Haha if me and Anth can do it with a bunch of my friends you most certainly can. Bring Toni and her b/f, he's a cool dude.
Hammered is an exaggeration but I was pretty buzzed. Also, your mother.
I was hammered off of 2 bottles of Immort Ale, a bottle of North Coast PranQster, and far too much gin.
I am paying for it today.
My sis is in labor and I got bored of the hours of waiting so went to grab a beer and found Ommegang Witte on tap. It's awesome on tap.
Went to grab 2 bottles out of a 4pack of Immort Ale and found a Shelter Pale Ale, the original brew.
Sounded interesting, bought it, opening now.
Is delicious and refreshing with almost no mouthfeel. Not much going on, but a great session beer and pretty affordable. I like it more than the 60 minute.
Glad you posted, I wanted you to let me know if you get some 120 Mins in your place to ship some over if it isn't too costly. Let me know since both me and Rich are waiting impatiently for a batch to be released.
What does no mouthfeel mean? It's not like saying something has no taste, it's like saying something has no consistency... it has to.
Exactly what it sounds like. It feels like you're drinking water in your mouth.
Quote:
You may believe that mouthfeel has little to do with the sensations of flavor. Flavor, however, is the mind’s interpretation of aroma, taste and the sense of touch, also known as mouthfeel. Anyone who has an aversion to a particular food due to mouthfeel (raw oysters or jello are common examples) understands this association to flavor.
Mouthfeel is the activation of your sense of touch as it relates to the body in beer, and the associated feel and texture of the liquid within your mouth and throat. This profile is caused by the residual proteins and dextrins in beer – the result of how much malt sugar has been converted into sugar. Proteins are unfermentable, so they are the primary contributor to mouthfeel. Hardness or softness of the water supply is also a contributing factor.
Characteristics of mouthfeel are described within a portion of the Meilgaard Beer Flavor Wheel, developed by Morton Meilgaard in the 1970’s. The attributes of alkalinity (detergent) and mouthcoating (creaminess) apply to taste alone. Other attributes are associated with taste and odor:
Metallic – a tinny or rusty characteristic, akin to sucking on nails or nickels.
Astringent – the mouthpuckering attribute that draws your inner cheeks inward, toward your tongue.
Powdery – a chalky or gritty feel.
Carbonation – a characteristic associated with bubbles dancing on your tongue, a gassy feature, or a flat type of feel.
Warming – an alcoholic or spicy attribute that fills your mouth and dissipates to the membranes lining your throat.
But wouldn't that just be a watery mouthfeel? Again, I don't think it's something you can have or not have, it's just a facet you can describe. It's like saying something has no appearance.
I would argue that water has a mouthfeel like everything else. I think you're using the word wrong. It's more akin to "appearance", where everything has it and you just describe it, than "taste" which can (colloquially at least) be said to be absent.
Read that again. I'm not saying it IS taste/appearance, I'm comparing the way the words are used.
I know what mouthfeel is, but I'm saying, in the same way it's incoherent to say "This has no appearance" because you find the appearance uninteresting, it's also wrong to say "This has no mouthfeel." Everything has an appearance, and everything has a mouthfeel. Everything has a temperature. It's just one of those things.
You're using it in the way you'd use taste; We can say something has "no taste". But I don't think you can use "mouthfeel" like that.
Anyway, this is way too much explaining for a point that wasn't even interesting enough for me to bring up until you said it multiple times.
No you can't. Even water has taste. But at the same time, you'd say that water has no taste because of how little taste is actually has. Much the same way you'd say it has no mouthfeel. It's there, and then it's not, and it feels just like water when it's in your mouth, but has no lingering feel.
The beer had the viscosity and thickness of water, or near to it, and little carbonation. This is like having no feel. It also makes it super easy to drink.
Right, which is why the first time I said that, I specified I meant colloquially, people talk that way. But you're the only person I've ever heard describe mouthfeel as absent, rather than just "thin," "watery," "light," or "flat." I don't think that's coherent usage of the term to say "no mouthfeel."
It's like saying something has "no temperature" when you mean "room temperature." It's just not how we talk.
Either the way, Shelter Pale Ale sucks.
Maybe breathing has no mouthfeel.
Haoh what is Palo Alto? If you're referring to Palo Santo then I will shed tears.
Most places that stock WWS have vintages so you don't have to cellar, really.
Yeah? I just think it's among their weakest brews, with Shelter Pale being clearly the worst of their crop (in big bottles, Theobroma is nothing special and Sahtea is simply awful). If I had to pick their top 5 (that I've had) I'd say, in no particular order: 90 Minute, Immort Ale, Pumpkin, 120 Minute, and Festina Peche - but I also prefer hoppy beers.
You can have your Punkin and I'll take Palo Santo.
