I was d/l'ing the new Matt Smith episodes as they happened, good times! I really enjoyed the 2010 season a lot.
The only real misstep were the Lizard People episodes. They looked cool, but the plot had holes you could drive a truck through.
I kind of think River Song sucks and they should drop that plotline, but that's a different issue.
The new companion (Amy Pond) is crazy-cute.
Amy is indeed crazy-cute but she's been my least favorite of the new companions by far. I just don't give a shit about her slutty ass so far (only gotten to the 2nd lizard people episode).
I couldn't goddamn stand Catherine Tate so I'm not with ya on that one.
Working my way through some of the old stuff, "The Talons of Weng-Chiang" at the moment. Love them crazy Tom Baker eyes. I like how they call all the Chinese people "celestials", feels like I'm watching Deadwood.
"The Next Doctor" and "Planet of the Dead," which follow the 2008 season, are streamable, but the next two rounding out Tennant's tenure aren't as of yet. There's also a number of episodes streamable from the old show as well, including those penned by Douglas Adams, and at least one of every different Doctor (minus the American movie Doctor).
She is attractive.
Yeller was telling me to make sure I catch the Christmas specials in between the seasons, which aren't on instant watch.
Well I didn't watch all of it, but after Eccleston takes in the time power from Rose, and he regenerates into Tennant, the very next episode has him falling out of the Tardis in current day(for the show) and Jackie and Mickey are waiting. He has on the jumper and leather jacket like he is still Eccleston.
Were there Santas?
There's gonna be Santas, and that makes that the Christmas episode. I think Netflix calls it the first episode of season 2.
P.S.:
This fits between season 1 and the Christmas episode(/season 2): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZY1kERSmLXs
This fits between season 3 and the Christmas episode(/season 4): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x0cyxb2kG9E but you may want to watch http://www.netflix.com/Movie/Doctor_...0&trkid=222336 first.
The episode was called The Christmas Invasion, so I'm assuming it's the Christmas ep.
Incorrect! They're little ten five minute one-offs that connect the seasons that the BBC likes to air as part of its holiday charity fundraiser what-not.
They're bonus features on the DVD, and due to their nature don't show up on BBC America repeats.
2006 - links "The Parting of the Ways" and "The Christmas Invasion"
2007 - links "Last of the Time Lords" and "Voyage of the Damned"
The last couple years have been finale previews. New one coming out this Christmas, though! (I think Sarah Jane Adventures has done one as well, but no one watches that)
"Curse of the Fatal Death" was pretty good, IIRC! (
Well... I've never heard them referred to as "Christmas specials" before, but whatever. I think the Christmas episodes, like "The Christmas Invasion," are more considered to be Christmas specials. Semantics; we both sent him to the same mini-episodes.
Yeah I'm a Donna fan. I think she's been my favorite of the new series as well.
New Doctor was okay, but some of the writting seems lacking, still the whole dynamic between Rory, Amy, and the Doctor might be fun to explore.
Matt Smith spins a lot.
I liked the most current season enough but only after all the episodes were shown, to show how it all integrated.
1:16 made me lol hard.
Two episodes in and Davin Tennant is completely different, but a good different.
He's way more goofy than Eccleston, but not annoying goofy.
Tennant gets way darker than Eccleston as well. Wait till you get to the double episodes with The Family and you'll see.
I'm sort of like Chux and taking the Doctor Who dive now that I can just stream it all on Netflix. Season 3 was on when I was england and the toys where eeeeverywhere, so I've seen a scant few Tennant episodes here and there but never really committed that much. So I'm going back to Eccleston, who I have seen less of, and watching all of it to earn my nerd merit badge.
For some reason I have seen the second episode of the first series like 5 times. I feel like it's all they played on BBC America for a spell.
I felt Tennant was much better than that invisible fuck from Heroes. Dr. Who is kind of great and kind of awful at the same time. The eps are really brilliant or dumb and boring with very few falling in between. Haven't seen the new doctor yet, but I'm glad the head writer is gone since most of his shit was bleah.
