutions for this are just far too simple, but even suggesting personal responsibility in today's America is just as bad as treason to some. My neighbor's at the dorm back in CC were drug dealers. They had been there for 3 years for "automotive repair." Man they had an awesome thing going. The state was paying for them to go and they raked in all the money from stupid college students.

They were dicks though. Bouncing basket balls off the wall while I was trying to take a nap.

All I know is that EVERY LAST FUCKING FOREIGN person I've talked to at college has told me that is why they are in the US for college. It isn't because OMG America is awesome, but because they can get a good education while the colleges back home won't accept them because their grades were not awesome enough.

I'd like to see what the rejection level is for Cali colleges that are paid for by the state. Is it all state colleges or just a couple? And doesn't Cali have an obscene amount of debt?

As far as college goes, just make the lower rung of college free (community,) just so someone can go in they want, the rest can charge as obscene an amount as they want.

I know someone that works with Section 8 housing. Folks live in San Francisco for as little as $25 a month, in apartments larger and nicer than mine, and complain wayyy more than I'd ever dare. I'm sure there are people that are in genuine need of help, but I can help but feel that it's a tiny minority. Massively subsidized rent should get you through a few hard months, or maybe let you relocate to a cheaper city by the summer, right? No, they've lived there for 30 years, able-bodied.

They're out there, but unless your grades/test scores are really good, you usually need to be an athlete or a minority to find a place to give you a free ride.

I went to a place that used to be an all-girls school, so I was able to get a nice scholarship offer as a "minority" even though my grades and test scores were merely OK.

I graduated high school with a 4.0, no one offered me free college.

The bottom part of the graph is the yearly income of someone working 40 hours a week at a minimum wage salary.

Given the data, the rational choice for people stuck between either a minimum wage job or welfare is to go on welfare.

Welfare doesn’t get you above the poverty line, either, and you’re still likely to be miserable, but at least you’ll be miserable while staying at home instead of miserable while flipping burgers.

You can't blame people for their rational; blame the system that allows welfare to become the rational choice.

Get the fuck over yourself, some people don't deserve kids, and I'm pretty sure this is one really good example of that. It's absolutely the American way to go to a job you hate for a shit wage to provide for your kids and build for them a better life than you had in the hopes that they will, someday, do the same. No, not really, but I do honestly think that there needs to be a serious reform in how this stuff works. I'd support a welfare plan that provides a two year degree in programs that gets people skill that they can use to find real work that isn't a McJob. That has a built in time limit for those that are able bodied enough to do real work, and assists in job placement. If you choose not to work after all that, FUCK YOU and your fucking kids.

The more apt approach is "personally irresponsible" folk. They are likely to teach their kids to also be irresponsible, not through direct lesson, but through example.

And the real challenge is that this option is so tempting, that even if you teach your kid otherwise, it can still permeate into their lives. You may bring them up to work hard, believe in being accountable, etc. but all it takes is for someone else to show/convince them how much easier and prosperous it is to just let someone else pick up the slack...

My rent is 262, and I pay for everything. Cell phone+car insurance+internet+electric is around 170. Eh, every month I kind of wonder how it works out too. Maybe I make closer to 700.

Rent is crazy fucking cheap if you live in the wilderness. I share a place with 6 people and pay $550 a month for my end. And I consider it a pretty good deal.

Yeah, I share a two story apartment with one other girl and my rent is that low. She got the place a few years ago and her landlord never raised the rent.

There's a difference between feeding and raising. I can mail a check to feed and shelter a kid, but a good role model is a much harder thing, which is Shine's angle.

You'll have a tough time convincing me children don't deserve to be fed, clothed, and housed. I'm ok paying for that, and so are most people, and welfare is actually one of the more effective ways to get that done.

Protip: Start a cash only business so you never have to pay income tax again. Then laugh at welfare people in supermarket.

I know Cal States are technically free, meaning you don't pay tuition but campus "fees" to use facilities such as the library, whether or not you actually do. At CSULB out of state students had to pay tuition meaning an additional $1000 per semester.

I went to college for "free" (full paid tuition) and I'm still $20K in the hole afterward.

Ehhhhhhhh...yes and no.

While I agree there aren't many (any?) other institutions that take care of kids better per se, I don't see welfare as being effective. Only anecdotes, but I've heard enough stories of parents using their welfare to buy themselves better clothes, etc. while the kids still live "poor." They don't go hungry, mind you, but they don't benefit from what is essentially their compensation, because the parent circumvents it for their own luxuries.

I don't feel rich. I'm just glad I can at least make ends meet while going to school.
