If You Enjoyed...

You see the concept of recommendations based on past purchases and viewings applied all over the internet, perhaps most notably on Amazon and Netflix. However, no algorithm has the depth of experience over an extended period of time that TNL does. Thus, I thought it would be interesting to set up a thread where someone could ask for game recommendations based on a sub-genre or game that he or she enjoyed.

I would like to selfishly start us off with two obvious ones to those of you that know me at all:

Gears of War and Uncharted

Off the top of my head, I have played the following that I would consider reasonably similar:

Gears of War
50 Cent: Blood in the Sand
Eat Lead: The Return of Matt Hazard

Uncharted
Indiana Jones series
Tomb Raider series

There have to be more games like these out there. Help!

I'd say Dark Sector fits in with the Gears category.

I'll add a few that are less immediately relatable to one another on the surface:
If you liked Phantasy Star Online, then you should fuckin' love Borderlands.
If you liked SSX, Pure is the closest approximation we've gotten this gen.
If you liked Trials HD, you may find a lot to like about the Time Trials in Mirror's Edge.
If you want an awesome LEGO game, ignore the shallow beat 'em up bullshit of the actual LEGO ______ games and pretend Banjo Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts is LEGO-themed.

This is a great idea for a thread but I have a few questions. Are you keeping it current gen games only or it doesn't matter? Will you update the original post to keep it current so we don't have to read through the whole thread if it gets large? If it's done properly I think the thread could be a great asset.

Previously I was planning to do a big thread like this spanning all gaming eras (if you like Duck Hunt, try Safari Hunt. If you like King's Quest, try Hand of Fate, etc.) to get people to play underdogs but was too lazy to make it.

If you like Virtual On, Senko no Ronde is pretty cool.

If you like Pac-Man, you'd better love Raimais.

A much better way for this to work is to have someone come in the thread and say "Hey guys I just played X and it was awesome. Anyone have any recommendations of games like it?" , To which we reply with the appropriate answer.

Well, it was clunky and frustrating back when it came out but a good game despite that. When I played it again a few years ago it was the same as I remembered it being. It's not for everyone but if you liked it then, you probably still will.

The voice acting is probably the hardest thing to get over. And was back then too. Other than that, I think it holds up.

That was just to show a point by exclusion, that Super Turrican 2 may not be exactly what you're looking for in a Turrican game - given its more linear levels and having an awful lot of vehicle scenes.

I'd argue that trend started with Mega Turrican. Only the first two titles and both versions of Super Turrican really have the wide-open exploration-oriented levels that, to me, define a Turrican game. Not that I don't think that Mega Turrican is one of the best run-and-guns ever made, but I don't think it's in the same style as its predecessors.

That pepsiman game just makes me so fucking angry.

I can't begin to describe all the ways, either.

The Pepsiman game is one of the few games that've made me laugh out loud. ..the shovel-in-your-face in that one subway section gets me every time.

Went to play Pepsiman tonight but I've been stuck at level 4 for awhile. Namco Museum Vol.5 was in from earlier this week so almost randomly I ended up playing Metro-Cross for the first time ever tonight.
I was surprised at how similar Metro-Cross is to Pepsiman. Pepsiman is basically Metro-Cross in 3-D.

Now, Finger Flashing. That's a game that makes me angry in so many ways, mainly for making me suck so bad. Controlling the playfield speed, and setting up for combos, and deciphering the different enemies is delightfully maddening.

Kaiser knuckle looks pretty awesome in a world heroes kind of way. I like how azteca totally isn't blanka and vega smashed together, and the general isn't M.bison, nope not at all. Kaiser Knuckle > Martial Champion, definitely. In KK it's awesome to see the stages take damage, or even near-complete destruction if someone lands a Crush powered special move. Some moves even mess up the floors like Kazuya's Gasai-Geki (HCB+P).

I'll give another vote for Midnight Resistance. The Genesis version has a superior soundtrack- hearing the arcade's BGM in MAME was somewhat of a letdown in comparison. The Super Charged Flamethrower is even better than Contra 4's L2 machine gun.

lol yeah the stages just explode near the end of fights for sometimes seemingly no reason. This feature need to make a comeback imo.