Donna can eat shit, she's ugly and stupid. It's all about Martha Jones.
Go the extra mile and watch some Touchwood for man on man action in nearly every episode.
DID YOU KNOW THAT JOHN BARROWMAN IS GAY????
Golly, you've cracked The Code. Same is true of every single thing to come out of England, really.
(my favorite thing about the BBC is how they decided to film everything on video at some point in the early, early 80's and proceeded not to buy a better camera for twenty years)
Haha that was great, thanks for posting.
Some interesting stuff on Wikipedia about it, notably "...it serves as a production - if not narrative - bridge between the 1963 and 2005 versions of the programme. Most notable amongst the many connections between "old" and "new" versions is the fact that it showcases the first televised Doctor Who script by Steven Moffat, the first post-production work of The Mill on the programme, the only time a woman produced an episode of the programme between Verity Lambert and Susie Liggat, and the final performance by the longest-serving Dalek vocal artist, Roy Skelton."
It reminds me of old Christmas videos my parents would take in the 80's.
I'm with the Donna fans. I was just happy to have a run where there wasn't some "I want to bone the Doctor but the Doctor won't bone me" undertone. Even now with Amy, at least it's done in a funny way. Martha was just sad.
I did what Chux is doing sometime after the third season, getting suckered in by someone showing me Blink and going back to the start catch up. Eccleston was cool, loved Tennant but Davies (the old show runner/head writer) needed to go. The last Tennant episode was one of the worst things I've ever watched. Really. Half the shit in part 1 just seemed like a random pile of loosely related scenes where a bunch of WTF was going on and in part 2 the Doctor just turns into a whiny bitch. The guy deserved better for his last run imo and the whole thing nearly made me quit watching but I figured I'd give Moffat a chance.
Holy shit, season 5 was pretty good, huh? It has its low points and as someone else said it's definitely to be watched as a whole instead of being able to just pick out solid, stand alone episodes. Actually using the time travel aspect for more than just establishing the setting is never a bad thing. I won't talk too much about it to avoid spoiling shit for those catching up but you'll enjoy it.
Also, Matt Smith pulled it off. When I first saw who it was going to be I was even more tempted to stop watching. He's not my favorite but he made me shut up about the choice and go along with it.
Matt Smith's Doctor is really fun to watch, I could easily see him becoming one of my favorites. The latest season was good, although there was a stretch of boring episodes starting with the lizard people that dragged it down a notch. I LOVED the last two episodes, especially how different they were from one another while continuing the same story. Part one with the big monster round up and part two with just the core cast. The upcoming Christmas special share the same writer/director team so I've high hopes for that as well.
Has anyone ever checked out the audio plays?
I've heard some of the older ones, it might be the ideal format for Doctor Who. Often the same voices as the television show, none of the questionable production values!
Alright, I just picked up a collection of the Eighth Doctor CDs. I feel like that actor got the shaft haha.
I dunno, they kept his character going for a loooooong time even though he only got to be in what, one movie?
Yeah, one movie. I thought he was decent, and the fact they kept him going so long in audio stuff makes me want to check some of it out.
The audio book think is kind of a slippery slope, you've got companion spinoff series' getting spinoffs.
Anyone here actually watch any of the Sarah Jane Adventures?
Matt Smith has a huge forehead, it bothers me. He's pretty okay, and I like how he delivers the line "bow ties are cool." Pretty good season so far, but it still doesn't feel right. I also hated Donna in the Bride movie, but as a companion she was actually pretty damn awesome.
I would watch Sarah Jane if it were on Netflix. I'm sure it's terrible but who knows.
It's written for very small children. Like, reads the backup features in Ranger Rick magazine-age.
I should watch this show. Every time the thread pops up, I think someone's trying to get a dig on me.
