I'm interested in playing this with a few of my friends and I know shit about it.
Does anyone here play, and if so any pointers? Anyone have any strong opinions towards the different armies? Right now I'm either thinking Tyranids, Necrons or Orks.

A friend of mine played this, he says it is a terrible money pit, terribly unbalanced and nearly unplayable. That and it isn't fun. Supposedly there is another one out there that is actually fun, but I don't know too much about this subject myself.
Edit: Don't go from WoW to this, use this free time to do something useful.

I agree with Destin. There are more valuable things to do with your time.
So are you talking about the MMO or the pen and paper stuff? If the latter, I have no idea.
But if you're looking to waste your time with an MMO that isn't WoW, go with EVE since it's pretty much the most interesting thing out there. Problem is, it's one hell of a time sink and you're pretty much required to get involved in the corporation wars to get anything out of it. Otherwise, COMPLETELY BORING AND HORRIBLE.

I was planning on finding a cheap army on craigslist (the friend I'm playing with got a three thousand point orc army for $50, that would last me forever. Also my dad has TONS of model paint and brushes, more than I could use in a lifetime). So my plan to sink money is minimal, and if I dont find it really fun I just wont ever get anything. I doubt this could ever become what WoW was, technically speaking I have no way to waste time on this any day but sunday when these people I know play in the morning.
Yeah, I've been playing EVE for about two months now. It's pretty neat. The sheer expanse of the game is fucking mind blowing. It's kind of boring at times and entirely too complex, but I'll be damned if it isn't interesting. I get to pilot Assault ships on sunday. Wooo!Quote:

I didn't like the game when i tried it. I have a friend who manages a games workshop and has spent over 5 grand on armies, which is ridiculous. He's currently into a variation called Mortheim or some shit in which you just play as a squad rather than a whole army.

Its entirely possible that the tidbits I've picked up second hand concerning his time with WoW are completely untrue. If so I'm basing all this on bullshit. BUT if they are true and he was pulled into that to the degree that more than a couple personal relationahips were jeopardized then I don't see how something just as addictive would boil down to a couple of hours a week. well, I guess to be fair, if he is paying on a house and a car, a 100k isn't much right now. Houses are a lot of money right now. Even in MS, a nice sized house can be 160 to 300k

Its retail. For four months out of the year, you make huge bank. Six more months you do ok. Then there's two months where you hope to make enough to cover the bills.
The reason people have a hard time living on even 100k is because they think "I NEED A BIG HOUSE" and then spend a grand or two a month on that house.
If I made 100k a year fuck, I'd just save $60,000 of it each month and retire early.

A lot of my friends are just moving somewhere else, if I get the chance I'll probably do the same thing.
ideally, if I get my way, I will pay for a house in Mississippi that is about 40 minutes to an hour from one of the cities (Tupelo, Jackson, Memphis, the coast, etc)
BUT, I'd like to rent and work somewhere else in the country. I'd like to own a house, but I don't give a shit about owning one in cali. Work where you want to work, and retire somewhere a little slower and safer.
er back to the 40k thing. The problem with 40k is it is a huge money sink with lots of drama attached to the company. Anytime a new model/book is released it is more powerful as a rule than anything else. While most things do this, it is very bad with gamesworkshop stuff. I'd suggest warmachine (steam powered giant robots, my personal crack), heavy gear (mechs/tanks in the future!), necromundo (GW, but still good, rules are free), Malifaux (magic meets board gaming), flames of war (ww2) or anything not Warhammer related.
Unless Warhammer is the only game in town. Look around and see if anyone else plays something. My town is lucky to have several great gaming stores with free to use space for gaming and organized leagues.
My primary problem with warhammer is the lists (the army builds) are outcome determinative without regard to the players. In Warmachine give a great player a mediocre list and a bad player the best list in the world and you'll have the great player win almost every time. Least that is how i see it.
I delivered some pizzas to guys playing warhammer at a comic shop the other day. They gave me a $20 tip.

I didn't end up playing Warhammer, no. The guy I was going to play with hasn't really played since a few weeks after this thread. I'd play a round with him anytime using his pieces, because it's fun to drink a beer and hang out, but I have no intentions to ever own my own pieces.
