In one day he sold $350k worth of product, that was a big day, but still. There's articles up online about his success and his website has sales totals. He's sold over half a million copies of a game that costs $13, this is not rocket science.
Anyone who has every pirated anything has no place in making anyone feel bad for taking money from this guy. If you've ever pirated a movie, television show or any music you've taken money from people that make less money in a year than Notch will make today.
-
I think you failed rocket science.

You realize that although he coded 90% of the game by himself, he still doesn't get all the money the game makes? He just set up a business, rented office space, hired employees, upgraded servers, etc.
He's an indie game success story, which is rare. That is why he deserves your 13 bucks.
ALSO, I've never pirated a game
-
He set those things up because he had MILLIONS OF DOLLARS to do so with. Now he doesn't get all the money, true, but he chose owning his own business which could grow and make him more in the long run.
I mean look, it's ok to say pirating is wrong. But, if you are a pirate (and this obviously isn't directed at you Dave) and you pick the biggest monetary success story in the video game industry as the one thing you defend, well you're a douche.
Once I get some spare cash I plan on buying it anyway. I just think it's bullshit that pirates defend this to the death while they steal recordings from bands who make, like, no money and barely scrap by.
-
I thought piracy was more of an "I can't afford this, I will get it for free and check it out" proposition instead of "I AM OWED THIS BECAUSE IT MAKES MONEY".
Neither situation is ideal, but jeez. Freak right out.
-
I still think that's true.
Which is really the point, I'm pirating because I'm back in school and poor. It just seems nuts to me that people will decide that taking product from someone who doesn't make much is fine, but taking it from a millionaire is not just because he's self made.
-
I thought the whole reason pirates justify their theft to themselves is because they aren't hurting a huge multinational game publisher by pirating an overpriced 60 dollar game. And the people who made the game will get paid salaries regardless.
This is the complete opposite of that. Cheap. Independent. Made by one dude.
Sure, Notch is better paid than someone who works at a big game company - but he also did all the work himself. He wasn't just responsible for art, or code, or animation - he was responsible for all of it.
Music is another story altogether. The music industry is really fucked. But lets not forget that 99% of musicians make 99% of their money from touring and merchandise - not selling records.
-
I pirate what I couldn't afford otherwise.
I justify it by saying that either way they won't get my money, I might as well enjoy the product. Also in the gaming industry, since I bought so many games used, it's really Gamestop that is losing money by my recent pirating spree, and fuck those guys, I worked for them and they are terrible.
-
I steal only what I can't afford (and that's everything!)
