Capcom x CyberConnect new game announced at TGS. Looks amaaaazing.
It does? My definition of "amaaaazing" isn't "lame God of War rip-off with horrible art style."
But maybe that's just me.
This looks so rad.
SO RAD
Seriously, it's even got the screeching electric guitars down perfect. Fucking amazing.
Looks like an absurdly retarded action anime in god of war video game form.
I love it.
I don't see how anybody could claim it's a GoW ripoff (or anything) from that video. There was very little actually shown.
I can see it with the stop the giant monster by mashing L and R parts.
Fuck the GoW genre.
God Hand gooooooo
Also wtf cyberconnect, did any of you play the dot hack games? They were ABYSMAL
Don't dignify that shit by naming a genre after it. Call it the Bayonetta genre or the DMC3 genre.
Don't lump Bayonetta in with that trite shit.
This does look pretty fucking awesome. As long as it doesn't play like slow-ass GOW I have good hopes.
PREDICTABOW
Full TNL team playing BTB Headhunter for hours last night > your face
Interesting that's it's using UE3. Unfortunately that's the only interesting thing about it.
I will say that this looks pretty stupid, but not nearly as shitty as God of War. Hopefully it's at least fun.
THIS looks stupid while DMC looks great....yeah i no longer have any reason to listen to anything salsashark has to say.
The new trailer, wherein a guy shoryukens a planet or something:
Oh Japan, I've missed you.
I liked the first trailer better, but I'm still interested. Even Japan is better than David Jaffe.
I'm sick of video game trailers that don't show me how the game is going to play or only show about 10 seconds of actual game play.
So the Demo's up. It's the two scenarios we've already seen except now you get to "play" them.
And by "play" I mean watch a QTE, mash attack for a minute and then do some more QTEs.
This game wants so badly to be as fuckawesome as Bayonetta and so far is failing miserably.
It's Cyberconnect so I was reigning in my expectations but was still hopeful about it. I kind of hate to be that guy, but: maybe the demo isn't a good representation of the final product.
It will be.
I'm just glad to see Capcom still can't make anything good. I hope that streak continues until they die.
What has become of Capcom, this shit is just getting so sad.
Shit. I thought this was a game about Aurora. :(
This demo is awful. It's the approximation with everything that was wrong with game design a while back. Meaning - Hollywood envy coupled with yanking the player into the backseat as much as possible so they can show how awesome *they* are, rather than letting the player be awesome.
Although it really underscores how great a game is when it lets the player participation be the spotlight. There's a reason stuff like Skyrim and Arkham City do so well, and it has far less to do with how gritty or badass they trump stuff up to be and more with player involvement and choice. Whether a player realizes it or is just subconsciously hooked, they at least feel like something good is going on. Whereas in this...thing...I'm sure a player will just feel bored (unless they've pining less for a videogame and more for a new DBZ-like CG movie).
That's discouraging. I was hoping this would turn out to be a decent beat em up where you get to interact with the cutscenes instead of just watching them.
The most beat-em upping I saw was Asura has a close range attack to swat nearby enemies with. Outside of that, it's poor-mans Panzer Dragoon.
1. Watch long cutscene. Push buttons at prompts.
2. Actual gameplay where aiming and movement are controlled by the same stick. Lock onto stuff, push button. Hold other button for rapid fire.
3. None of that feels like it matters because there's no real pattern, and after about 20 seconds of it - ANOTHER CUTSCENE.
4. Repeat.
that is very disappointing. i was really looking forward to another insane beat em up. oh well. back to monster hunter than.
This game managed to bring waggle controls to an XBOX controller. I'm fairly certain it's the worst game of all time.
That's the first "episode" or whatever. But you're spot on. it was like sin & punishment with the most unintuitive controls ever but none of it mattered anyways.
The second episode is a more straight forward one on one "attempt to dive behind bad guy, mash B for power combo until the next cutscene fight". Oh but he would also teleport away all the goddamn time and you have to do a simple "dodge the vertical beams then jump over big horizontal beam" thing.
