It wasn't an open field. There were trees around. He could have popped out of behind one.

It looks like an open field to me.
And what was he even doing out there in the middle of the night? It's like the writers stopped even trying to find reasons for characters to be places, they just think "We want something to happen to this character and the character goes "I have to go walk purposelessly into danger now" and does.
Zombies don't "sneak".
Stop defending this show.
I mean. It's believable. "Oh I've been on this farm forever and we've hardly seen zombies except for the ones brought in by Otis. I can go for a wal...wait, what's that sound? What is that? Let me TAKE MY GUN OUT (which he did) IN CASE THERE'S A PROBLEM." If he were younger or had something other than a rifle he would have been able to fight back. You guys are trying to find any fucking excuse to shit on this show.
If you don't watch it, get out of this thread. Easy as that.
I'm just telling you what happened. I wasn't looking for faults. I was just enjoying tv drama.
So he was out there specifically to look for zombies?
Hilarious.
What else is he going to be on the look out for during his night watch in a zombie apocalypse? Unicorns? You look around when you're on watch, that's the whole idea. How is that hard to believe? He was within eye sight of the house, on the property when he hears noises. Hearing something (and being armed) he approached it to see what it is. The alarming sight and sounds in front of him distracted him. His slow ass got jumped and he payed for it (also: smooth moves in the woods Carl!).
