Official PlayStation Portable Thread

TNL search sucks balls. If there wasn't an official thread, there was definitely discussion. I recall a few of the hardcore crowd here were happy with it, but most weren't.

I have been searching for a complete KitN for DS (with soundtrack) but have not been successful. SSJN?

I am positive it will appeal to your aesthetic preferences--beautiful, 2D, hand-drawn pixel art. Many of the backgrounds are lush and detailed. The game itself isn't for everyone--purposefully complex, even circuitous. The tutorial is massive and necessary. If you have patience and are willing to invest some time into the game, I think it'll pay off. I imagine for my own preferences that I'd go with the DS version, though, if only because the wisp control with the stylus was seamless.

Slow n Hardcore. I didn't finish it but I'd buy it for the PSP just to see it on a clearer screen.

I keep reading it compared to a cross between a shooter and an SRPG. How is that possible? Is that the wisp stuff?

Got Knights in the Nightmare (+ artbook) in the mail today. Weird game. I wish Sting would distill their games into more basic concepts a bit. Even after taking 15 damn tutorials to start with, there's numbers and gauges all over the screen that have no clear purpose, and the mid-chapter unit management has like 10 menu items that go into all sorts of convoluted submenus with unexplained weapon/unit combining and stat pages with numbers out the butt for attributes that aren't even clear on what their abbreviations stand for. The gameplay is unique and interesting but I feel like it would be a lot more enjoyable if they stripped away all that goddamn clutter.

KoF: The only extra copy I have is beat up but new. I preordered from amazon to get the art book, but the copy they sent me was all crushed on the corners and the plastic seal on one side of the box was pealed back. Game inside is still sealed though. Anyhow, I bought another new copy so I could have an undamaged one.

The permanence that permeates every facet of the game gives each action an invigorating sense of urgency. Vitality recovers minimally upon leveling up and at no other time. A defeated ally can not be revived. Items lose durability points each turn and will eventually break if not upkept. Each stage (and often, individual turns within a stage) offers a unique item set for which second opportunities are not affored. There's a heavy emphasis on permanently sacrificing troops to increase the level caps and boost the vitality of your more favored knights.

I've amassed a deep roster of characters and a healthy cache of weapons despite averaging around 70% item completion per stage, so there's no tinge of "Fuck, I should start over," regret that can occasionally spoil a Fire Emblem game. All of the missable content is less intended to pad playtime for compulsive completionists and more to make each playthrough unique.

Seriously, this game is fucking awesome. Two genres that seem to evolve every single year, STGs and SRPGs, rolled into a quarter-sized DS cart. The story sequences are succinct but adequate, and there's even an option selectable from the title screen called Leveling Up seemingly designed for a poo session: you can replay any of the stages you've cleared with troop and item sets dictated by the game. The restrictions on both make the replays interesting and also spare you from expending weapons and troops reserved for story battles. Conveniently, you're allowed to carry all gained experience, items, and materials from this mode into your main save. Pretty ingenious.

Yuck. So TNL is pretty split. And October 19 is an insane release day (Fallout: New Vegas, Vanquish, and possibly Castlevania: Lord of Shadows). I wonder if my Blockbuster has the DS version to rent. I doubt I am that lucky.

This game is extremely unique. It deserves a second look.

Cladun: This is an RPG is out today. DD only. Unless it's super cheap, I prefer the UMD. Also NIS(A) kinda sucks sometimes (Holy Invasion), so I'll wait for impressions/price drop.
