Dudes. I kicked the sixtol in 4 days. With only modest help.
Decided this was a good day to open my Firestone Parabola. Cool weather, grilled salmon sandwich and football.
Started an experiment tonight. Chia seed manhattan!
edit - Total failure. They won't absorb alcohol!!?? My seeds are defective.
All the Pappy Van Winkle showed up on Tuesday when I wasn't ready for it and sold out everywhere in hours. Same deal for the Antiques Collection, they were on the same truck and everyone is hoarding this stuff now. Looks like I missed out this year. The chase is just too insane now, I don't really mind missing out on calling daily and driving all over the place to spend $100 a bottle. If I luck into a good bottle then I'll buy it, otherwise I have stopped caring.
I did get a couple things while I was out today. A dusty Wild Turkey Rare Breed that I still have to research when it might be from, an Old Forester 200ml from 1996, 2 bottles of Costco's special release Kirkland 20yo single malt scotch ($45 a bottle for a 20 year!), and 2 bottles Stone Vertical Epic 2012. If the Kirkland scotch turns out good I plan on buying more, that's an insane price. They will probably be sold out within the week at most Costcos, so hurry if you're interested.
Would it be sacrilege to use that 20yo in a rusty nail?
Yes.
This isn't some super special 20yo, it doesn't even have provenance and it's cheap. I tasted some already and it's good. It's not epic nor does it have a very standout character. Most 20 year old scotches definitely shouldn't be mixers, but I wouldn't have a problem with using this one. The drink would turn out really good.
It is crazy easy to drink. There is no burn at all, just a nice relaxed sipper that would be great for scotch noobs. Personally I'd prefer it had a little more punch.
I change my answer to "no"
I had, like, 4 different kinds of whisky over the past 24 hours or so. I don't remember what they were, but they were expensive, and I enjoyed the glass of Jameson I had this afternoon more than any of them.
Jameson is the whiskey anyone from any class can drink and feel as if they found common ground. It would save lives if we deployed it in wars instead of soldiers.

Josh came through with the beers from the 2011 beer trade a few weeks ago. Better late than never, RIGHT FROGACUDA? Faggot.
Anyhow. I'm gonna open one this weekend to celebrate the end of my first semester at big boy university. Can't wait!! <3 <3 <3
Vertical Epic 2012 might be the best one yet. It's a really awesome dark holiday beer, very malty and thick.
I just picked up a bottle of Epic 2012 this past weekend but haven't tried it yet. Maybe I should grab a few more...
I really wish I had started collecting the Vertical series... I know a dude that's got three bottles of the entire set. I hope I'm around when he decides to open them.
Drinking an 18 year old Laphroaig, my dad is trying to help me get back into scotch after I basically ruined my ability to drink it by drinking way too much. This thing is amazing, you can taste the salt on the tip of your tongue and it just feels like it evaporates into smoke in the back of your throat. Never had anything like that.
This is the third one, 12 year old MacAllen was last night, Glenmorangie Quinta Reben.
Gotta get my stomach to stop reacting so poorly to it.
Eat one of those chewable Tums about 5 minutes before you have your whisky.
So, I got some of that Troegs Mad Elf last week to get in with the season. I kept getting told it was AMAZING.
...and it was okay. Cherry's not really my thing, but thankfully that flavor wasn't prominent. It was on the sweeter end and VERY rich for an ale. But, nothing all too earth shattering.
Now, Troegs Java Head... THAT'S a great beer.
I'll be keeping my eyes peeled for these:

Just had my first 120min IPA. It was after a couple glasses of wine so I'm now drunk, but fuck it was delicious. Had it in the basement for 7-8 months.
I had a 2008 120min tonight. Also a 2008 Schlafly Reserve barrel aged stout.
I also got a 750ml bottle of Rodenbach Grand Cru. I'm fucking stoked on it.
Such a great sour. Just so great.
I had a little glass at Max's a while back. It was the business.
It's my absolute favorite. There are two bars here in New Haven that have it on tap.
We're doing a Game of Thrones party for the new season with the beers and roasted legs of beasts.
Found a bunch of the Goose Island bourbon county stout. This stuff is so over rated. It's way too sweet and completely over done. Port brewing's older viscosity and barrel aged ten fidy are better examples of this style.
For Christmas I got a bottle of Glendronach 12 that I'm looking forward to opening once I get home from my rents' house.
Got a bottle of Jefferson's Presidential Select 18 year bourbon for Christmas. I cannot wait to be over my stomach virus to try this shit.
My dad has a bottle I've had some from that, which for your sake I will drink some of tonight after I'm done with the Hennessy. Bottle #1738 distilled in 91, it's really good so that's one hell of a gift.
I've got me a Port Brewing Santa's Little Helper Imperial Stout going tonight. Not the heaviest of stouts, but it's a barrel-aged brew so it's at least got plenty of flavor.
I think this is beer three out of the box of random beers my girlfriend's folks got me for Christmas. There's a Troegenator in there that I'm pretty excited to try.
Big news in the bourbon world today. Diageo is going to reopen the Stitzel Weller distillery which was closed in 1992. That's where all the Pappy Van Winkle stocks came from till they switched to a new sources recently. It's probably the most legendary closed American distillery there is.
I've asked before, maybe even in this thread, but I'll ask again. I've never had a bourbon where I was like "Hey! I sure would like more of this!" I would like to have that bourbon.
The only whiskys I've ever enjoyed have been scotch. The only scotch I've had that I like more than Jameson (in before elitism) is Suntory Yamazaki.
I would like bourbon recommendations. Scotch as well. There are two insane scotch bars within walking distance, I'd go ask the bartender for recommendations, but I don't like talking to people.
For scotch you should try a peated scotch and an unpeated scotch. For peated get Lagavulin 16. You can find it everywhere, but it is damn good. It's the scotch that gets people into Islay scotches. For unpeated scotch I am becoming a big fan of Glendronach right now. I have a bottle of their 12 year that is much more interesting than a Macallan 12, and their 15 year has been getting a lot of recognition and won a few whiskey of the year awards.
A lot of the great bourbons and ryes are really hard to find, so I'll break this down by stuff you can try to find in a bar or inexpensive bottles you could buy. The bar list: Pappy Van Winkle 20 or 15 year old, Van Winkle Family Reserve 13yo rye, or Sazerac 18yo Rye. There's a lot but it's hard to list them. Stuff you could buy a bottle of- Any Four Roses is good from the super cheap yellow label up to the $80 limited editions. Other bottles I really like in the $20-$30 range are Elmer T. Lee, Weller 12 yo, and Weller Antique (give the Wellers air time).
If they have a whiskey menu post it here and I can tell what's good off that.
I prefer Laphroig over Laguvulin but both are really good. Islay scotches are my favorite right now. I have not tried Glendronach so I may have to give that a try next time I see it. Glenmorangie I think the Quinta Ruban is the one I've had is also good.
Also the bourbon Nomi mentioned, the Jefferson's Presidential Select 18 is good. I'm glad you asked about bourbon because I want to try some more of that as well.
Birds of a Feather has both scotches I mentioned. I also really like Bruichladdich 10 and they have that too.

Learned how to flame an orange peel this week and just used my new skills to make a kick ass old fashioned. Table spoon simple syrup, 2oz bourbon, 2 dashes bitters, and the flamed orange peel. Used Elmer T Lee. It's awesome.
The old fashioned is an excellent drink.
One of my uncles bought me a bottle of Laphroaig as a birthday present. The smokey flavor is almost too intense, and tastes like I'm drinking whiskey with a freshly burnt campfire log for a glass. Not entirely sure how I feel about it after only one glass, but it's still pretty good and I could see it growing on me more.
Experiment with water or ice, imo. It really helps some whiskeys, and really shits on others.
Which Laphroiag is it? That sounds like my reaction to the Quarter cask version. I did not like it at all when i opened it but after a few weeks it got a lot better. It was too woody/ashy at first, but that subsided and it developed some more sweetness which really made it turn the corner for me.
It's the scotch that tastes like camping. Best when drank outside.
Left Handing Brewing Smoke Jumper has that campfire taste/smell. I loved it.
It's made by AleSmith up in Mira Mesa. BevMo or Whole Foods will have it. Even more manly at 12%. The darkest, most robust caramel coffee stout to ever caress my lips. I have a bottle of their barley wine in my fridge I'm waiting to try on a good day.

My old roommate accidentally drank one of my speedway stouts and she wouldn't shut up about how good it was. She still brings it up.
That looks and sounds like everything I want in a beer.
I just prepared my first batch of rock and rye, an old cocktail/cold medicine. I read a bunch of the recipes and kind of went with an amalgamation of them.
1 bottle rye (Rittenhouse in my case)
5oz rock candy (which i could not find so i subbed sugar in the raw)
1 sliced orange
1 sliced lemon
4 luxardo cherries with an extra spoonful or two of juice from the jar
10 whole cloves
10 whole allspice
cinnamon stick
Combine in an airtight jar, store in a cool dark place for about 2 to 4 weeks. Some say to store till all the sugar is dissolved. Then strain back into a bottle. I'm throwing mine in the closet now.
Here's an article with more information about the rock and rye. It has an interesting history. http://online.wsj.com/article/SB1000...025188798.html
We were serving a batch of that at the restaurant a few weeks ago.
I instagramed the shit out of these beers because IAMSOFUCKINGEXCITEDAREYOUIKIDDINGME