I totally agree and that's basically my main disappiontment with Amy overall. I'm fucking tired of that shit. My only problem with Donna is that I kept focussing on her damned mole. Someone really should have applied some make up to that thing.Quote:

She bought The Five Doctors, which is the only thing I've seen of 5. Davison seems OK but I'd like to see something else of his to really determine how well he plays the role. The episode itself was good enough but it felt a bit strained to try to have so many characters and concepts be integrated into a single show. A lone Dalek brought in because, well, who fucking knows really. It's a good thing there's this paved road which nobody else on Gallifrey uses so that 3 can drive Bessie. Bleah.
We rented The Two Doctors to get a sample of 6. As expected and reported, the writers and producers of the show at this point were just smoking rails of crack each day and the decisions as far as what 6 should look like and say are baffling. It really struck me as odd how some random guy which was given a few lines ultimately was there to be killed by a single knife-stab to the gut, spewing Shakespeare as he expired. What the hell was that about? Was that necessary? All that being said, I think Colin performed the part which was given to him well, as far as I can tell.
The next disc to come in was Remembrance of the Daleks to see 7. Most of the comments which I just stated regarding 6 mostly apply here, though at least Sylvester is easier on the eyes. Ace is one of the best companions ever, and I can at least appreciate how 7 is portrayed for his contemplative process. But the overall plot and writing of this particular episode was pretty much crap. At least, what seemed to be the most lacking part of this episode is how the show generally does a good job of giving an initial opening of showing how "things on this place we just landed aren't correct nor are what they seem to be" and I didn't get that sense at all with this episode. The only part where it shows Doctor going through the process of trying to determine what the hell is going on is within the first few minutes, and right from that he enters the Ordinary Van With Scanning Equipment that he was just previously standing on and gets answers to questions immediately before the person inside bothers to even ask who he is. The remaining 90% of the story is 7 versus the Dalek enemies, with barely any amount of feeling like the presence of Daleks is the catastrophic event which it usually is.
Next we rented City of Death to see 4. This is the first time I've seen Tom Baker's Doctor and after growing up unaware of this show other than being "that show with that scarf guy" and coming to hear how he's generally the most beloved actor to take the role I was holding my breath for something unextraordinary and for the hype to far exceed what the actual performance was. In the end I was surprised that I did find 4 to be quite well played and written. His actions and lines were given in a very snappy pace which I appreciated. I also liked that Romana was a useful companion who actually did things other than get in harm's way. Unforutnately the episode itself was somewhat stupid as far as I could tell. An explosion which a guy deliberately initiates in his ship causes him to co-exist in various places of time on Earth and his ultimate plan is to reverse time so that he change his decision to blow up the ship. OK. To do this, however, the guy's plan is to have Da Vinci make several copies of the Mona Lisa so that eventually he can steal the remaining Mona Lisa which is in the Lourve in the 1970s so that he can sell them all underground so that he can have enough money to buy enough power supply equipment to power the machine to propel him back in time. What? Hey, dumbass - how about you use your several selves to ensure that you either invent or co-develop the devices you can use to do the same thing and not worry about having to sell counterfeit art to purchase the devices?
So by this point, while I wasn't exactly disappointed by any particular actor's take on the Doctor I was growing weary of the show, and that's mostly because of the writing in general.
This brings us to our most recent rental of The Invasion to see 2. This was very refreshing and something which I think has not aged poorly at all. Story starts out with things seeming to be mysterious and draws the Doctor to investigate, which makes us wonder about what's going to be discovered? Check. Clever exchanges of incidental lines and timing to give some humor? Check. Meeting with a villian who isn't initially presented as being overtly sinister or grotesque? Check. Doctor takes time to deduce things and investigate circumstances? Check. A real sense of imminient danger permeates the show when the enemies start to make their moves? Check. A companion does something useful to fight against the enemies? Check. I think Terrance Dicks is right in saying that having an 8-part serial does make it get long in the tooth but overall I thought that this was really well done. Their solution to animate episodes 1 and 4 using the original audio because the original shows were lost was something I really liked too. I found that the stark black and white contrasts and art style helped lend to the air of mystery which the show was presenting. Meanwhile, Troughton's performance was great, giving the Doctor a good range of emotion, shrewdness, and occasional instances of silliness (his vaunting for the photographer lass towards the end was hilarious). If you're going to watch any of the old stuff this is one of the first stories which I would recommend.
