Well no shit you can update your own firmware, i'm sure there's something more to it than that, even if it's some arbitrary bullshit that keeps you from just hacking the firmware to get Netflix.

I don't have WDTVL, but I know certain sites had certain less than authentic firmware. I didn't bother with it on my non net enabled WDTVHD.
