I won't get started on the game until the patch and amd hotfix drivers come out (sometime this week) but I read that people who have the non-GOG version of the game are getting better performance by using the GOG .exe file (and some .dll). Could the DRM used in the other version cause a big performance drop? In any case those who don't have the GOG version should find out more about it and see if it improves things.
I've tried the GOG and Steam files and I can't see any difference at all. But the Steam version doesn't have DRM aside from the usual Steam stuff so I'm not surprised. It might be a different story with the retail SecuROM version
I've also heard that the performance improvement may only happen on SLI setups, not sure if it's true.
My only issue with the game is how the free DLC quest doesn't want to install properly. This is supposedly going to be fixed early this week.
I've heard the same. I'm shocked to see that sort of thing in a modern game with high production values. Most developers are more concerned with making sure that anyone who finishes the game sees all there is to see.Quote:

This game is kind of ruthless. I spent like two days stuck on one boss. Backtracked and geared up a bit and managed to take him down, finally.
Seems like some of the perks on the skill tree will make things more manageable once I get there.
Improved Aard, Quen, and maybe Ydren are good starts, but the talent in the sword tree that makes backstabs do less damage is mandatory.
The Witcher 1 is a good game, but playing through it when you've got TW2 downloaded is rough. I got a few quests deep into the first area of Vizima proper that you can access, and eventually lost my patience. I dived right into TW2 at that point and am having an absolutely wonderful time (god, these environments!). I still feel a little bad that now I might never finish the first game.
So yeah, anyway, I can't think of anything bad to say about this game yet (currently in Flotsam). It's easily the prettiest game ever made as far as I'm concerned. The tech doesn't seem much different from what's in something like Metro 2033, and therefore shows the power of art direction and using rich colors imo.
EDIT: OK if I'm going to find a nitpick then it's the combat. I love it but I wish it was a little more fluid, reaching Assassin's Creed levels. I don't want the controls to be that simplified or the combat to be that easy. I just wish there were ways to deal with crowds effectively via swordplay, rather than magic and rolling. I hear that later on you get the ability to hit multiple opponents with a swing, but that's not really what I'm getting at. It needs to be more responsive to cancelling/redirecting attacks. Right now it's hard to even change targets with 100% reliability and accuracy, much less immediately focus on the new target.
There's a skill you can unlock that let's you attack multiple opponents at once, which helps crowd control, but targetting is definitely the Achille's heel of the combat system.
The other thing is context sensitive attacks that close distance, but the requirements seem really arbitrary. Like, I've parried a blow and whiffed swings on a guy who was literally inches away from the tip of my sword, yet if I happen to target a dude just a little further away Geralt will spin and leap at him for the attack.
Assassin's Creed, to me, absolutely nailed the feel/flow of sword combat. Everything in the fight plays out just like you'd imagine it would in a movie or something, without being heavily scripted. The only problem is that they over simplified/automated it. If we could get the same end result but with gameplay that rewarded skill more, there would be your perfect fighting system for these kinds of games.
That is very true, the combat in AC was amazing except for how fucking easy it was.
