Never change.
I liked Shattered Memories a lot when it wasn't bogging me down with those awful chase bits. I actually feel like that game came closer to the Silent Hill "feel" than any other that wasn't developed by Team Silent. A lot of the memories you'd observe (the dead nude girl in the woods, the hunter and his "queer" son) were almost shockingly grim and depressing. The same goes for the re-imagined characters. I'm not sure why, but I found the pathetic little existence Harry and Dahlia seemed to have especially sad. The therapy sessions were rather interesting too, and I liked that your answers would alter the game in both subtle and obvious ways. A lot of good ideas there, but unfortunately they were overshadowed by some appallingly bad ones.
Shattered Memories was a fantastic idea created by people who had no idea how to really execute said idea. The chase scenes were god-awful, and the rest of the game could neither do puzzles nor character-based drama well enough to have either carry the game.
I'm with shidoshi on that. I still own the damn game but can't bring myself to finish it. Nice choice of platforms too.
Shattered Memories HD with Move support maybe??

In short, wait for it to hit the bargain bin (maybe) and Akira Yamaoka is missed.
Score-wise, those reviews don't exactly scream "AVOID."
...except IGN's.
I read some Downpour reviews and people seemed to think it was atmospheric and absorbing, with clunky mechanics.
Like every other Silent Hill really.
I am utterly baffled by how much I'm liking Downpour. Does it have elements that are broken and stupid and which shouldn't be in a game from such a major publisher? Absolutely. And yet—this is probably the most I've enjoyed a SH game since SH2.
I never, ever expected to be thinking this way.
