Not that it wasn't obvious before but this really reeks of 'Let's sell as many as possible before the Vita hits". With the huge price difference between the original DS and PSP they had a great game plan to take advantage of their much weaker system. Both the 3DS and Vita being priced at $250 would have surely gotten Nintendo into a situation since, once again, it looks like Sony has the much better technical machine. The 3D gimmick (that's right, I said it) was/is only going to get Nintendo so far. Though this does suck for early adopters, what other choice did they have?

I'm a little concerned these first and second party games may be rushed for that reason as well. I can't imagine the original plan was to launch Zelda, Star Fox, Mario, Mario Kart, and Kid Icarus in the second half of this year. What the hell is left for 2012 now from Nintendo, besides Luigi's Mansion 2? As long as the quality of the 2011 lineup doesn't suffer, I'd rather have them earlier, but it's somewhat worrying. 2012 is looking like LM2, RE, and nothing else at least that's been shown in any detail.

Fuck. I'll have to hide that game's existence from the females of my household.
edit: Nintendo cut their profit forecast by 82% based in part on this decision.
-
I wish they didn't cut MML3. Between that and the whole "there are no games I want to play on this system, virtual console or otherwise", I feel pretty good about skipping it.

I cannot wait to do to you with Contra 5 what you did to me with Contra 4.
-
Yoshi... there will be no Contra 5 on the 3DS.

We shall see.
It looks as though Nintendo has to worry about more than the Vita as well. Gameloft is releasing 3D versions of their mobile titles. I'd need new shorts if the iPhone 5 has 3D.

I was actually wondering yesterday if there would be a price drop when I opened Gamestop's website and realized the 3DS was the most expensive system on the market:
