Picked up some more Monk's Blood. Enjoyed it enough last time to pick up another 4 pack.
Monk's Blood is pretty good. I highly recommend this, though:
I haven't been posting anything useful in this thread for a month or so. I haven't been writing down my tasting notes as of late because I don't know why. But I'll mention what I can remember.
Iron City is one of the worst beers I've ever had. I got my dad the 6 pack because he grew up in Pittsburgh. He was pretty stoked, I was not stoked to split one with him. Looks bad, smells bad, tastes bad. The total package. Spilled some on the counter and, I shit you not, it bleached the tan countertop white.
The Bigfoot Ale claims to be a barleywine but might actually be an IPA in disguise. My dad gave me one of these in trade for the Iron City. I enjoyed it. Lots even. I'll probably pick up 6 pack (4 pack?) next year.
That 2007 Raison De'Extra was pretty awesome. Tasted like a fancy sipping liquor. Very strong, pretty complicated. Insane amounts of sediment. I'll give the other one a serious spin before I pour it.
The 2006 (07?) Ola Dubh was a surprisingly mild beer. The package described it as "viscous and gloopy" It was neither of these. It was pretty good, strong but palatable whiskey notes, but wildly overpriced.
Sam Smith Winter Ale didn't really taste like anything... kind of a disappointment. I've enjoyed their beers in the past, but this one was pretty meh.
Allagash Hugh Mallone's stand out characteristic is it's sharp, and bitter taste and it's head like a fucking bubble bath. Neither of these are a bad thing... I just don't think I was in the mood for either at the time. I enjoyed this one when I had it last year, not so much this year.
Dogfish Wrath of Pecant. Initial impressions stick. This reminds me of the Indian Brown Ale. I'm not sure I could tell them apart in a taste test. Good beer, not amazing. Glad I have a couple more bottles... but really only because of how much I can sling them for on ebay.
The Creme Brulee stout is something you should really track down.
The Creme Brulee stout goes back into production in June, can not wait to get my hands on some.
So that mini keg turned out to be just ok. The beer was drinkable, but nothing great. If you find one cheap pick it up just because it is kind of fun. But after having it open for 3 days it starts to lose carbonation.
Going to drink the bottle of Wrath of Pecan josh picked up for me this weekend in celebration of my birthday. And then I am going to go see Kick-Ass at a movie theater that has couches, is 21 and over and has an awesome bar.
How's the Delirium? I'm tempted to buy it every time I hit up the store.
Good post, Josh! Iron City is terrible. Oskar Blues Yella Pils is pretty fucking awful too - especially for a craft beer.
Love DFH Raison - not too thrilled with DFH's Palo Alto though. I'll be ordering as much Creme Brulee as I can get in June/July.
Bigfoot is one of the older craft brews around - it's been out, I think, almost 30 years as a seasonal. I've heard good things about Sierra's 30th Anniversary Porter, too ($10 750ML bottle).
Now I'm craving another Raison D'Extra. THANKS JOSH.
So I just found a bottle of Goose Island's Matilda at a restaurant. It is their first Belgian style ale that I have tried, Matilda being their version of a Belgian style pale ale. And it was fucking amazing. The yeast was good and funky, but this was more sweet and sour than your average IPA. Almost like a lambic. There was very little head on the beer, but it was actually quite bubbly. The color was a nice sunset paly orange (seriously, the prettiest beer I think I have ever had). This was a 2010, and like yours, I really saw where it could have grown from some aging.
I think Immort Ale is out now, but I can't fucking find it anywhere. Anyone seen any? I'm not going to miss it this year.
Yeah, let me know. I'm going to the grail of beer stores tomorrow daytime, maybe it'll be there. Dogfish is also releasing "My Antonia" this month for the first time. Its an Imperial Pilsner. I've not had a Pilsner that has impressed me yet, so I am curious about this one for sure.
Deal.
So far, I've only been able to get one case of Immort Ale. Very expensive stuff.
Imperial Pilsner? That has me curious. I wouldn't be surprised if it was awful, as Imperial would probably mean a stronger taste. Seems like with lighter beers I generally expect them to have a thinner flavor; if I'm going to grab anything lighter than an ESB I generally don't want it to have much body, be it taste, substance or otherwise.
Have you ever had a Pilsner Urquell? I would highly recommend it if you haven't had it. The first and original Pilsner. If you can still find it in the large cans that's the way to go. Unfortunately the distributor has decided to stop importing the cans. :(
My dad and I have been trying some different Pilsners to find a replacement but sadly nothing measures up.
Some Stone's Smoked Porter tonight. Good beer for casual sipping. Not super strong or fragrant like a lot of what I've been drinking, but smooth and goes great with a burger.
Finally opened my bottle of this, and I mostly agree. It is amazing with what went into this that it is pretty much a really good indian brown ale. Though, I can taste the smoky pecan notes, especially in the front. But if you poured me a glass of this and I didn't know what it was it would just be a good, slightly smokey brown ale.
