This game. Holy shit. The controls are shit but it's so fucking crazy and weird I can't stop playing it.
I just played and beat this game over the past couple days. The ending turned out to be surprisingly touching, even though it lost it's sense of humor. I'm a little late to the party on this game, but I'm really happy I picked this up. I'd love to see what Swery 65 could do with a better team and more money; I think it could be something really, really good.
He also wants to return to York in a future game as well so thats awesome. Also, listen to Shidoshi's podcast that has an interview with Swery thru York. Great stuff.
I finished this last night. Absolutely loved the entire thing. As far as survival horror type games go, this is right up there with Silent Hill 1 2 3 for me. I honestly think its one of the best stories Ive ever seen in a game. It leaves alot of room for interpretation. I dont think everything is supposed to be taken so literally - as thats where Im reading alot of peoples' problems around the net with the latter sections and enemies of the game. Some of the scenes were actually pretty powerful (bathtub murder scene). I got to give props to the music too. All time classic stuff.
I love how the game ends: You dont just beat the final boss here and the credits roll. I love how you can travel the town and say your goodbyes to everyone. They actually have alot to say too if you continue to talk to them. I almost didnt want it to end. One of the later scenes when Zack asks for the car to stop in the forest with the kids and the women who died is just brilliant.
One stupid thing that caught my attention was the shadows you fight in the entire game - they are almost stuck inside of a limbo/purgatory. Well how about their movements - notice that they are basically walking around backwards doing the Limbo dance? Love the SWERY style! Having production location reference photos and the ability to watch all the cut scenes and listen to all the music once you finish it is great. They packed a surprising amount of content on there.
Its definately a game I will return to throughout the years and definately made me a fan of SWERY. Its awesome finding treasures like this game and this team is today's gaming world.
Thanks to shidoshi and that podcast crew for that SWERY interview. Very interesting stuff and just awesome to hear from him. I ordered SWERY's previous game on ebay today - Spy Fiction. I hear Forest Kaysen is in that game too! This team will be one to watch for. I hope they get some big backing behind them, like a Suda51 or something, one of these days.
Imma top this post off with the best song ever, "Life is Beautiful":
Destro, I totally agree about the ending. I don't think it was meant to be taken literally either. This is all shit that's going on in York's mind and thus you see it from his perspective. I think it's pretty brilliant, and I agree that the story is one of the best of this gen.
Found this cheap at a CD Trader about a month ago and just started playing it yesterday. So many hilarious bits in the first hour! Loving it.
Found it cheap? The game retailed out the gate for 20 bux. But yeah enjoy yourself! One of the best games of all time, seriously.
Hey Geen:
If I don't have this by the time you get tired of it (2 weeks) send it to me. I will pay you.
Just got mine from Gamefly. The shooting controls are dogshit (I didn't like RE5 controls either) but the main character is SO AWESOME, so I'll try to play it anyway.
I don't think anyone ever accused this game of being good, only of being awesome.
Yup.
Single player GOTY 2010. Aint nothing touching this game - probably ever.
Shidoshi just tweeted that there is a Director's Cut of this coming to PS3! I never got to play it on 360, because the domestic version was region locked.
edit: Joystiq picked up the story too.
Argh, seeing this at the top got my hopes up that a sequel was announced. Ah well, good news for PS3 folk. I've been playing through this again on Hard and it really is a terrible, wonderful gem.
Playing it on hard would be so annoying! At least till you found the right unlimited ammo guns.
I don't know if I'd ever want a sequel to this game. So many things could go wrong. I think Swery was blissfully unaware of everything when he made this game. That element would be lost in a sequel. Or it could be even more amazing! Who knows.
Based on some of the interviews I've read with him, his attitude towards making games is basically, "I'm putting in what I want, period." He doesn't seem to have any desire to create something the "right way", just something that interests him personally. His panel at the 2011 GDC was pretty interesting.
I've absolutely no intention of slogging through the game on hard with standard weapons, so I've been doing every side quest I can along the way. It's been long enough since I last played that it's all pretty fresh again.
I started this a while ago with a buddy... and then we just stopped. I really want to get back into it. In the meantime we've been playing Rise of Nightmares.
Coming from you I was expecting a PC port. I am less excited by the actual news.
The actual news was from earlier this year. I was becoming concerned it was going to be one of those silently axed projects, since we hadn't heard anything in over six months.
Rising Star is publishing. Did Ignition die?
Shane is at Sony now. Wasn't he at Ignition?
I haven't played DP (lol) so I'm on this.
I shall purchase this entertainment.
I'll put money down if it's as improved as they say. The story was amazing. The gameplay and graphics less so.
I'm pretty sure the action scenes were forced in by the original publisher. Seems SWERY originally wanted it to be JUST the story and crazy town.
I wish he got his way. :(
This appears to actually exist.
It was definitely worth $20 the first time out, not sure a Directors Cut will warrant $40 several years later.
Charging twice as much, just because.
I think I want to try this.
I preordered on Amazon.
Never played it and always meant to.
This finally comes out tomorrow. It looks like it may be tough to find at retail, as I only see it listed at Amazon and GameStop. However, it's going to be on PSN as well. I'm trying to decide whether I want it physical or digital this afternoon. It would be a net of $18 on Amazon, thanks to some credit, or "free" on PSN with credit card points.
I've started the 360 version 3 separate times now and keep losing interest because of the rubbish controls.
You need a robot and a bear in the game to get you over that hump, huh.
Damn...

Korly nailed it
I can't wait until you find out the game is beyond awful. The story is compelling. watch the GB Quick Look and skip the lame parts.
The bullshit gun action is way simplified and much more forgiving in the PS3 version so you can get back to the main game a lot more quickly. This means my main complaint with the Xbox version is completely addressed.
I'll be buying this as soon as I can.
Yeah, the last time I started this is right around when the PS3 version was announced. Isn't there some preorder bonus that completely negates combat or something?
I want that preorder bonus. Shame I can't afford to be buying silly things at the moment.
I ordered a copy from Amazon. It was $18.48 after credits, and this way if I hate it, or if it becomes hard to find and expensive, I can cash out.
I played this with a friend expecting very little and we ended up laughing our asses off, in a great way. Super fun.

I heard the controls are sort of fixed, which is the worst part of the whole thing. That's the only way I could see it getting anywhere near a 7.
Man, I wish they would release it for PC.
Tuesday's PSN store update did fix the preorder codes, so I'm going to dig into this heavily this weekend.
Son of a bitch. I'm done buying third party console games, since I am tired of winding up buying them twice.
I passed on the PS3 version because I already had the 360 original, but there's no way I can do that on PC. Maybe I can even finish it this time.

The ending is incredible. I'll probably rebuy it on PC just to go through it again with hopefully better controls.
Director's Cut is $5.39 on PSN.
I played through most of Deadly Premonition and loved it. I'm now watching Twin Peaks for the first time ever and halfway through season 2 and I can't believe how much it took from the series! It makes me wanna play it again after I'm finished.
Did they ever patch up the frame rate in the PS3 version? I don't have a working 360 anymore and my PC kind of sucks.
I bought it anyway. The frame rate is worse than my memory of the 360 version. It was an ugly game to begin with so I don't expect it to detract too much from the experience.
I think framerate was at its worst in the PS3 version in the first portion of the game. As you go on, it should get better.
Deadly Premonition: Director's Cut - Classified Edition
They're running out of punctuation to add more titles.
Just got that email too. I guess they want to ride the remaster train without actually having to remaster anything.
"Here's an old game and all its dlc, enjoy!"
I wish I could buy all the extras without the game for ~$20.
