It's good to enjoy Golden Axe for a 15 minute jaunt every now and then. I usually pick Gillius Thunderhead- what he lacks in magic power, he makes up for with the axe.
One thing I've noticed in the arcade version is that you can repeatedly kill enemies using magic- you can save up a magic charge, then leave a few potions strewn out in the boss area. Do some damage to each of the enemies, get near your stash on the ground, and fire away with the potions you are currently carrying. If all goes right, you should hear the screams of slain enemies. Pick up a potion and blast them one more time. Keep doing that until your stockpile on the ground is used up, and you have a few extra kills to boost your strength rating.

Tyris Flare - She does have a cooler magic, plus DJ always grabs the guy characters, so I end up playing with chicks :)
Dwarf is cool too though .

I go with Tyris myself, sure Ax-Battler and Gilius had better attack power, but with the ridiculously devastating magic Tyris could let fly, she was the obvious choice for me.
That and she was also, ah, more pleasing to the eye ;)