Also had Lakefront Matlese Falcon and Casablanca. Lakefront is a local brewer and they do a lot of special batches for other local companies. Its nice because they are usually really good beers, and you cannot get them anywhere but that specific place of business. The Maltese is a dark lager, which is similar to another brew of theirs that I like but more hoppy. Very good. The other is an amber pilsner that was just ok. Had at one of the only single screen movie theatres left in town.
Allagash 4 Ale

This was bitter, not like make a harsh face bitter, but certainly not as balanced as I was expecting. Tasty, just took a couple sips to adjust to it. Epic lacing.
North Coast Old Rasputin XII

Fuck what you heard. This is amazing. Strong burbon flavour. Well worth the price. I'm going to go pick up another one of these on Monday and stash it away for a year or so.
I saw some of that Old Rasputin XII the other day for like $17. Worth it? Maybe I'll pick some up for a special occasion.
It is definitely worth picking up a bottle or two of Old Rasputin XII.
I had a Bear Republic Black Stout the other night, but didn't like the bitterness. I still have their Red Rocket Ale to drink, and a bottle of Allagash Black I'll probably crack this week. I picked up some Samuel Smith organic strawberry something for my gf to try. That any good?
It sounds interesting at least?
Report back!
Alright, I'll get on it.
I actually found some more Rochefort 10 in the wild today. Only 2 bottles, but still, tonight is a good night.
Why get any Rochefort other than 10? Also, Immort is probably my favorite DFH seasonal. It's like a scotch ale on PCP. They usually do a cask at the brewpub in DE when it comes around....
The website says it releases this month! I go ask questions at liquor stores, and I'm met with slack jawed expressions. I will fight motherfuckers if I can't find a four pack this year.
I still have your Wrath of Pecant btw. When are you going to pick it up?
When I give you a case of Immort.
If it releases this month, it will be another month before all the paperwork is done to get it to the distributors. You're going to have to drive to DE to get it before then.
It is about an hour and a half from my apartment, which is not bad at all.
Hey faggots, Josh told me to jump in here and ask for Belgian style recommendations. I like shit like Leinenkugel Sunset Wheat and Blue Moon.
Make it happen.
Edit: Josh has told me about Allagash White and it's friends.
If you like the Sunset Wheat and Blue Moon you will definitely like Wittekerke and Hoegaarden.
I can vouch for Hoegaarden. It is pretty much the perfect band practice beer.
Oak Aged Un-earthly IPA from Souther Tier. Do it now.
Then you failed me, Rich.
The 8 and the 6 are easy to find (at the places that stock them anyway), but the 10 sells out super quick so it's hard to find, even at that supermarket-sized place I go. It's not like it doesn't get distro, the store I go to says they buy every bit they can as often as they can get it, it's just a demand thing. Maybe no one has good taste where you are?Availability, but the 8 is also very, very good.
No luck on the Allegash jams, did get a 6 pack of Hoegaarden.
I started thinking about where you live and I'm pretty sure there are only a few beer stores with a decent selection. You will probably always be SOL on belgian style but eastern shore beer stores stock the shit out of Dogfish (win) such as Winchester (open till 12) and what's that place on rt 18? Love Point Liquors?
True and the 10 is a pretty penny for 11.2 oz of beer.
Chux: give me a dollar amount you want to spend, and I'll grab you some Allagash and bring it by when I pick up street fighter.
Nothing new here, except for the Saison (which was awesome, smelled like pussy, and had the most out of control head in the history of beer) and maybe the Basha, but I think I talked about that in one of the long Max's posts. I'm enjoying the Vertical Epic right now. I have one left, and I will miss it when it is gone :(
Chimay is not a watching hockey kind of beer btw...
Saison Dupont is one of my all time favorites. Also I managed to get 2 kegs of Nugget Nectar to put on tap here at J&P.
Benchmark whiskey. This stuff is brutal. I'm now upset I bought two bottles.
Tried some Heavy Seas Below Decks tonight because I just wanted to try something different. Not a real barley wine (it's marketed as a barley wine-style ale) and it's not that adventurous, but it's actually pretty drinkable as the kind of thing I can knock back a few of, which isn't really true of most barley wines.
Allagash black. It's ok. Too hoppy for me.
That Samuel Smith's strawberry ale was really good. I was expecting something fake tasting, like the Young's Banana, but it tastes like fresh strawberries mushed in the ale. Should be a great summer brew. It's not tiring by the end of the bottle like a lot of the flavored beers.
Nabbed a bottle of this for tonight. It was definitely a great alternative to the usual weisbier or summer ale. Picked up some Old Rasputin XII too, but I threw it in the special occasion box. Which is getting pretty big. When I get a worthy occasion I'm going to have one hell of a night.
I have a long term plan box, and a special occasion box. We roll fancy in Baltimore.
Dude came into Max's tonight trying to impress his date (?) by ordering THE STRONGEST DARKEST BEER YOU GOT, Which was 18.6%, and they served it to him in a pint glass. Dude came back up about 5 minutes later by himself and ordered a Guiness because he can't drink "that shit (it) tastes like maple syrup and coffee"
Then he talked about his penis to the bartender and she called him a creep.
Clipper City (or Heavy Seas, depending on whether or not they've run out of their old labels yet) Red Sky at Night Saison is out and about now. I really enjoy it... if you like the style, so will you.