I'm ashamed to say I haven't tried any Lost Abbey yet, although I've been working on Port Brewing's catalog for months now.
I've had a few things by Lost Abbey before and while their execution is good, most of their catalog isn't to my taste.
They did make a Devotion using only Brett yeast and I enjoyed the fuck out of it on principle alone.
I love Brettanomyces.
Got a bottle of Laphroaig Quarter Cask. It smells like jerky, tastes like burned wood, and is really benefiting from these crazy 2" blocks of ice I have now.
Anyway, I like it. It's just SUPER different from the Yamazaki I usually enjoy.
Is this getting used to it, or something magic that happens on the shelf?
Magic that happens. Some whiskey tastes better after it's been open a while, some tastes worse, most of it doesn't change too much. When I opened my QC I thought it was terrible even though I like regular Laph. Now I think it's great. Same thing happened to another friend with his bottle. The first pour tastes like an ash tray but it gets sweeter and the ash turns to smoke.
Going to roll some Ninkasi Critical Hit tomorrow afternoon. It came w/its own character sheet. Lulz.
I think Barleywine is awesome, I'm interested to here how that is.
Report back.
St Martin - Cloak of Martin.
First quad they've ever done - and they've been doing beer for a millenia.
It's very good.
Also I drank the Serpent's Stout tonight and it's phenomenal.
Sand Creek Brewing's Liljas Hell Hound Brown Ale. Damn it's good.
Pliny the Younger is in town. I would have gone to get some if #1 - they weren't charging $20 for 10oz (for charity ), and #2- I still cared about beer.
Everyone Beer Advocate has such a fucking hard on for those Pliney beers, are they really the two best beers in the world?
Also I'm going to open my Speedway Stout right now to celebrate tomorrow being the only day off I have over an 11 day span, I'll be back in a few hours to report back and hopefully be on my way to drunk.
If you like IPAs then yes, they are very great IPAs. Pliny the Elder isn't that hard to find since you can get it in bottles and good bars will get kegs now and then. Pliny The Younger is not really worth the extra effort of tracking down and lining up early for. I've had both, although not side by side (wish I ordered a PTE to go with my PTY), and I couldn't tell you what the difference is.
mojo
The speedway was good, but not as good as Serpent or Victory. It was also the most expensive of the three, so I'll probably never buy it again.
Still tasty though!
Interesting read.

I had one of these yesterday and think I may have found my new spring/summer libation...
I found a few bottles of Sam Adams Triple Bock (1997) sealed for $25/ea. If anyone is interested in buying one, LMK. It's a love/hate beer. I had one and... it's certainly difficult to describe. Chocolate, cherries, little/no carbonation left, 17.5% ABV, etc... Check out the wide range of reviews on BA.
I'm in. PM me your paypal address please!
2007 Worldwide Stout. Smokey soy sauce. It's getting better as it warms up.
FYI, I couldn't finish that WWS. It kind of sucked. Actually, WWS in general kind of sucks.
The next planned beer is a 2006 Fort on my birthday in Dec. I've recently had a Victory Saison that was pretty good, and a Samuel Smith chocolate stout that can fuck right off forever.
Havent had a Triple Bock yet. I'm scurred.
I love chocolate stouts.
Maybe more than my wife.
I like them too, but this one is gross. Tastes like those shitty easter "chocolate" bunnies they make out of vegetable oil.
My goodness, this stuff.

La Folie 2012. Not as good as the Clutch beer, but very nice.
I am going in expecting it to taste like bong water, but instead of water it's actually soy sauce.
I'm at a brewery near my house and they're so small they can make tons of crazy shit but just big enough they have a tasting room.
I'm drinking raspberry wheat with raspberry chunks in it, blueberry Hefeweizen with blueberry in the glass, apricot peach Hefeweizen, chocolate hazelnut coffee stout and chocolate porter.
Also pumpkin spice ale with sugar in the raw and pumpkin spice on the rim all margarita style.
It's the best place I've ever been in my life.
I broke out the 2010 Bruery Cotton tonight. Way too sweet I think, but I can see this working with cake or ice cream.
I also had some big bottle Sam Adams funky Belgian kind of thing that was probably the best beer I've had from those guys. Not saying much, but still pretty good.
Paolo Bea 2009 Chiara
Orange wines is the thing I'm digging on right now.
I'm perhaps more drunk than ever.
Wheeeeeee!
Elevate your game. Do a butt chug.
I think Sam Adams is the best brewer in the nation. Let me explain.
It's not that they make the best beers. It's that they make so many seasonals and small batch beers that are available all over the country. I can get a new seasonal by them every three months or so from work that's 24 bottles for $22. We have a four pack of small batch stuff they did for $20. All of it is good, some of it is even great. The chocolate chili bock called Vixen is maybe the best chocolate beer I've ever had out of a bottle.
That was a great push for faux American capitalism. You want good beer? Go get it.
I get plenty of good beers. But some I can't get on the west coast without exorbitant cost. For the dollar, Sam Adams makes the highest quality product you can get everywhere.
I love that we live about ten minutes from Bear Republic. Went there last weekend for a late birthday thing and got absolutely smashed on the Peter Brown Tribute Ale. Still the best ABA on the planet.
The server overheard that we were there for my birthday and brought me a free pint. Faith in humanity restored.
I have had a lot of Bear Republic and never been disappointed.
That would require me to do something nice for someone else.
No, see, you just pull a Frogacuda and get me to send you beer and then never send anything back. Totally worked for him.
Cunt.
Really? What a bitch.
