Yeah, I thought that about that line too. I mean, sulfur by itself is worthless... I guess
The best thing about me being admin?
I don't know how to do shit. LEGIT GAMES.
Sadly, I've gotten to the point with Minecraft that I get to with too many games: what the game is and what I want it to be are far too different.
Minecraft is like buying one of those "basics" packs for Legos, where you get a bucket of the standard bricks and then a few other pieces. Lots of fun at first, but far too soon you start wanting wheels and joint pieces and more of the long thing flat pieces and whatnot. When you start off, it's exciting to see how far you can go with the stuff you've got, but then that excitement runs out. One of the projects I was having a lot of fun with, for example, was building my underground subway system - until, that it, it really sank in that I couldn't do with it what I really wanted, there would be nobody else I could show it off to, and having it go to other parts of my world were, in the end, actually kind of pointless.
That's another part of the game that I've lost my love for a bit - the exploration. Far and away this was my favorite part of the game at first, helped by the fact that Minecraft's random generation system is capable of doing some very amazing things. Unfortunately, though, that's gotten boring too. I know they've tried to add in things to give it a bit of variety, like biomes and whatnot, but I really need and want more. I want reasons to explore. One of the most interesting things Notch has said he's considering, for me, are ruins. That would add something interesting to your world, because it would make it feel like you aren't alone, and it would be something unique to discover that isn't all over the place. Add things that are uncommon, and that you never know when or if you'll run across, like maybe the cave of a giant dragon, or a pre-built abandoned castle, or whatever.
Also, loot. Desperately need more "things" to find that aren't common. Cave exploration gets horrifically boring after a while in terms of looking for stuff, because there's only so much I can care about finding more diamonds and gold. This could even be so cheap as palette-swap stuff. Pink, red, yellow, greed "diamonds". Specifically-colored metals or even rock/whatever. Relics or something similar that could be unique items for decoration that you aren't able to craft.
Then other things, like boosting the danger and excitement of mobs, or on the other end of things, letting players set their single- or multi-player servers to be day only.
What I really want out of a game is like character creator + dress up + crating and building of Minecraft + random dungeons and loot of Roguelikes. For what it is, I think someday it'll be expansive and advanced enough to enjoy it for its goals, but god that's going to take forever.
My life is validated when I save the princess.
Also: Shidoshi needs to discover what that "Multiplayer" button does.
So I guess now we can never talk about elements of games which are or aren't pointless because the whole hobby is!
And I've played plenty of multiplayer Minecraft. It fixes the "nobody to show off to" aspect, but is then is worse in terms of the limits of what you can and can't do.
Maybe if you play with assholes.
We can always ask for more. I felt like I've certainly got enough entertainment from the game to justify the purchase. I've played forever on a pretty big MP server, and I agree with shidoshi, it's hard to get motivated restarting and diving into another mine just to find the same stuff. Really though, what can we expect?
Host or rent your own server, set the limits you want, and make it friends only. If you just don't want monsters you can change the difficulty, which is pretty much the only thing daytime forever would give you. You might also get really into some of the texture packs people have made.
Yeah, it can all be a bit of a hassle and those aren't necessarily features you're getting out of the box, but Minecraft has methods of covering a lot of the things you have issues with. There's also the whole aspect of it still being in beta (and previously alpha) which I think a lot of people tend to forget.
