My previous post has been edited to include packaging for both New 3DS and New 3DS LL models, and yes, the latter unfortunately isn't as stylish.
It really is a terrible decision to not have faceplaces available on the LL. I wonder what the official answer would be for the question 'why', and what the actual reason is.

Is the Amiibo functionality not going to work with the regular 3DS's, or is it just built in to the new ones?

I don't think there is anything I give a damn about on 3DS that uses them though.
edit: Apparently it's only the Wii U Smash Bros., so even games I don't give a damn about don't use them on 3DS.
