Fourth Crystal Dynamics Tomb Raider

It appears the Guardian of Light is the only Lara Croft game we will be getting in the near future. :cry:

According to Eurogamer's anonymous source, the new game is in development for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC. Additionally, earlier this week, ex-Crystal Dynamics artist Joel Boucquemont posted Tomb Raider concept art on his personal website (one piece shown above), and this anonymous source confirmed that at least some of it does relate to the new Tomb Raider in development. The source also claims that Crystal Dynamics has wrapped up work on Guardian of Light, and all their focus is now on this new entry in the proper Tomb Raider series.

Besides all that, though, it looks like the source didn't have many other details on this new game, including any gameplay details or even confirmation of what it'll be titled. Last year, documents from a consumer survey leaked details on one concept for a Tomb Raider reboot starring a younger and inexperienced Lara Croft, but with so much time having gone by, it's impossible to say how much (if any) of those earlier details will actually make it into the new game.

And again, considering this game (and let's clarify that even its existence is still unconfirmed by Crystal Dynamics) is reportedly planned for release late next year, it could be a while before we hear anything more about it.

2011 is really starting to shape up already.

I liked Legend and Anniversary. Have yet to play Underworld.

This is one of those franchises where they should just say "Okay, that's about all of this thing that people could have wanted."

Put it in the cupboard, take it out for a prettier version maybe once per gen, then put it back.

I didn't really care for Legend. I mean, it was a good game but it just didn't really seem too much like a TR to me. Anniversary was a great remake with the exception of the T-Rex part. Underworld was an excellent entry to the series. It captured everything that I loved about TR 1 and is probably the only other game in the series that I think is actually as good as it. I've never been a fan of the "combat with other human" heavy TR games. I like being lost in a huge area with nature's beasts being the only real threat for the majority of the game.

Don't pouty face that we're not getting a new one every year. You know damned well that's what nearly killed the series in the first place. Have we learned nothing?

I like the current plan with the action game this year and the traditional Tomb Raider next.

Underworld's the only one I haven't played and this comment makes me want to remedy the situation. Sad how I've played through every single game just trying to recapture the magic of the first one, and have always come away disappointed (albeit to different degrees).

I loved Underworld but I wouldn't go in expecting it to be just like TR1 with better graphics and control. It does recapture a lot of what made the original great and is must-play for fans but it still seemed more linear/less exploratory to me. For better or worse, it's easier to get lost in TR1.

I still need to play 4, 5, and Angel of the original series (yes I know they are probably horrible, this is what I do).

I liked Legends enough and reading the praise for Underworld makes me want to try it out pretty bad now. Shit.

Tomb Raider: The Last Revelation (4) was actually pretty good. It seemed like they were trying to go back more towards the original. I didn't think it was great but I liked it more than 2 or 3.

Same. TR's one of those series where I will play every game regardless of quality. I even recommend Angel of Darkness for lulz if nothing else. Even though it's unarguably awful, I still got some enjoyment out of it.

4 and 5 were both good I thought.

So this next one is just called "Tomb Raider" and is an origin story that apparently ignores the origin stories of Chronicles. Yay for more reboots. (Not really.)

Make it play like Uncharted instead of the blocky grid movement of past gmes and I'll be happy. The newer ones were better but still didn't have the flow of the Uncharted games.

By my count (note: did not count) there have been about 200 Tomb Raider origin games. Plus it's gotten to the point where I am more likely to ignore a game if it comes with the reboot sales pitch. This announcement couldn't have been more boring if they tried.

Yea but they were good movies. Look, the only reason PR flacks say their new thisorthat is "dark and gritty" is because there's a bunch of people out there that think that means it will be better. It means nothing. Shit, I read a preview of Halo: Reach in EDGE that said that. Is it? Maybe, but it's still a terrible game.

Also, I'm not sure Square called this dark and gritty, I just called her design gritty. Which it is, but we'll see if that translates into other good decisions. It probably won't

I think Crystal Dynamics has done pretty much all they can with the current incarnation of Lara. I'm all for a reboot.

I liked the redesign of Lara when they released Legend, and I'm liking this design even more than that.
Even though I thought Underworld was good (and do want to actually finish it within the next six months), I'm happy to hear that if they're going to continue with this series that they're giving it another overhaul. I don't think I'd be as interested if it was just more Legend/Anniversary/Underworld.

Maybe new Lara and new Dante will hook up in a reboot crossover. They can have dark & gritty sex in monochrome locations and have emo babies.

I'm actually hoping this turns out well, by the way. Crystal Dynamics always seems like a developer on the verge of doing something excellent, but seems stuck at "pretty good".

My copy of this came in the mail today and the art design of every in game shot is just top fucking notch. She really looks like that in game.

Sadly there's really not enough to go on in terms of if this will actually be fun to play.

I'm so hot for this game. Seriously. Utterly love the new Lara's look, and very excited by the idea that the game could be an interesting mix of exploration and survival. I was a big fan of the original game, so I'd love a return to the adventurous feeling of those early days.

And, you know, I'm a sucker for the "dark and gritty more realistic" thing with certain franchises. Oh, and no more balloon boobs and slut outfit!

Agreed on all counts. I really hope it's an isolated, big adventure with few NPCs.

Definitely looking forward to this game. I personally think TR: Anniversary is the best of the CD Tomb Raider games and hope this new game turns out well. I like Lara's new look too.
