We've got threads for all the Summer of Arcade games except the best Summer of Arcade game. That shit ain't right.
What is Monday Night Combat?
It's a third person shooter that plays like Smash TV, Team Fortress 2, and Defense of the Ancients thrown into a blender.
Why should that interest me?
You're kidding, right? Kill yourself.
What are the classes?
There are 6 classes who each have 4 upgradable abilities apiece, 3 active and 1 passive, obtained with the money you earn from kills, assists, and such over the course of a match:
Assault: The well-rounded soldier guy. Abilities are remote-detonated bomb, an extended hover, and a charge that knocks people back. Main weapon is an assault rifle, secondary is a grenade launcher.
Support: The medic that is surprisingly (some may say dismayingly) effective even solo. Abilities are hacking (gives a range/power boost to turrets), a deployable mini turret, and airstrike beacons. Main weapon is a heal/sap ray, secondary is shotgun.
Tank: The damage-sponging pyro. Abilities are Adbomb (grenade that obfuscates its victim's screen with ads momentarily), emplacement (anchors yourself to the ground and increases damage), and a charge. Main weapon is a flame gun, secondary is a railgun.
Gunner: The heavy. Abilities are slam (ground pound that knocks away anyone close), emplacement, and a grapple. Main weapon is a gatling gun, secondary is a grenade launcher.
Assassin: The fragile ninja. Abilities are cloak (invisibility), dash, and smoke bomb (blinds nearby players and shorts out turrets for a bit). Main weapon is knife/sword, secondary is a shuriken shooter.
Sniper: The sniper. Abilities are sap bomb (area affect that slowly drains the health of anything near it), traps (tripmines that slow or freeze an enemy that passes over them), and grapple. Main is sniper rifle, secondary is an uzi.
All right, how does the game work?
There's 2 modes: Blitz is a Horde/Tower Defense sort of thing where 4 players try to protect their Moneyball from a robot onslaught. There are 5 difficulties, the first 4 having a finite number of waves and the last being a 'play until you die' sort of deal. It's decent but the extended appeal is pretty thin, as there's only 1 map for it.
The meat of the game is Crossfire. 2 opposing teams of 6 jockey to destroy each other's Moneyball. Robots spawn from both teams' camps, and it's your job to get them all the way to your opponent's Moneyball to take it down, at which point your team can actually damage it. There are 4 stages available for this mode.
In both modes, the stages are littered with preset turret emplacements that any class can spawn one of 4 types of turrets from, provided they have the right amount of money. Each turret type has 3 levels that get incrementally more expensive to upgrade to, just like your personal abilities. Using and maintaining these can be just as important as dealing with things yourself.
How is the netcode?
Fantastic! I have played an obscene amount and don't feel I was ever cheated out of a shot I made. It's kinda balls at migrating the game if the host quits, though.
Holy shit these Support guys are fucking broken!
Yeah, they seem a little overpowered for the role they're supposed to play. Still, nothing a little good planning can't overcome.
I'm on this a lot, send me an invite if you want to team up or need help with Blitz achievements.