My interest in this game is pretty much non-existent at this point.
I'll probably watch a playthrough while eating lunch some day, though.
That demo was shockingly bad. I had super low expectations, but it was somehow significantly worse than any turd I expected. I'm actually quite impressed about that fact.
I also played that demo right after playing the Amy demo. I was surprised to see 2/10 and the likes for Amy, which I didn't think was THAT bad (though it certainly had its share of issues). Since Asura's Wrath is Capcom, I'm betting it won't get as low as 2/10 on major zines, though.
I still want this to be good =[
It could still just be a really bad demo~
No, it's Capcom, it's awful. In 5 year they'll be iPhone social gaming only.
I think the crazy action that goes on throughout the game is pretty cool. Unfortunately, the game itself has always looked like crap.
The first trailer was epic. Everything after has looked worse and worse.
This demo is retarded. And I loved every second I spent playing it. I'll definitely be renting this one. It's like Dragon's Lair, only instead of pressing buttons to see awesome cel animation, you press buttons to see the stupidest shit ever conceived with UE3.
yeah...the demo was just awful. I don't even know how to describe how much apathy I felt, I nearly fell asleep.
It's a shame as I was looking forward to this release. Maybe I'll just stick with DMC HD Collection and a few 3DS games this quarter.

Not about Asura's Wrath specifically, but absolutely about why this is a crap game in general.
James
I know nothing about this game.
But my buddy Richmond wrote an article about it!
http://art-eater.com/2012/01/a-buddh...-asuras-wrath/
That article made me wish that phenomenal art design could overcome crap gameplay.
James
I mean, that's how RPGs work right?
I gave it another shot.
It's not like I don't understand what they're trying to do. The sections are called "Episodes" and when you're playing them they have these arbitrary scene cut-offs and mid-episode eyecatches. They want this to be like "HERE, PLAY AN ANIME SERIES EPISODE BY EPISODE." The only way it would be more obvious is if they had overlong intros, endings, and recap sections between each part of the game to drive the point home (God only knows maybe they do.)
My point is that you can make a neat looking CG version of Dragonball Z with Hindu flavorings and hyper kinetic action sequences, just don't call it a game and charge me sixty dollars to play "Kick the soccer ball, Ryo!" over and over again.
To me, one of the only things Japanese developers still get right these days is a good boss battle. A good Japanese boss romp is a game where everything facilitates getting to the boss, and the boss fight is the part where all the creativity is put in (Music, art, etc) and requires the most effort from the player. It's a fun paradigm because often, western developers like to focus on the overall package, the delivery of a core system that is laid out in what they attempt to call a set pace. Boss fights often don't enter in to the equation, and if they do, they lack effort or creativity. The games can still be excellent, but in a rush to make their games more like hollywood movies, they lack that "Oh shit, that fight was fucking RETARDED" payoff that I'd get from a good Dante Must Die boss run. This game wants to be a new Devil May Cry, with crazy boss battles and set pieces that dwarf Bayonetta (which really looks like penis envy to be honest, and she doesn't even have a penis.) They just forgot the part where it also has to be a game with a satisfying core.
I liked how the (completely awkward, momentum breaking) load screens were anime commercial-break splash screens.
Just kidding, that shit was fucking stupid.
The demo was a pile of shit.
Looking for another reason to hate this game?
QTE cutscenes!!! Bullshit jiggle physics!!!
Day one.
It's a shame you'd have to buy this game in order to enjoy this DLC.

I wish that was actually for SFIV. Still pretty cool.
IGN review is up. Sounds interesting but it's mostly cutscenes and QTEs and only lasts about 6 hours.
I'd be curious enough to try it for around $15.
So I clicked on Eurogamer's review of this expecting and maybe hoping to see a 5/10 to justify my complete lack of interest in it. Not even close!
IGN had pretty much the same review. I'll probably bite at the first sale.
Sounds like some $$s were involved.
Because video games are like any other medium and having varied experiences to choose from is not a negative. Sometimes I feel like Bayonetta, sometimes I feel like Uncharted, and sometimes I feel like Metal Gear Acid.
