They also said it was greatly improved over the original release, so their basis for good combat and mine already started off with discrepancies. I was also being particularly specific because the two sources for info in this thread are epmode and Yoshi, who both loved the original so I can't trust them to just say it plays well.
Even among Witcher's fans, I've not heard anyone really praise the combat. People are just bothered by it to different extents.
Yoshi said the game was about as close to perfect as it gets, you should talk to him about that. ;)
I just found out this is on GoG, which confuses me. I think I'll get it from them, because they have been so good to me and I almost never get stuff from them for a combination of reasons.
I put a lot more time into this so I'll nitpick the combat for MechDeus.
The combat is unrecognizable from the first game. I love the focus on crowd control and the importance of waiting for an opening (so you can avoid being interrupted by enemy attacks). But that's not to say that the system can't use some tweaking. The big problem is that regular sword strikes will only hit the guy you're targeting so group fights are harder than they should be. You're going to have to use spells and traps to keep the extra enemies off your back.
Which reminds me: Initial skill balance seems off. A few spells and traps are infinitely more useful than others though this might change with tougher enemies or a higher level.
The combat system won't stand up to a dedicated action game but it's a nice improvement over your typical long-form RPG.
And I should probably mention that everything else about the game is goddamned awesome.
The nicest thing I've ever said about the combat in the first game is that I don't despise it. It's obviously not very good but it's easy to overlook.
GOG is owned by CD Projekt, a sister company of the Witcher developers.
