Advice: go through your business cards, find one you like, copy the layout shamelessly.
Josh is right, those are fucking horrific.
What Yeller said: look at card designs you like and use those as jumping points.
?
Jesus christ. Business cards need to be simple.
For photographers it isn't unheard of to have photos of their past work on their business cards.
But if I were you, Brian, I'd choose a good photo.
Photo on back, normal boring business card on the front. That is how I would do it.
yep yep
I would take Yellerdog's advice. Don't put a big photo in the layout unless it looks really cool. It's not the optimum environment for you to be displaying your photos for the most part - unless you know of a photo that would look really awesome in the format (and you can experiment with it) simple is usually better. Your contact info is the prime focus of any business card.
Double sided, as Mman suggested, would also be a good way to do it. Costs a bit more but looks much more professional. Especially in such an aesthetically-driven profession.
Go with the bike, have the back be white + readable black text (not your "logo"). Bam!
Get rid of the weird borders, I'd say. The dude is flying free against a limitless sky. Why put him in a box?
LOL! I knew the bike was cool! It grabs your attention!
I say get a professional to take the photo. That way it looks good.
Harsh!
The boarders are the template bleed and cut off lines so don't mind them.
The deal I am getting is double sided full color, I am going to try and see if I can get all 6 printed, if not, maybe two of those front and back? Two contrasting photos?
I'm sorry, but the Lady Gaga and Wedding ones both suck ass. Don't waste your money on them. Stick with the Bike and b/w car and maybe the RockStar one for LA clients only. Outside of SoCal this card will come off looking like an asshole, but in LA you have to be arrogant to get anywhere.
Wait am I off base?? That is you right?
And LOL@ Equal Opportunity Employer and Who Ate My Food?
Yeah that's me, and those are my short videos.
The lego sprite is cute, but there's nothing going on with the lighting and the colors are flat and boring. It doesn't really scream, Hey this guy can work a camera! like 3, 4, and 5 do. 1 and 6 aren't flattering to the subjects, either. It's cool to say Hey! I photographed Lady Gaga, but as interesting of a person she is, here she's just kind of standing there like a knob.
If someone handed me a business card with white text on a white background, I'd spit on it and hand it back to them.
Just saying...
And put something besides your website on it, jerk. I don't want to go look through your god damn website to get you to take pictures of my niece's birthday party.
I hate to hark on this, but club photos of stars can be a really great selling point and all of your gaga pics don't really do it for me. They're just not dramatic enough for someone who wears police tape and Red Vines for dresses.
Out of the three you have up, I think this one is the best. However, I would have used a slightly longer lens to blow out the background.
EDIT: Let's put it this way. You are not a rockstar; yet you're strangling yourself with a mic, while jerking off-camera, smoking an electric cigarette and wearing shades to hide your bloodshot eyes.
Lady Gaga on the other hand... is half-ass waving to the crowd.
Damn Skippy!
I just called, they cant do multi-template prints, so basically i can choose two of those for print on each side.
I am thinking the BW Car and Legoman, or BW Car and Rockstar picture. Or any other suggestions? I think that the contrast between the sides would be best, and while the motocross and BW car would be eye catching, they dont really sell the fact i also do fashion/promotional work with people.
I think either one of those would be good - Legoman has more color, but the rockstar pic would go toward a fashion market. I'd do like Josh said and swap out the website for a phone number on one side, though.
I don't like any of them. And I'm not trolling. None of the stuff I've posted in this thread has been solely for the lulz. None of those designs work as a business card. Don't fall in love with your first draft...
Your portfolio belongs on your website, not your business card. An attractive layout works better than a wallet sized photo with text thrown haphazardly on top of it.
Also... the cut lines are NEVER pixel perfect... so allow yourself some space for error.
I'm not at work so I can be a little more in-depth:
In order for them to run separate prints they have to take everything off-press and set it up again. Set up is 80% of the cost in most print runs. If you're going to do 1 then use the bike in the air on the front (or whatever is your most popular photography style. If you book a lot of weddings then put weddings. If you WANT to do more concerts then put the concerts on there instead) and on the reverse print your contact information neatly. If your photos are vertical try doing an entire layout vertically instead of the traditional horizontal style. Do not print the same thing or two big photos on either side of the card with just your name and URL. It's functionally bad design. Don't waste both sides without putting your contact info on the card. Me, personally, I wouldn't put a photo on the card at all unless it really grabbed peoples attention or spoke to your style (which is your brand). You don't seem to have a distinctive style or genre, yet.
Josh is right. You're making people do an extra step to be able to contact you directly (by making them go to your website). Put your contact info on one side and keep the fancy schmancy stuff to the other. NAME, WHAT YOU DO > PHONE NUMBER, E-MAIL ADDRESS > WEBSITE URL, FACEBOOK, TWITTER, ETC.
What if he crops a horizontal strip from each of the six photos and stacks them up to create a vertical bar on the left third side of the card (leaving some white space to the left), then his name and contact info right-justfied in black serifed text centered on the right??
That should shut-up Josh, leave negative space on the card and still get some color and an idea of his work on the card!
Number and email were still going to make it in, those were still general designs.
Ill keep screwing with things and post some more updated ones later, gotta make my train
To me it feels a little bit confined and shows a lack of confidence in your work to shotgun EVERYTHING on the card, especially since it's such an eclectic mix of photos he has to choose from. I'm also wary of the stacked box look in general. But that would be a way to go one sided. The best looking business cards are focused, though. I do split cards 50/50 if I have to, but my natural instinct is to use both sides.
Good photography shouldn't need a lot of design to sell itself. If anything it gets in the way of the photo itself. Also don't used a serifed font if the rest of your site is sans-serif. Keep it consistent.
Seriously, if you're going to insist on having a photo, only put it on one side and have the other side basic with all of your contact info.
Word. If you're gonna do two-sided, use the other for info (and as worrisome as it can be, do leave more info - e-mail at least, phone possibly, no need for st addy).
I do like how you have the type laid out for your name a site though. Maybe pull that look to the back? And if you have full color double sided, don't feel pressured into using as much stuff as possible. Maybe do your name/contact on the back in a two color solution - better than plain b&w while still staying clean and attractive.
Hey B-Ri, could I highjack this thread? I have a card layout I'm working on and wanted some feedback, didn't want to make a new thread if it can fit here.
go for it.
BAM.
Who's next?
haha, brillant! No need for mine now!
(although I won't get to show mine til I get home tonight)
That grey is screened back pretty hard. Might be tricky or non-existent when ink hits paper.
Here's what I have for a new design. I like it but feel like it could be better...
I hate that peach colour.
I use a little dude for my "brand" too (kind of looks like me a little bit). Don't know if it will at all help, but I always integrate him in to the layout somehow:
That's a thick wang.
Had to stay true to life and scale.
lol
Drew has penis legs?
Electric cigarettes are amazing. You can get THC cartridges and high as fuck with them in public without getting hassled. Not a huge issue up here in the great white, but in America that would alone be a good reason to carry it.
