Since I know a couple people on this board have Japanese versions of games like JSRF and Gunvalkyrie, could you please tell me what the language barrier is like? I am going to be buying a modded Xbox (probably today) and would like to get Japanese versions of the Japanese games, provided they are playable.
JSRF can't be any harder to play in japanese than the 1st one. If a moron like me had no problems with the jap JSR, you won't either. Gunvalkyrie isn't text intensive either... mainly shoot shit... Get both. And Bistro, Shikigami and Nezmix. Remember our earlier lesson... think WWED?
How is Nezmix? That one has interested me since it was announced.
It's very... umm... not burnt yet, so I can't actually tell you. I just listed jap games I want to play. Please don't hit me... :sweat:

If you can play Jpn DC JSR then you can play Jpn Xbox JSRF. Same language barrier.
I don't own Gunvalkyrie yet so I can't comment on that one.
The language barrier in JSRF isn't too bad, just figuring out the "riddle" challenges is a bit tough. These have been translated all over the web by now though. I have to say, getting from stage to stage in this one is a bit more confusing than the first. Cutscenes are in English as usual.
Shikigami is a shooter, so no problem- and the menus are in English anyway.
Regarding Nezmix (rat game), I'd be inclined to say it's just a shit first generation game. That's what I've heard at least, and it looks the part.
Bistro is the usual stupid fare, Nezmix is coming out soon in the US, and JSRF is just as good in the US.
This is the last system on EARTH that anybody would want to import. It would be like a Japanese person importing the PS2 from the US so he could get his games late too! Alright!
Xbox is an american system, get the American one.
I bought the Japanese Xbox because I hate western games. If the only games I buy are Japanese what's the point in an American system? I like to be able to play these Japanese games in their original state, as the creators intended rather than putting up with American localisations.
Bistro Cupid is actually very good, it combines management, RPG field sections and dating quite well.
Oh one western game I do like is HALO but then that got a Japanese release so...

Yes I love all things Japanese, I am an open-minded person who respects and takes interest in other countries and cultures rather than being xenophobic and sticking to my one country of birth. I will be studying Japanese and French at university as the linguistic as well as cultural aspects are things that fascinate me. Do you have a problem with this?
Other reasons why a Japanese Xbox is ideal for me is for the inevitable Japanese exclusive games that will come out, the cool translucent casing mine sports and the stronger RGB signal.

Sounds like you've got some ignorance to share yourself, Master. If a person likes Japanese games, why wouldn't they buy a Japanese system? And with stuff like Crazy Taxi 3, Panzer Dragoon Orta, Shikigami no shiro, Jet Set radio future out (or coming soon), I think there's quite a few reasons to own a Japanese Xbox. I apologise. Two things that rub me the wrong way though.
A) Companies pay a lot of money to bring their consoles to different countries. Localizing costs money. Personal preference fine, but when a product started in English, why go Japanese? Whatever, personal preference I guess...
B) Japanese stuff isn't cooler just cause its Japanese. I'm all for learning the language to take in the things I could be missing out on otherwise, but getting everything translated into that language even if as you stated "the origional intent/vision" was in English, I just don't get it. Again, its lost on me but whatever floats your boat.

My whole collection (except my MD games) are Japanese and I won't change that just for the Xbox. I don't like localised games, I like them in their original state before they are butchered with changed music, Americanisms, crap cover art etc and besides, Japanese games (with very few exceptions) come out in Japan first or are exclusive to that territory. sidez do you speak japanese ? i'd buy japanese versions of japanese made games if i spoke the language but i kind of like understanding the game while im playing it. almost all the import games i own i also own the domestic vesions and just bought the import copy for collectibility as the cover art is better 99% of the time.
speaking of i just got Landstalker complete at funcoland -- someone please tell me the Jap cover art didnt look this bad. cause the one i have is horrific.

You know, I'm wishing that I bought a Japanese Xbox too since most the the Xbox games that I'm really enjoying are either from Japan or have Japanese releases. Besides, I just saw a trailer of Bistro Cupid and I really want the game, but I know it will never get a US release. Not to mention Phantom Crash and getting a bunch of other good games months before US release... -_-
Guess I'll have to look into modding myself or buying a whole new system, though I wish I didn't have to do either. Damn MS for continuing the utterly stupid tradition of territory lockouts.
Well Burnout (Grand Heat) was a U.S. made game, and if you prefer the original state, then should'nt you buy the American version? Also Burnout is one freaking awesome game that no one should pass up on. One other thing, Sega said that their main focus is now on North America, so that would mean more in my book that the games are going to aimed more at the U.S., and I would disagree on Crazy Taxi being aimed at the Japanese. Mainly because it did not do so well there, and the whole game takes place in America, with american characters, and american music. And I have a feeling that your tune might change, considering that non-japanese games have never been better then right now, and they are only getting better. I hope for your sake you don't get left out.
LittleEric~ I can't speak Japanese for toffee but I can read it fairly well. I'm a bit rusty right now but that will soon change. 95% of my playing time is given over to arcade games so language is not an issue.
Ammadeau~ That list just represents the must buys for me, there are many more games that interest me. I really don't know much about Thousand Island, I've not seen the trailer yet but Famitsu Xbox had a nice 2 page spread on the game last month. That's the thing, if you're going to only buy Japanese games you may as well just buy a Japanese system and have done with it. It's pointless tempting fate then worrying whether or not a certain game will get a domestic release or if the localisation will be ok. Judging by your DC collection, you're no stranger to this and the Jpn Xbox will really suit your tastes as a direct successor to the Jpn DC. I think Orta is out in september in Japan so you have the summer to sell your USA Xbox and get a Jpn system :P
Clash_Master~ Grand Heat is English not American. I don't like having a mish mash of regions in my collection nor do I like chipping my machines so only owning a few games (of my 60 odd Dreamcast games, not one of them is of western origin) that are not of Japanese origin in NTSC-J format is fine. I agree though that non-Japanese games are getting better with Korean (Pump it Up, Strident, Shining Lore) and English (Colin McRae 3, Burnout, Prisoner of War) developers producing some really interesting games. America has HALO and errr...