All that's left for us to see is 1 and 3, and the movie for 8 which she says is stored away somewhere.
Do you not have Netflix?
I do. Any reference in the prior post to rental was through NetFlix.
Well, if you want to knock off 1 and 3 in one sitting, "The Three Doctors" is 1-3. I agree with you on Troughton, he's fantastic. Unfortunately a lot of the real old stuff, his included, are simply lost or destroyed. The first Doctor is a bore, but "The Aztecs" is generally considered to be one of his best. The third Doctor's first adventure is "Spearhead from Space," he spends most of his tenure stuck on earth playing Inspector Gadget to aliens, and this sets up that run. The eighth Doctor's one story is the movie, it's arguably a terrible film but the American take is on the show is a welcome change of pace if you're tackling them marathon style as you are. Give the fifth doctor another chance by watching "Caves of Androzani," one of the best regeneration/death stories out of the series.
You're totally wrong about City of Death, by the way. That episode is completely hilarious.

With the sound of Doctor Who Season 5 finale "The Big Bang" still ringing in our ears, the BBC isn't resting on its laurels, revealing first details of the show's 2010 Christmas Special.
While the episode's title is still under wraps, the BBC is promising a clever twist on festive classic A Christmas Carol, with time-travelling newlyweds Amy Pond (Karen Gillan) and Rory Williams (Arthur Darvill) joining Matt Smith's Doctor alongside special guests Michael Gambon and opera singer Katherine Jenkins, in her first acting role.
With filming for the Christmas special starting today, showrunner Steven Moffat enthused, "Oh, we're going for broke with this one. It's all your favourite Christmas movies at once, in an hour, with monsters and the Doctor and a honeymoon and – oh, you'll see. I've honestly never been so excited about writing anything. I was laughing madly as I typed along to Christmas songs in April. My neighbours loved it so much they all moved away and set up a website demanding my execution. But I'm fairly sure they did it ironically."
There's no confirmed air date for the Doctor Who Christmas Special as yet, but if recent years are any indication, expect to be settling down in front of the TV post-turkey and pud on Christmas Day, in the UK at least.
Oh man, the end of season 2 was such a downer. Heart wrenching shit.
I grew up with Tom Baker. I still like him, althrough he can be a little too goofy and retarded sometimes.
Tennant was maybe one of the best ever, for the most part, except here and there he'd get a little too bug-eyed and goofy ala Baker.
The dude before Tennant, the guy from 28 Days Later, was fine from what I remember. Didn't really watch that season.
Never saw Doctor #3, except in The Five Doctors. He seemed cool enough. Never saw a Doctor #1 episode, either.
Saw one episode of Doctor #7, "Silver Nemesis." Didn't like him.
Peter Davidson was very solid (Earthshock is the fucking shit).
Colin Baker as Doctor #6 was a suprise. Aside looking like a gay Ronald McDonald, he was really good and edgy (the episode I saw him in was Attack of the Cybermen).
And I agree with dog$ that Troughton was amazing as Doctor #2...I've gone off on this major Cyberman kick lately (my Cyberman action figure collection is growing pretty epic) and have been buying all the stories released on DVD cheap off of ebay. Anyway, I got Tomb of the Cybermen, and it is just plain ass-kickingly great. Slow to build, but it's all atmosphere and tension, and when the Cybermen (along with the infamous Cyber Controller) finally show up, it just sends that shit over the edge. But the even bigger suprise for me was how fucking good Troughton was as The Doctor. I had no idea.