Should every game be Ashura's Wrath? No. Is Asura's Wrath entertaining and worth the price of admission? Sounds like maybe it is.
Eurogamer are far more respectable than IGN
While this is true, I just found it funny that Yoshi dismissed this outright but then when Eurogamer says it's Legit, he now thinks its Legit.
While gaming is about versatility and all that, gaming journos would have you think there's only one flavor - the one they say is right - that is the True Business. Which so happens to be the wannabe movies like Uncharted more often than not. Which is why the tech-obsessed, all flare no substance poofs like Eurogamer (and Yoshi) shit themselves at anything that crosses that threshold.
Which is fine - it's his money and he can waste it however he wants. I just find the whole contradiction amusing, and good review or no, know what I played on that demo and it was shit. I'd get it for $10 or so like Dark Void. Is that really what Capcom wanted? A new IP on par with Dark Void?
Now that I've gone into this knowing that it's literally an interactive anime it's not so bad.
Wait whatQuote:
... all flare no substance poofs like Eurogamer
Would you say it's $60 good though?
People have paid far more for much less Anime. Who cares.
I think Yoshi was more stating that Eurogamer wasn't providing the justification he wanted as opposed to him thinking the game was now any good.
I think everyone else's hate helped bring my expectations in line so I wasn't disappointed with the demo when I played it a week ago. That said:Quote:

James
Suda51 has the batshit insane angle covered already, and his games are actually good.
Beat this last night. Liked it so much more than I ever thought I would have based on the demo. The setting is definitely reminiscent of God of War but in Asia, but the story and action is actually very similar to Berserk, which I absolutely adore. Just a story about one guy that gets fucked over, gets pissed and keeps blowing up giant "gods" and monsters through sheer awesome anger.
As far as games go it's not very long, but as a 6-7 hour anime it felt like a really complete, epic experience. A perfect weekend rental as long as you know you're getting more of an action-packed interactive anime and less of an actual game.
Found this for $40 so I snagged it and have been making my through it. It's pretty neat for what it is, which is to say that it's basically the next step from Dragon's Lair that never happened mixed in with some open-area combat sections.
The first DLC also hit yesterday and is an episode that was right where I was, and since it's only $2 I got it. I was wondering how a single section could be so big (it's over 1GB) and then when I loaded it up I saw how: it doesn't use any in-game assets except for the HUD and is actually completely traditional animation. From a couple sections that weren't quite perfect I could see they were doing it by having the characters and backgrounds as different layers (presumably for altering the length or success of actions based on inputs).
This should surprise no one considering my supposedly horrible taste in games, but I really had a lot of fun with Asuras Wrath. I would never recommend it as a $60 purchase, especially since there is at least 10 bucks worth of DLC you need to buy to see the whole story, but if you see it at a local redbox you should at least try it for a day. You might be pleasantly surprised.
Horrible taste or no, that seems to be the general consensus. I'm looking forward to the game when it hits $10-20.
I'm just happy a friend of mine bought the game so I can just borrow it from him and pay nothing for it... I know this sound crappy, but there just isn't enough there for me to want to spend money on it. I know that is selfish but I think borrowing from a friend and playing is more honorable than pirating it.
Ive been wanting this game but not wanting to pay $60 for it.
Target has it for $30 this week.
$15
This game rules. Fuck y'all. Definitely worth $30 if you go in expecting an interactive season of a ridiculous action anime.
It is my understanding that it is japanified dragons lair on crack.
I would (will) pay $30 for that.
That sounds fair I guess. Crappy gameplay with a shit ton of QTEs. There's a few cool fights but goddamn did they really need to recap what you just seen and did every five fucking minutes? I liked it at first but by the time it was over I sort of hated it.
It's worth $30. If you've ever liked an anime, it's absolutely worth $30. The recaps are part of the charm as one episode segues into the next.
James
Installing now, very excited to try this game.
This is one of those shitty games that TNL thinks is good but it's really not. Bad TNL BAD!
This game is great, but it's another $7 if you want the ending.