Links for a bunch of Xbox trailers of games coming out in Japan (though I don't think all are Japanese). Need latest divx for them. The trailer for Thousand Islands is short, but very sweet to me. The idea of building your own island fortress has a lot of appeal for me.
I wasn't going to buy any new systems partly because of this territory nonsense. Then JSRF came out and I had to have it, and at the time I naively believed that any Xbox game I would want would be released in the US soon after the Japanese one. Now its:
1. Games that won't hit US at all (Bistro Cupid)
2. Games that the Japanese version is superior (DOA3)
3. Games that come to Japan long before US release (most of them)
Probably going to sell my current Xbox for whatever I can get for it and buy a pre-modded one since they're not that much more than a straight Japanese one.
Are there any online places that sell modded Xboxs besides NCS? Since they only sell the limited ed modded for some reason I've already spent enough money on this mess.

What about Morrowind? Come on, at least give the yankees 2 games there :) Personally, while that list of Japanese games looks very good a good number of American/Euro produced games are the reason I hang on tightly to Xbox. I've played LOTs of Japanese games, but Halo, Amped and Morrowind are the 3 I've played the most (oh.. well, JSRF is up there too).
Oh well. Diffent strokes I guess... I wonder what it is Blizzard is cooking up for Xbox.. unless that's a completely unsubstantiated rumor.

Heh, I was going to mention Morrowind even though I play it on a PC. Wish that a Japanese release of that were possible just to see what sort of reaction it would get. Translating 6 novels worth of text though is not a job I'd wish on anyone.
Amped is great, but I think every time I play takes another year off my life. The neighbors are complaining about the noise too. Not playing the music too loud, the fact that I'm screaming off the top of my head most of the time I play it. Frustrating is one thing, but geez...
While I like US titles in general, for the Xbox they're lacking in amount and in quality at the moment. Yes, I think Mechassault will rock, but after seeing the new trailer of Tekki, I know which I would choose if I could only have one.
A one-wire Xbox chip? Sounds almost too good to be true, but I'll hope its true nonetheless. :)
PS. Just played the PC demo of Shikigami. Must have the full game soon. :sweat:
That's true... the GREAT American support hasn't shown up just yet. But Blizzard, Bioware, Ion Storm, Id and a few others have games in the works which should be great. As a side not, I was thinking about my favorite games right now and all of them are American (one Canadian) and all of the development studios names begin with "B". Bungie, Bethesda, Bioware and Blizzard. Seriously, I don't play anything else but those right now. I'm buying a retail copy of Neverwinter Nights for online co-op tomorrow.
Not to derail the topic though - the Japanese support is better than anyone could hope for and the support from the west is coming where it counts moreorless, with some all-time great throwing in their efforts. A Japanese Xbox wouldn't be terrible IMO, I just feel that you would be limiting yourself... many great western games won't be heading to Japan/Japanese Xboxes. Morrowind is a fanatastic example. In this case, I think the Japanese would do best to import thiers from America. Just my opinion though. The amount of exclusively Japanese games on Xbox are and probably will remain slim.

OK I have watched the Thousand Island trailer (courtesy of JAPJAC) now and it looks alright if a bit too PC-like if you get me.
I honestly don't see anything American made that is coming out for Xbox that appeals to me beyond the new Need For Speed game which will probably come out on Jpn Xbox anyway as EA seem keen to release all their games in Japan (mixed blessing). Europe makes much better games than America IMO.
I will get by with Japanese support alone, it's much better than the Gamecube's 3rd party range. With 3 systems, I don't think I will miss not being able to play American games. Way too many Japanese games that I want and western games are never arcadey enough for me. If you have a decent PC and merely a casual interest in western games then an Xbox capable of playing American games is not necessary IMO.

Sidez: I would wager that the majority of Japanese developed titles will be released in the USA whereas it was amazing that Halo even made it over to Japan. A lot of great American games just aren't making it over there, so I think the Japanese Xbox is an even greater limitation. That's just what I think though :/
Truth to tell, I'm glad that there is something else to like about Xbox other than what I see in it... even if I don't understand it at all.
