In A Gallery Show!

Hey guys,

If you're in the LA area around March/April (I'll finalize this when I know), I'm looking to be in another gallery show. The theme is 'bikes' since biking around LA has apparently become a hip thing to do.

I'm debating whether to use the "Monsters on Bikes" piece I did in November for this show and call it a day, OR do something completely new. I'm leaning to new.

Anywho! Was way excited about this and TNLers are awesome when it comes to feedback/support so I thought who better to tell, right?

New new new. May I suggest gigantic front wheel bikes from the 1800's? That would be choice. Congrats on another show.

You are making this stuff digital, correct? How are you going about printing it up for the show? I've been doing a lot of messing around in Photoshop/painter and I'm getting to the point that I'm going to be making some serious work that I'll eventually want to show.

Do something new and keep us updated!

I mostly print from home since buying a Canon i9900 (was $400) - it's an oversized 13x19 max printer, 8 colors (CMYK, photo magenta and Cyan, red, and green) and does pretty awesome color when matched with good paper. I'll more than likely use it for this show and do a small print run...10-20, nothing more.

For larger print runs, I like overnightprints.com - good deals and good results. Had some business cards done there on the cheap and will probably need more for the show.

(and I was totally thinking of those big wheel 1800's bikes =D)

Awesome news man. Way to go. From what I have seen of your work, I am not surprised to hear this.

Since learning that all posters have to be some form of hand-made print, I've been working my idea in big shapes and silhouettes first. Here's what I've got so far.

How are you going to do it? Lino or wood cut? Do you have access to a press?

No clue yet - friend said that Speedball has beginner lino and screen kits, so I may do it myself. Also looking into getting it done at a screening place or putting up a craigslist ad to see if a student wants to make some extra money.

Truth is, I don't know how expensive it's supposed to be to get screening done. So I'm worried that I could get screwed.

If you could find a student with access to a schools' press that would be ideal. Just depends on how greedy the student is...

By all means try out some of the speed ball stuff. Even if you don't use it for this show, I doubt this will be the last time you encounter this situation. Even the rubber stamp stuff could work. You might want to go with a more character based approach if you end up working that small though. PM me if you want anymore ideas on the DIY stuff, I have a bit of experience with this entry level stuff.

Any way you end up doing it, printing it yourself is going to be pretty difficult. Start doing tests today because it may take you a while to find a process that gives you results you will be comfortable charging people for.

The "IN" kind of gets lost, maybe another color?

I don't know what your final idea is, but based on the images you posted you'll probably want to go with silkscreen. Especially if you're doing multiple colors and/or any intricate details, a block print (wood or lino, either way) can get kind of frustrating and messy if you're not comfortable with the medium. But it's doable, if you want to try it out.

Since you're in CA, you should have no problem finding a smaller, artist-run silkscreen shop to do a small print run for you. Try looking through facebook/myspace for artist groups or places that print fancy T-shirts/Records, they can probably hook you up. I don't have much experience with pricing, but the price will go up with the size of the print and the number of colors used. Getting a student from craigslist is also a great idea, as they probably can use their schools inks/screens so you're just paying for their labor, BUT the prints might be a little rough around the edges.

Also, go with the horizontal layout. The scale of the letters vs the cat really works, makes him seem much more helpless. Well, not helpless, but like he's trying really hard and you're yelling "HANG IN THERE GOD DAMMIT"

Vertical one is better.

Went with the vert one. Two color print was too pricey, so picked a color that would go well with the off-white paper:

I dig the vert one. The height of the bike contributes to it being the right format, IMO. I also like the fact that he cat is driving on such a small surface with a massive bike. He can't even reach the pedals but he's giving it a go, anyway! Gotta love the heart in that cat.

Pretty good! It was empty to start and by the end of the night, so packed that folks spilled out into the street.

Haha, glad you do! It's my friend/old roomie's print! She's the one who got me into these shows in the first place.