Also - maybe this thread is now gay from the overuse of the word "mouthfeel".
I still don't know (AND DON'T CARE) what that means.
Your mom has a nice mouthfeel.
So yesterday Finch and I went up to Estes Park for him to deliver stuff for his work. This place isn't that exciting, it's a giant tourists trap essentially; but on the way in I noticed a sign that said "Estes Park Brewery." and while originally I had been planning to meet up with some friends at a new Microbrewery called Strange Brewery in Denver, we get delayed and it's not gonna happen anyways.
There are two interesting things in Estes Park that aren't just things you could buy at Target. The air tran that takes you up to the top of a mountain, and the Brewery. They let you have a free shot of each beer, in order from light to dark.
Raspberry Wheat, Wheat, Gold, Lager, IPA, Stout, Porter. Overall I liked all except the gold, even the IPA and I kind of hate IPAs. I'm not sure I'm good at giving detailed experiences of the beers, but when I drink them out of the bottles I'll give a full heads up on how they are.
I've decided it's time to start a journey to hit every brewery in Colorado. Or at least every single one within a 3 hour drive (Southwest and western Colorado has about 10, but it's a 7 hour drive so needs to be a part of a bigger trip).
I'm going to buy a glass from the Brewery from each one I visit that's outside of Denver. In Denver and maybe Boulder you can buy Half-Gallons that the breweries will fill up for like $8 with whichever of their beers you want.
Anyways that's my little story, I will post updates about the Breweries etc when I go to them and post my hauls.

Picked up a Burton Baton. I doubt I'll like it, but I'll give it a try.
Also, how do you determine the bottle date for the World Wide Stout? I don't want to pay and find out it's a 2010 and i'll have to wait!
It is printed right around the neck of the bottle.
Burton Baton is awesome btw... I look forward to being able to afford beer again soon!
I couldn't find it. I'll check again next time.
Am I the only one that finds St. Bernardus 12 very overrated? I mean I wouldn't complain if someone handed me one, but I don't think it's really a substitute for the high end Belgians, or even a Chimay.
There are other beers I'd drink instead, but its certainly not a bad beer.
Drinking a North Coast Pranqster. I love this stuff.
Yeah, maybe, but it's a pretty steep fall off from Rochefort 10, and there are a LOT of Quadrupel-ish Belgian Strong Ales I'd prefer to it as well.
Speaking of which, Pannepot is so god damn good.
I just downed 2/3 of a 22 oz Green Flash Barleywine.
Already kinda tipsy. $5.50 for 22 ounces of 11% aint too shabby. Not the best barleywine but still quite tasty.
Is $30/$52 good prices for a case of 60 min and 90 min each, respectively.
PS: So Rich, Expendables on Thursday?
Average prices. I'll let you know on Expendables-- I'm supposed to go out for dinner earlyish. Is the movie at midnight?
Picked up a World Wide Stout, bottled 11/14/08
Going to have to wait until tomorrow though, 18% beer before an interview = nothx.
I went there to find a Rochefort or Westvleteren, but the only Trappist they had was the Achel. Has anyone had the Achel? $6 is a lot to spend on a beer I knew nothing about.
Rich, I think it's at midnight but we'd have to buy tickets early.
Haoh, those are NJ prices but I go there about once every two weeks so it's not a hassle for me to carry a case home. I once carried a case of Sam Adams Winter Ale from Bethlehem, Penn. That was a fucking adventure.
I'm 75% for yes, then. I'll let you know tomorrow.
Achel is good, but one of the lesser true Trappists. No substitute for Rochefort. There are better ways to spend $6.
Also lol@ the fact that you thought you might find Westvleteren at a store in the US. You ain't getting that shit unless you have a friend in Belgium mail you some or you pay through the nose. There's no label so it's not even legal to retail here. Totally great beer, but even with that said it's not worth the effort when Rochefort is just as good and easier to find (although still kind of a rare treat by most definitions. I only know one place that stocks Rochefort 10 and they're sold out 90% of the time. I keep some on hand for special occasions because of this).
I just bought a bottle of Rochefort 10 today.
Thursday they are tapping 6 casks at Max's for their rare beer weekend. Anyone in?
I was looking for the Rochefort 8, mostly.
Rochefort 8 is much easier to find. And still very good. I know a place that has bottles from '06, too.
It is very boozy, and very hard to drink imo.
I hated it. It got me drunk, though, so not a complete waste.
Picked up a Trappist Achel 8° Brune.
Wondering if any of you guys have had, and enjoyed, the Gulden Draak and Nostradamus?
Never had either, I think?
Just had a "My Antonia" from DFH. It's exactly what you'd expect DFH to do with a pilsener. Italian malt and your mother's tears.
I can't find it anywhere. Want to pick me up one?