The other Troughton Cyberman story on DVD, The Invasion, is also really good. Again, they don't blow their wad with the Cybermen right away...they story's more about a power-crazed dude wanting to take over the world. Good stuff, but Tomb is where it's really at.
The other two Troughton Cyberman stories, The Moonbase and The Wheel In Space, are incomplete. I hope they actually find the missing episodes soon instead of replacing them with rather stiff CG like in The Invasion. It's possible- after all, Tomb of the Cybermen was thought to be completely lost until the complete missing film reels turned up in fucking Hong Kong, of all places...
I saw most of an episode recently. It was much better than I expected! Finale of season 9 or something? I'm not sure, didn't really care when they were trying to tell me what was going on beforehand.
So THAT'S who had Martha's mom hostage!
If you get BBCAmerica the Christmas Special airs tonight at 9.
I've watched the first two seasons, with Eccleston and Tennant. I really liked Eccleston's no- bullshit attitude, but Tennant has grown on me. He seemed goofy in comparison, but it's just enough playfulness to be fun and not get on my nerves. I gotta admit I'll miss Rose, I hope the next companion will grow on me like the doctor did.
I was in the same boat. Really dug Eccleston being a borderline dick, thought Tennant was too goofy, but turns out he's my favorite of the three. Smith is no slouch though.
Tennant gets kind of pissed before it's all over.
"I'm the Doctor, and you're in the biggest library in the Universe. Look me up."
Yeah, in the beginning he's so different from Eccleston, but he endures some heartbreaking stuff and comes out super salty by the end.
He's got a major dark side. The first time you really see it is in The Family two parter. That was the episodes that made me decide that tenant was the best.
I'm STOKED for the next season. Can't wait for it to start.
Finished season 3, watching the Christmas episode going into season 4. Why couldn't Kylie Minogue be the new companion and not that bride bitch from the last Christmas episode!
Started watching Torchwood: Children of Earth. Unlike regular Torchwood, it is actually pretty good!
The bride grew on me, but she's still my least favorite companion.
Hogwash!
Donna was the best by far. I didn't like her at first either but she grew into the best of all his new companions.
I still haven't gotten around to finishing season 5 (I stopped after the first episode with the underground reptile people). Other than the fact that she's gorgeous Amy is a fucking horrible companion.
The reptile episodes were rough, but it gets a bit better after them. Sooo many problems with those episodes though.
I like Rose Tyler. I think her over bite is cute <3 ^_^
http://www.the-nextlevel.com/tnl/att...1&d=1295313204
My Jacks and I have been watching the original series from the beginning. We've made it to the 4th Doctor, 1977. Can't wait to get to the new series.
I really like Sarah Jane Smith as a companion. She was spunky, aggressive and cute as a button.
The next season premiers this Saturday!
In sadder news Elisabeth Sladen, who played Sarah Jane Smith, passed away yesterday. I guess she had cancer, which I would never have known from her appearances on the show - she looked as healthy and vibrant as one could possibly hope to look at 63.
Stoked for Saturday! Sucks about the Sarah Jane chick, but I never saw any of her shows other than when she was on the main show.
I too have seen the light and am all about Amy now.
You can see Rose whore it up if you so choose in her other show.
I don't even like redheads but I still think Amy Pond is insanely hot.
My wife watches this show.
I surf the internet and stare at the redhead.
I like some of the episodes, but generally it's pretty dumb. I can't ever get through a whole season or anything.
Great concept, poor execution, and a slave to the history of the original.
I think more than anything it is the format of television that drives me away from television shows. It guides the writing and it all gets very boring.
Love the Scottish accent, too.
I've been watching alot of PBS lately (damn my CuriousGeorgeCatinHatSesameStreet loving kid) and forgot how much I liked this series or that there was even a circa 2000 reboot.
Isn't he supposed to have only 13 chances for transformation though?
There was some article written late last year which basically retconned that out.
Besides, even if they did stick with it, they could weasel out of it like they explained for The Master in 8's movie.
At some point when they compressed all the seasons together in Netflix they also added the Christmas specials, so I finally got to see the spaceship Titanic episode... Total shit. Like 7 people in a row martyr themselves selflessly, get fucked. That shit became comical almost immediately, there was no emotion there whatsoever. I know it was probably a throwback to the Poseidon Adventure (or even Titanic itself!), but jesus.
Kylie Minogue is always awesome, but I am SO glad Russell T. Davies is gone. Good for him bringing the show back; too bad he is shit at it.
If any of you are interested into getting into the older stuff, AVClub is running a series about all the Who from Docs 1 - 8:
http://www.avclub.com/tvclub/tvshow/...o-classic,186/
The articles help bring about good discussion. I can't wait for next week's review of Time and the Rani because of how awful it is. My wife found a place to grab it and we watched it... and that's probably some of if not the absolute worst episodes of television that I have ever seen.
I like the Cybermen.
Oh-mah-gah is how the Third Doctor pronouced it in the 3 Doctors special. We hit season 18, 1980, the Leisure Hive yesterday. Watching all the episode from the beginning has been quiet a project, but there are numerous good ones. Tomb of the Cybermen, with the 2nd Doctor being one of my favorites. Dog$, I'll check that out. :D
Tomb of the Cybermen was amazing, even with all the silly low-budget effects. I got a great big lol when the black guy threw the obvious dummy Cyber Controller into the console. Earthshock is another great Cyberman story, but you have a ways to go before you get to that one (5th Doctor).
A friend talked me into giving this show a try on Netflix instant. Started the first episode. Reported back to him: "zombie mannequins. Are you fucking kidding me?" He was all, I know, it's stupid, and the effects are kinda shitty through the whole show, but just go with it. So a few days later I go back and finish that one.
...
That was three days ago. I'm now almost finished with the Eccleston run. How did I never try this before why is it so good oh my god.
That's what happened to me, then one day I just sat down and watched a whole mess of them.
Tennant is still my favorite, Smith is getting there, and I still like Eccleston. I feel like Eccleston would be the only Dr to get in a fist fight though.
The thing I loved about Tennant was the dark side to his Doctor. You got one chance, and if you fucked that up you were done.
The Family episode was the best example of that.
Tennant beats the shit out of Eccleston, how is this an argument?
The new pretty Frankenstein's monster doctor isn't half bad, either.
I liked Tennant much more than Eccleston the first go around but every time I rewatch them my opinion of Eccleston gets a little bit better and Tennant gets a little bit worse. I think Smith will end up being my favorite of the three, though.
Tennant stayed on too long, by the end of his last season I was sick of him already. Smith's alright!
Getting a girl I'm going out with into Doctor Who. Started with Girl in the Fireplace (which, by the way, 100% success rate using that episode to get friends into the show). I don't feel like going back to season 1 so we're just continuing with season 2 from that episode and forward. Next two episodes were introduction to the Cybermen, then a crap one off episode, then the two parter with the Satan Pit, then Love and Monsters. It's a list of episodes that runs the gamut and we're having fun so far.
Only problem! This season ends with the Cybermen versus Daleks episode and she won't have seen the Daleks before now. Who fans, if you were to pick an an introduction to the Daleks which would you choose? Obvious choices are Genesis of the Daleks or Dalek. Unobvious choice - Dalekmania, a documentary. I've never seen a classic series serial with the Daleks other than Genesis - are there any that paint them in a truly terrifying light? The new series, I think, doesn't do a great job of showing them at close to the threat level that characters seem to think they are.
Just tell her who the Daleks are.
That's certainly an option. Kind of "where's the fun in that?" though.
Anyone watch the season finale tonight?
I did, was pretty great! Going to be a long wait.
You know if they cut out all the lines where they're just saying someone's name this show'd be 15 minutes shorter.
"Doctor"
"Pond"
"Amelia"
"Doctor"
"Dr."
"Amy"
"Rorry"
"Doctor"