Perfect band practice/lawnmowing/bbq/warm weather beer. Find it.
Swiss sour beer: don't touch it!
Confirmed. Tastes like a glass of malt vinegar.
Put glasses on him and he looks like Hubbitron earlier tonight.
JUST FOUND OUT WHERE I'M GOING AFTER WORK
http://img.skitch.com/20100502-qufqf...fm5rht1391.jpg
Oh shit.
I'm going to the Perfect Pour today. They better fucking have a 4 pack. I've heard reports that it is in various stores. Fuck the world.
So finally made it to the liquor store and stocked up on some single bottles to enjoy over the next week or 2. Somehow managed to come home with almost no bottles below 10% ABV. Woops!
The one bottle I picked up less than 10% was Lakefront Fixed Gear Ale. lakefront only does one specialty ale a year, and this is it for 2010. The past couple years they have chosen to do strong beers, but I personally thought they were boring. This year it is a red ale at a relatively low ABV of 6%. I love red ales, and this one is pretty decent. I was hoping for something special though, and this isn't it. I actually think they should just add this to their regular rotation of beers.

Right now drinking Bell's Third Coast Old Ale. 10.2% ABV and poors a rusty dark without a hint of head. A real funky sour flavor with sweet after notes. This is deep and heavy, making it a slow drink. The high alcohol though is well hidden though. It probably helps that this has been aged a year.
No dice on the Immort. :(
I did pick up 4 single bottles of various Brew Dog beers, a 4 pack of 2009 Clipper City barley wine, and some other various awesomeness. I'll report back as I get through them over the next month or so.
Bells is a fine brewery. They made it to GA just before I moved and I thoroughly enjoyed some hopslam and expedition stout. High hopes for them coming to MD.
In other news the Dogfish Alehouse experience was perfect. The weather only made it better. I had 2 Immort Ales and my girl had a Lawnmower Light and 2 Burton Batons. She's so rad. The Immort was scrumtralescent.
Drove to Delaware for lunch lol.
Dogfish Billy Budd brewpub exclusive: blend of Indian Brown, Palo Santo and an "experimental" 120 min. It is thick and malty. Sweet too. makes the Life and Limb bland by comparison. 15% abv. Serious business. I'd be stoked if they bottled this, but I don't think it's going to happen.
Gonna try to buy a growler of it to take home.
No 75min cask today :(
Pffft. No growlers allowed. I can get a growler of Lawnmower or Chicory Stout, and that's it!
Fags...
It would twist your vagina in knots. I also don't remember what it's called. Ask Hubitron.
The Dogfish Immort Ale is the truth. Emailed Sam from Dogfish, and he stashed away two four packs for me. Very cool, and somewhat unexpected. Totally worth the drive I made for it, and totally worth letting warm up a bit before you drink it. There is a lot going on here. Of the eight bottles I picked up, two went to my parents, two went to the fridge, two are in the short term cabinet, two are reserved for long term plans. Totally. Stoked.
The Allagash Oddessy was pretty damn good too, though I don't know if it's worth the hefty price tag.
The Black Chocolate Stout I had had in the cabinet since October (November?) I don't think I was in the mood for it when I had it.
Heavy Seas (formerly Clipper City) mades a fucking good Saison style ale. The 7.5% ABV makes it kind of heavy, bit it's delicious. I also had one of the Below Decks barleywines, which I always enjoy.
Sierra Nevada 30th Anniversary is a creamy, thick stout that hides its ABV well. After dinner or gtfo.
Am going back here tonight: http://www.gingerman-ny.com/content/view/30/107/
Recommend me some beers.
Hey Rich, you coming to hang out with me and Anth tonight?
I left before any recommendations. I only got the Hofbrau hefe. I was about to order the Delirium Tremens on tap, but I had to go poo so I jumped ship.
Will check out the Malheur next time.
Hey Josh, they had a $90 beer. (it was 3L, but still)
They also have a beer menu that changes daily. It's a pretty epic pretentious place, but their menu is no joke.
Wtf?
I didn't make you miss the ferry and you were offered places to crash.
I have 7 4 Packs of Immort Ale left if anyone is going crazy looking for it.
I want one. How much?
I'm tempted to grab one myself depending on how much it is.
Me too
EDIT: Nevermind, I had Immort Ale confused with Dreadnaught for some reason. There's lots of Immort around here.
Drink it ice cold from the bottle, brah. That 11% is gonna get you WASTED.
http://www.the-nextlevel.com/board/p...&pictureid=800
Fuck you both. I'll enjoy my 90 Minute OUT OF THE BOTTLE WHAT NOW FAGGOT
Get a 120min to drink out of the bottle at 0 degrees, imo.
Bottle of Sink the Bismark from an ice luge.
my work just released an anniversary beer made for us by the bruery. imperial porter with vanilla beans and bourbon soaked oak chips. really good, and will be better come 2011.
our online store is pretty extensive if you all are looking for fun stuff. we ship pretty much everywhere except texas. (sorry doc)
$23.66 to ship a 6 pack to NY via UPS. Ouch.
No thanks.
