Mattresses sell at a crazy mark up because people buy a mattress once a decade. Retailers know that when someone buys a mattress from them, that's the only sale they're going to get from that person for the next ten years.
To bad for them.
This doesn't really matter to me. I move like twice a year and always end up moving things ten times worse than a mattress. Josh and Myk can back me up in saying that a 4x12, 6x10, and 8x10s are worse than mattresses. Mattresses are nothing.
Secondly, this is my senior year. The move after this will probably be the one to my job.
I've been doing as you advise for the past 8 years. I sleep on couches all the time. I use whatever the dorm has or the apartment has if it comes furnished. I've been burned way to many times by getting bad sleep.
It is time to get my own nice bed.
Thanks everyone. I'll look into some of the things you guys recommended.
The most comfortable bed I ever slept in was not much more than a four inch thick piece of foam on top of a sheet of plywood. I slept on it every night for almost two years, and never had the slightest discomfort. At that time, I was working demolition, so I would come home in pretty rough shape, and yet I would wake up in the morning without any back or neck problems whatsoever.
The bed I had at residence in university was basically the same thing, but it was fucking awful. I'd wake up with one arm completely numb and paralysed at least once a week, and generally felt like shit, so it's hard for me to recommend going that route.
I currently sleep on a $500 futon mattress, and I really don't have any complaints, other than the fact that I paid that much for it.
It's not the weight that is the problem, it's the size and the floppiness. Moving them around is a real pain in the ass. I can get a 4x12 cab from my bedroom to the car by myself. I can also get a queen size mattress from the bedroom to the car by myself, but it's like pulling a dead body around, flopping up against walls and needing to be drug around on the ground, and I sure as hell can't get it into my car. You need a van or a box truck or similar to move that shit in.
Also, fuck moving 8x10's.
I also recommend buying a good pillow. It makes a world of difference to your sleep.