Grabbed the final bottle of Southern Tier Creme Brulee this weekend. Very vanilla, very different but good, but dear god I'm only ever going to drink this if I have at least 1 other person to share it with. Something about it made me slightly ill feeling.
This is a good trade... What are you up to this weekend?
I've decided Burton Baton looks better in a pint glass than any other beer ever. It's dark orange in the middle and tapers out to lighter orange on the edges. It's so cool.
Maybe tonight. Recommended time?
Just picked up a bomber of: http://beerinbaltimore.com/wp-conten...-2-223x300.png
What's the word on that Rich? I just recently heard good things about it.
I'ma open it in about 45 mins, I'll let ya know-- I've become pretty friendly with the guy at my store and he had a bottle for himself behind the counter and seemed pretty excited about it, too.
It smells like cookies and tastes like pumpkin pie. There's a little too much of something.. I can't quite put my finger on it.. almost too much of a sweetness/buttery flavor to it. It almost tastes like buttered popcorn jelly belly, which i hate... I don't know... it's sort of good, and it has spectacular reviews on beeradvocate, but I doubt I'll buy it again. It seems far more heavy on the pumpkin and less on the spices---pumpkin, brown sugar and cinnamon are really all I can even make out from it.
Also: you absolutely cannot find the 9% abv in here.
Ugh, as I keep drinking, I'm starting to actually dislike this beer. A lot. It's way too sweet. And I LOVE pumpkin beers.
Yeah I was a little skeptical. I don't usually go for fruity or food flavored beers. Southern Tiers Winter Lager is one of my favorites though, I highly recommend it.
If you like Buttered Popcorn flavored Jelly Belly OR pumpkin pie, I'd say go for it. I don't like either, but I generally love pumpkin beers. It's only $6.99, it's probably worth a go if you're interested. Mind you I also hated the Creme Brulee, which I found far too sweet as well.

This beer went from alright, to dislike, to absolutely worst beer I've ever had and every sip makes me want to puke.
I just poured half a bomber down the sink.
lol. I firmly believe that the seasonal Southern Tier big bottles are designed to be split between 2-3 people.
Anyway... do any of you have Grand Cru Bruocsella OR Lindemans Cuvée René in your stores?
Some of them work as session beers (the Saison, the IPAs, the hefeweizen), but in general you're right. You're not really supposed to sit around and finish a big bottle of a thick, sweet desert beer by yourself (though I have and will continue to anyway).
Josh: Yeah, we have them here (actually not 100% on the Bruocsella, but I'm pretty sure I've seen it). But I've never had them.
I'm very curious about them... especially the Bruocsella. It's the only "pure" Lambic available in the states.
We get a lot of Cantillon stuff here, I'm pretty sure I've seen it. Do you want me to grab you a bottle if I see it?
Let me check one more place, and if it isn't there then yes please.
They do not have the Brucosella. They have like 5 other Cantillons, but not that one. They do have the Cuvee Rene though.
Got two bottles of Namaste from my store and a My Antonia from Hubbitron.
Picked up a 6 pack of Sam Adams Long Shot for $3 last week. This is from Sam Adam's homebrew contest and has 2 barleywines, old ales and saisons. Seriously the best thing Sam Adams has ever put out. The saison isn't special, but is really crisp and refreshing. I prefer my barleywines to be darker, but this one is still good. But the old ale is fucking primo.
I'm 80% through a Dogfish Head Red & White. Great beer, I'm getting kind of wasted on it.
Leaps and bounds over Black& Blue.
Josh: How is Namaste? It seems kind of like a weak combo especially for Dogfish. Plus low gravity. Should I buy this?
Yeah, Black & Blue is kind of lame.
Re: Namaste: It's a perfectly acceptable Belgian style wit beer.
Do you have a lawn? It would be good for drinking during/after cutting the lawn, I think.
I may have procured one or more bottles of Tactical Nuclear Penguin. Fingers crossed.
Maybe you trade for a 40oz of Liquor de Malt?
Drinking Monk's Cafe sour red ale. I haven't had many sour ales but I like this one.
I WAS JUST ABOUT TO MENTION THIS ONE. I talked about sour beer before but I think this one is better than Duchess de Bourgogne. Ommegang Zuur is fantastic as well.
Fall Seasonals are out. I really like Shipyard's Pumpkinhead.
BrewFest near my house at end of month
http://sibrewfest.com/
Dogfish's Miles Davis Bitches Brew came out last week. I waited til payday to pick it up, and they were all out. I am sad face.
Yeah, any super limited beers like that you gotta get when you see them, or never again.
That being said: I haven't even seen any of it yet.
Yeah, I didn't realize it was THAT limited or I would have put back the stuff I had when the store owner told me he was cracking the case and picked up a couple of 'em.
Noob.
