Deadly Premonition

I just started playing tonight and sunk almost 2 hours into it. I got to the police office, and until I figure out its tempo will probably just be following the plot, but the temptation to poke around is pretty strong. I'm really enjoying it so far despite all its problems, which seems to be par for the course.

York had a conversation with Zach about 80s DVDs and went into detail on Attack of the Killer Tomatoes. I'd keep playing this just to hear where else the dialogue will go.

My one friend is doing all the side mission stuff and said he got 24 hours on the game and hes only half way thru. Its crazy how much stuff is in there. Some of those drives take 5 to 10 minutes! The map is HUGE. I wasnt expecting that at all. It seems theres hidden stuff everywhere - I was just driving down a random back road and I saw an icon on the map. It was a human skull clue for another side mission I guess.

I know exactly what you mean. I've had this game stuck in my mind and think about it at the most inopportune times. And not to sound pretentious, but I have a theory as to why the game's so enjoyable: Even with the driving parts (stick around on the road after midnight, and you'll see what I mean), the game manages to be a perfect example of the grotesque: we enter a world equal parts (and incongruously) horrific and humorous. The PS2 shitty graphics seem nearly ironic, and the town--as much as any Grand Theft Auto--seems alive and independently functional of your character. As a result, the game manages to deliver dreamlike experience, a series of events dictated by the bizarre as much as logic. Add to this the stilted but genuinely likable characters, and you really have a rough diamond.

I've been describing this as "some sort of twisted, horror Shenmue" to people. Amirite? (Y/N)

Silent Hill mixed with Shenmue, directed by David Lynch.

Another fucked up thing it does for people who have played lots of games is occasionally switching to a fixed camera for no reason. It's careful so far to always do it when I'm not being attacked, but it throws me off each time.

I like the voice work for the enemies. haahaa

Amazing scene:

York knocks at the sheriff's house. George opens the door slowly and peers out. The house is dark behind him probably because the designers were too lazy to put anything in it. There's a pause. York speaks:

"George, do you prefer hot sauce or mustard?"

uhmm what? It's a flat, black texture. Wheels in this game are octagons. You really think they're gonna take the time to make a house look like it has an inside?
