If you're past Vizima, you're in the home stretch. Chapters 4, 5, and the epilogue are collectively like 5-7 hours.
I read the book, way before it became the game, and they were all quality read. Great characters, some awesome action on those pages, and hell, and there are some surprises, as no one is safe, as stories go.
I finally started working on this, and so far got past the prologue stories, and wow, this is freaking beautiful. But jumpy auto lock can eat my dick.
Review. This is now a comment thread.
This really was the best fantasy RPG I've played in a long time. Not quite sure if I like it more than the Mass Effect games, but I'd have to at least think about that for a while.
Done with the first chapter, it's pretty good overall. The voice work is good although whoever did the sound mixing is either new to the field or deaf, people's voices keep getting drowned out by ambient sound effects. One unnamed side character was all but mute during a conversation thanks to loud noises going on in the background, I was unable to understand a single word he said. Some of the more odd terms also get lost in the lack of tutorial, when fighting the Kayren the sorceress kept telling me to use "ear dens" to fight the monster. It wasn't until three deaths that the game popped up a window telling me that "Yrden" was a sign and how to use it. On the flip side of voices, I really love the timed responses during conversations which help keep it at a more natural flow, though I wish they'd do it more.
The writing is really good so far and the characters are wonderfully ambiguous, I've actually had a harder time than I thought I would deciding who to side with and who I should tell to fuck off. The hangover quest was fucking great, I wasn't expecting any of that to happen and the accompanying story was pretty hilarious. The atmosphere is so great and they did a wonderful job with the forest. It's almost annoying how I can barely see anything at times (dark monsters and snare traps just blend right into the shadows) but it's also a very convincing effect so I can't really fault it. The amulet highlighting is nicely integrated but also kind of annoying to spam so I don't use it too much.
The combat system is still fairly half-assed at best but it's way more tolerable than the original's shitfest. The target locking is probably the worst implementation of such that has ever been seen in videogames, there at least needs to be an option for the camera to cooperate with it. Even with multiple enemy striking ability the sword fighting just feels way too tuned for one-on-one, and the way enemies gang up and alternate attacks is almost too smart for the limited knockback/recoil system that's offered. Riposte also seems to have the tiniest possible window to activate, I need to experiment a little more with it but I feel like I've only got one or two frames to pull it off. So yeah, it's okay but they really need to finally learn how to use hitboxes properly.
I once died because one of those spider queen things got into a scuffle with a wandering elf and right at the end both of their AIs just locked up and they stood totally still staring at each other. After a few seconds I went up and stabbed the elf in the back, but this also somehow absorbed all of his equipment into my inventory and the spider queen killed me because I was then over encumbered and couldn't dodge. I laughed, but I was also sad inside.
I'm happy at the latest patch as it fixed the one controller problem in the menus (the attributes page was hyper-sensitive and nothing could be selected properly) but it also disabled the use of the analog sticks in the menus so the journals entries can't be scrolled down. I also ran into the troll head bug but thankfully someone made a mod to correct that, hooray for easy item scripting!
Shit, that was quite a wall of text.
The combat is half-assed compared to God of War or Devil May Cry, but honestly, it's a lot more fun than most fantasy RPGs. It's challenging, and you can't really button mash through it, but it lends a real feeling of agility that most RPGs don't have.
Riposte is super easy. The visible window isn't the actual window. Just hold block and mash attack.
More like it's half-assed even compared to Zelda or Fable. It's annoying to be facing three guys and if I swing and hit all three then it splits them up and they can all just immediately attack from different directions. This gets even more annoying when fighting wraiths because they can just absorb all the damage from an attack and strike at the same time, effectively being invincible with no way to fight against that.Quote:

Good to see that idiot stumbled onto both useful things he's done through no fault of his own.
I'm convinced the Letho fight is impossible on Hard. The Kayran was bad, but Letho is just bullshit. His Aard cancels my Quen, but not the other way around. And he can do this bullshit juggle where the Aard knocks you back, and he throws bombs and Igni at me that I can't escape. And it's like three hits to death.
edit: I guess taking a minute to bitch here calmed me down enough to get lucky, er, win. They mean "Hard" when they say it. Insane can blow me.
